One skill I recently did some research on was teaching game design. A blog by Ian Schreiber is a great resource on this topic:

His blog led me to Project Horseshoe, game designers solving the world's game problems...excellent: One in particular caught my attention for its applicability to my classroom-a discussion of ethics in games, broken down in an excellent fashion.

Finally, Dr. Bernie Dodge, known in education circles for his work inventing "webquests" also teaches game design to aspiring educational technology masters candidates at San Diego State University. His syllabus and the work of his students is a tremendous addition to the incunabula of games in the classroom.

In my own classroom of grades 6-8, I encourage game design. I want my students to think about creating vs. consuming, and developing projects that inspire creativity. For many of them, game design is the ticket. It combines a number of critical skills for the next 20 years: creativity, communication, collaboration. I always start with brainstorms by the students. I encourage them to think about what they know, what they want to know, and how a game can allow them to dig deeper into their knowledge base, while having a good time doing so. It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal.
