When I look at all that has happened in the past 5 weeks, it's been a lot. I'm "behind" myself still working on water security and some food and energy projects in my neighborhood. I took a trip this past week to South Africa and had good conversations about social innovation, the economy, health care, and all the global problems facing the world today.<br/><br/>I've also been reading development economists who argue over whether it's best to do targeted interventions that solve one problem (i.e. randomized trials in development work) or a holistic approach (Millennium Villages, for instance). Some economists have felt that if you just raise a country's GDP and help them economically that all other areas--public health, food security, water security, etc.--improve. But that has not proven to be true in some cases at least in the short term.<br/><br/>I'm very interested, therefore in ideas and evokations that address all 5 or 4 out of the 5 of the past missions: energy security, water security, food security, money, and social innovation. There are natural interrelations between ideas that help water security and those that help food security since agriculture is the main use of our accessible freshwater supplies in the world. But I'm looking for ideas that are even more holistic. Are there any evoked ideas or plans out there that address all or most of the past mission themes? Are there even any ideas or plans that address all or most of the past and FUTURE missions as well (poverty, violence, health, etc.)? Are there any such ideas that would like to collaborate and work together in presenting an evokation?<br/><br/>Send them NOW, and let's move in an opportunity to evoke, affect, and impact for good.<br/>That's a CHALLENGE!<br/> Support Local Economies and Craftspeopletag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-03-31:4871302:Topic:749092010-03-31T18:35:46.839ZMargaret Solomonhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/MargaretSolomon

So normally when I think of shopping or spending money I think of things like clothes, entertainment and such. However I have learned in the last year or two the huge variety of goods that are made locally.<br/><br/>First I noticed deviant art, patch together and etsy. People all over are coming together to sell handmade products. Not everyone manages to get their goods out in the open. <br/><br/>I would like to challenge people to find local artisan crafts to support, learn about and/or participate in! I thought I'd list some examples...<br/><br/>Track down pottery co-ops. Four or five or more people come together to make wonderful pottery and share costs. These range from city based workshops to rare wood-burning kiln in the hills of Vermont. These potters get together to share their work and it is a wonderful place to learn about their lives and styles. To see a pit fired pot (which are AMAZING, by the way) next to a pot painted in the fashion of ancient Greece next to a pot with glazes based on new age chemical reactions is really inspiring. But before you find these places it is as if they don't exist. Every pot you buy is another pot they can make. Some are functional and some are just breathtaking. Also every person that shows interest is inspiring to the artist.<br/><br/>Find art galleries or craft shows, or glass works! There are some amazing glass studios in some very random places. Vases, plates, jewelry- buying right from the creators ensures that you are supporting local people rather than a mass produceing factory.<br/><br/>Find farmers markets or pick-yourself fields, or butterfly farmers that selll the wings for jewlery! Or locally made maple syrup. Organic icecream, hand made clothes, shoe repair places, family run gyms/rockclimbing/iceskating, find family run ridding stables or comuunity run dog shows... theres a ton of choices.<br/><br/>Another very important local economy can be shepards and knitting stores. In vermont and Masechusits there are lots of small farms for sheep. In vermont there are great little spinneries. The great thing about them is that a lot of them use organic wool, organic proceses and petrolium free products. Usually wooll is flown to some other place, say Peru, then flown to the stores. Buying locally made yarns decreases the dependance on foreign oil and chemicals. If you don't live near a yarn store you can try to just buy things domesticly made. <br/><br/>I imagine that not a lot of you knit, but there are tons of ways to incorporate yarn into fiber arts and sculpture. Although i supose a lot of us here might not be interested in art. But I can challenge you to give it a try! Find a craft or a hobby that uses local or domestic products. <br/><br/>Local made products are all over the place so go and dig some up!<br/> Challenge: Build TRUST for strong reputation networkstag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-03-31:4871302:Topic:748642010-03-31T17:59:14.463ZEvohttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Evo
Over the next 6 weeks we have a rare opportunity to work closely with people around the world who we may never meet. Then again, we may find that our evokations take us to other corners of the globe to places where we will need to rely on each other for survival. This network we are weaving here will mean life or death for many in our extended circles and it is important enough that we take this role we share seriously as we grow into this work together.<div><br></br></div>

