CHALLENGE: Pick today's blessing as tomorrow's bane
One of the things I find amusing is how long people (government, businesses... everyone)
allowed cigarettes to be the cool thing. The advertisements, the movies and shows, hell even the 'aftersex' cigarette hand gesture (two fingers together against the lip then away with a smile) is still being laughed at.
Which is why I am asking: what do we consider a blessing or benign today that will cause a major upheaval tomorrow? What will need medical notes, social change, laws passed, to even requiring late night infocasts on how to beat it?
Sure, we have all this testing these days and an internet around the world for communicating thoughts and ideas instantly. But will this really stop the upcoming challenger to cigarettes?
Will it be soda pop? Sure it's addictive. Maybe coffee? Been around hundreds of years, maybe coffee contains certain chemical will prove to be destroying one of our chromosomes that controls immortality. Could even be all-natural, just that nobody knew the effects.
Yea, as much as I like coffee too, I'm thinking it will be the new evil in 10 years. Other possibilities would be staring at a computer screen for long periods destroys some portion of individual freedom and thought.
Or that the future evil will be CHOCOLATE, which will be found to contain a natural chemical that destroys parts of the DNA after enough has been consumed. Everyone will claim ignorance and Big Chocolate will have to go before a federal hearing to explain why they didn't disclose this information.

Ah, to me it seems obvious, but its hard to describe. Put simply its this : Wealth
I dont mean all wealth is evil or that money is inherently bad - just that today's perspective of money and wealth aquisition will be viewed as our 'bane' by future generations. Really think about it - how many of the world's resources do we put into this quest of 'generating more wealth' - we've almost lost sight of its original goals. Its become a power unto itself in our time, but one we are slowly coming understand, and hopefully, master.
Adam Smith put it best, in his fundemantal underlying principle of economics, which we also seem to have forgetten, paraphrased: 'Human wants are INFINITE, but our resources are FINITE. Economics is the quest to SHARE out these FINITE resources.'
The first sentence is most important, we can't let our infinite desires lead us to squander the very finite resources of our planet, by focusing ever more on GNP/GDP and forgetting they aren't true indicators of social wellbeing, merely how much crap we make (eg- make lots of weapons GNP goes up, standard of living tends to go down due to all the wars). Its also important when we are trying to divide up these finite resources to remember the generations who havent been born yet.

I have to agree with you on that one, Richard.
The number of late night shows on how to get rich. Banks offering ways for joe averages to invest into stocks that might give out 2% profit at best after fees when a savings account offers 4% per annum insured .
Money at one time was considered a serious business for banks and social inconvenience to everyone else. Now I have to wonder if anyone out there doesn't think about money in one way or another at least five times a day. It's not that wealth is evil. "It doesn't cry, it doesn't have emotions" to quote Kevin O' Leary.
Like fire, it all depends on how you use it that results in warming your family or burning up the world.
It seems like 'helping third world nations to bring them into the world economy' has replaced just helping them for the sake of helping them.

The meal
It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal.
