Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

=====Breaking News======

There are now 8 teacher projects, and we're starting to make tracks. Come sign up for one -- see the wiki for details!

=====================

There have been many posts in other threads about getting a group of teachers together here on EVOKE. I'd like to pull us together. Here's my suggestion:

1. In this thread, post who you are and what you teach -- or, if you're a teacher-type but not actually a teacher, like me, tell us what you do. Tell us also where you're from!

2. Check out the google doc that happyseaurcin started -- it has ideas about how to engage teachers in EVOKE.

3. Take a look at the wiki (http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/) and visit the Calling All Teachers page. Add your name (and a link back to your EVOKE profile, if you like) if you'd like to collaborate. If you have an idea for a project, add it to the brainstorming section.

Let's see if we can get traction over the next couple of weeks and maybe pick an idea or two to develop more fully!

** Posted in grateful acknowledgment of everyone who added comments to the collaboration page, with hopes that this thread makes it easier for us to find each other. **

We had so much fun learning from Jake a few weeks ago that we invited him back this week to talk more specifically about Alternate Reality Games and Evoke!  Please listen to Teachers Teaching Teachers #190 - Listening to Student Gamers (and .... And join Jake, and a few other students -- some from Paul's school, some from Susan's school -- to talk about their experience of playing Evoke! Is it a game? Or is it just a trick to get people to use a social network? Why do serious gamers seem to know what Jane McGonigal is up to (See recent TED talk.), and get engaged with this game, while others are less engaged?

We invite you to join us as we listen to more of our students and our colleagues.

Are you playing Evoke? Are you wondering why we still are? Come find out!

Join us at http://EdTechTalk.com/live at 9:00pm Eastern / 6:00pm Pacific USA Wednesdays / 01:00 UTC Thursdays World Times

If you have Skype and an headset, we'll be happy to include you into our conference call. Just let us know your Skype name in the chat room at http://edtechtalk.com/live.

Paul, I'm so glad you're doing another one on EVOKE. The conversations are so interesting and so much fun! I'll be there if I can, and I encourage others who are interested in education to tune in too.
Hi Ninmah
Will add links and suggestions on wiki both to your project and the one I have suggested. For discussion, here of each specific project, where? Here?
Aisling
Hi Aisling,
Project discussions should go on the wiki -- I'm not sure why your edits were removed, it certainly wasn't me! I'll check into it and see what I can find out. Meanwhile, you were doing the right thing by adding your name there.
Hi there!

I've just joined Evoke recently and I'm trying to catch onto the community. I'm a grad student going for my master's in Biodiversity and Conservation Biology and I work as a lab instructor for a general biology class. I'm considering environmental education/interpretation as a long term career once I graduate next spring, and maybe have secured a summer internship doing marine mammal interpretation at a national park this morning (fingers crossed). Lately I've been exploring science education through video games, because..well, I love science, and I love video games.

Evoke pretty much has nothing to do with my class (in terms of the general knowledge my students are required to gain), and even if things were sort of relevant, I don't have that much flexibility in what I teach (I teach three labs, 24 students each, who collectively belong to a larger class of about 300 people - so all of them have to get the same material). But I'm definitely going to check out some of these projects going on!

Lauren
Hey Rachel,
Great talking with you tonight. Good luck with this initiative!
Hi teachers,

I just ran across an interesting game by IBM called Power Up. I wrote a brief post about it here. It's a first-person style game (no shooting that I saw) designed to teach kids about energy, and it can be played alone or collaboratively online, looks like. You can download it for free for PC or Mac. I didn't look at it in depth, but it looks interesting at first glance. I'd say it'd work for middle or high school grades. Enjoy!
count me in.
I'm a literature teacher in Israel.
learned about this project a few days ago.
I'm going to chage one of my cla**** to work around this site.
Hi Lauren and Gilad, and hi again Suzie! Thanks for posting here. Lauren, even if you can't use EVOKE in your current cla****, if you think you might be interested in working on the curriculum we'd love to have your help.

Gilad, that's so exciting! I'm glad to have you helping with the curriculum -- thanks for signing up on the wiki! I hope you will also share your experiences using EVOKE in your class. If I can help you, let me know.

Suzie, it was great to talk with you too! Thanks, and if you feel the urge to get involved with any of the projects, please do!
I just got certified in K-8th grade, so I am currently job hunting. I would like my cla**** to be involved in community initiatives once I start teaching.
The EVOKE Curriculum Needs You!

Hi educators,
The curriculum we are creating as a guide for teachers who want to use EVOKE-style challenges in their cla**** is coming along, and this would be a great time to jump in and help. Here's what you can do to further the effort and win fame and (not really any) fortune:

1. Go see what's there so far. The skeleton is sketched out, and it's starting to be filled out with details.
2. If you have five minutes, add something to one of the Brainstorming Needed lists.
3. If you have twenty minutes, add a resource link and annotation to the resource lists.
4. If you have an hour, spend some time reading it over and adding whatever you think is missing. It still has a ways to go!

When it's done, the curriculum will be packaged up in a nice PDF (I have signed on to do this) and made available for teachers. It'll be linked from the EVOKE site, I'll post it on my blog, I'll tweet it, I'll make as much fanfare as I can (and hopefully others will, too).

If you do any work on the curriculum at all, please add your name as an author!

The other educational projects are still out there too, many waiting for someone with interest to take them on. It could be you that makes them sparkle!

Thanks for taking a look!
I'm currently teaching in Manila and am part of a network attempting to do just this. Every year, students from around the region come together to share what they are doing to address one of the global issues ( GIN stands for global issues network - a suggestion posed by rischard in his book high noon 20 global problems and twenty years to solve them) during these conventions, students get together on groups to come up with solutions to issues they are not tackling yet. all of the Evoke powers are needed during these events. what i am currentlynworking on, however, is creating an effective digital platform so this collaboration can be sustained. I am finding EVoke a true inspiration in fuelling this project. I too have Bern spurred on by kiran sethi's riverside school and have high hopes for these types of forums. We need to put our heads together and make it happen. Count me in on these discussions please. I have around 5 students following evoke at present and 1 self proclaimed addict! Were I working in a different type of institution I would have changed my curriculum to EVoke by now. Alas I am an English lit. Teacher in a high powered international school and my hands are tied... Eager to get hold of that google doc

I love it! I'm giving you +100 Spark PowerPoints for driving this teachers group forwards Ninmah. I'm really excited about the potential of this. I'd love to see school kids all over the world collaborating on problems together. How can this group facilitate this? Keep up the great work.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Foods are vacc** sealded for easy…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
