Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Agent John Tsangaris has challenged the Network:

"I challenge you to pick a skill, not a power skill, but a specific real skill, and write a blog on how someone can build that skill.

The skill can be anything: Project planning, Speaking French, cooking for 100
people, CPR, etc.

Find free educational resources on the net and list those resources so someone
who wants to learn that skill can become proficient!

Resourcefulness powers for this one!"

Submit your new skill in the form of a blog post, a photo, or a video.  Tag it "NEWSKILL."  When you've posted your
new skill, be sure to search for others, and award them with Resourcefulness.

My team and I may award up to +20 Resourcefulness for your new skills.  This challenge will end at 2359 GMT
on March 10.

NewSkill: How to use an RSS feed to manage EVOKE Information Overload: http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/how-to-use-an-rss-feed
One skill I recently did some research on was teaching game design. A blog by Ian Schreiber is a great resource on this topic:
http://teachingdesign.blogspot.com

His blog led me to Project Horseshoe, game designers solving the world's game problems...excellent: One in particular caught my attention for its applicability to my classroom-a discussion of ethics in games, broken down in an excellent fashion.

Finally, Dr. Bernie Dodge, known in education circles for his work inventing "webquests" also teaches game design to aspiring educational technology masters candidates at San Diego State University. His syllabus and the work of his students is a tremendous addition to the incunabula of games in the classroom.

In my own classroom of grades 6-8, I encourage game design. I want my students to think about creating vs. consuming, and developing projects that inspire creativity. For many of them, game design is the ticket. It combines a number of critical skills for the next 20 years: creativity, communication, collaboration. I always start with brainstorms by the students. I encourage them to think about what they know, what they want to know, and how a game can allow them to dig deeper into their knowledge base, while having a good time doing so. I will post some class links as soon as I edit out names (district policy to not use first/last names in public links)
I just added a video I made of a new skill I'm developing: Composting!

I'll be uploading another video for the biochar (never done that before) shortly. I was inspired to make some of that by numerous other agents referencing re:char.