Over the next 6 weeks we have a rare opportunity to work closely with people around the world who we may never meet. Then again, we may find that our evokations take us to other corners of the globe to places where we will need to rely on each other for survival. This network we are weaving here will mean life or death for many in our extended circles and it is important enough that we take this role we share seriously as we grow into this work together.<div><br/></div>
<div>To work together we must first know that we can trust one another. Trust is a very difficult thing to pin down and know when working virtually through words, videos and photos. While video and skype and other remote conferencing tools provide some sense of what the other is like it is still rare for us to truly connect and form a kinship of respect with others in digital space. We may make friends here but few of those friendships will really stick around long term. The bonds that will last will be forged over our evokations and long term endeavors where we choose to partner together to build more than we can do alone.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>How do we build partnerships based on trust and respect? First we LISTEN. We hear where others are, what's going on for them and what their struggles are in the current situation. We offer what resources we can but do not force our will on others -- we work gently and with compassion for the great journey that others have taken to be at this place with us.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>My question to you is: how do you build trust in these networks? How can you express to others that you are a trustworthy person who will get the job done and be dependable in times of extreme stress and crisis?</div> Challenge the Network: Find the Aquaduct Bike.tag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-03-30:4871302:Topic:729102010-03-30T14:13:41.527ZGilda Lorena Ariashttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/GildaLorenaArias

<div><b><i><b><i>UPDATE: As of 30 Mar 2010 0200 GMT, Round 1 has ended and <a href="http://blog.urgentevoke.net/2010/03/30/found-hidden-treasure-in-the-network/">the results are posted</a>!</i></b></i></b></div>
<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal;">This discussion thread will remain open for now, but the round is complete. Thanks to everyone who participated, and watch for Round 2.</span></div>
<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal;"><br/></span></div>
Fourteen thousand global agents. <b><i>Ten thousand</i></b> blog posts. <b><i>Twenty four hundred</i></b> photos and almost <b><i>a thousand</i></b> videos. And counting.<div><br/><div>Agents, we have a problem. As Alchemy has written: </div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>"<i>EVOKE was conceived as a crash-course in changing the world. It is a chance to showcase the kind of resourceful innovation and creative problem-solving that is happening today in sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions, and to collectively imagine how the lessons from those scenarios can transfer, scale, and ultimately benefit the entire planet.</i>"</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>The resourcefulness, creativity and collective wisdom of the network is here. I know it and so do you. But it is hard to find, and many of our agents know it is hard to be found. Our emergent strengths are hidden within, and we must discover them. This is a hard problem, so let's EVOKE it!</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><b>I challenge and welcome you to Round 1 of the EVOKE Treasure Hunt!</b></div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><b>Round 1 Objective:</b> Discover and document <u>high quality</u> <u>original</u> evidence posted by Agents with <u>fewer than 100 power votes</u>, who are playing from the continents of <u>Africa and South America</u>.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><b>How To Play:</b> Find evidence that meets the objective for this round. Document your discovery in a reply on this discussion thread. Provide the Agent's EVOKE name and the URL of the evidence you are highlighting, along with any explanatory comments you think are necessary.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><b>How Do I Win?</b> The win condition for this challenge is that the entire EVOKE network gets smarter and stronger. You help to achieve this simply by discovering and sharing outstanding original evidence from other players. You personally will receive <i>social capital</i> in proportion to your contributions, and you may also occasionally receive <i>power votes</i> from various Agents.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><b>Just A Few Rules:</b></div>
<div>1. In this round we are looking only for <i><b>original</b></i> evidence created by Agents. Original blog posts, photos and videos are great. We do not want to see evidence that is copied, quoted, or embedded from some other source. </div>
<div>2. No spamming. We are seeking <b><i>high quality</i></b> evidence. Agents who spam the treasure hunt will receive <i>negative</i> social capital.</div>
<div>3. You can discover yourself. If you and your evidence meet the criteria for this round, you are welcome to share it.</div>
<div><br/></div>

<p style="text-align: left;"><br/></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">We have a global problem with <span style="font-style: italic;">carbon dioxide</span> - 4.1 billion metric tonnes a year more are being released into the atmosphere than current systems can absorb. We need to cut down, and there are lots of schemes underway for that including <a href="http://www.1010uk.org/">10:10</a> - cut your carbon 10% in 2010! - but we also need to fix the mess.<br/></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><br/></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Your challenge - <span style="font-weight: bold;">design a solution that will absorb 4.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide a year without further endangering global food supplies</span>. Ideally the carbon will be fixed into the geological cycle - as rock or on the sea floor.<br/></p>
