To me this evokes the idea that from your own enviroment one will see the world at a different speed. Like beauty the problems and solutions exist in the eye of the beholder. That which a person percieves will determine how you will react. However the proverb classify's social status; Who is who of society. Thus rthe world will not be the same for a poor man or an ilitrate person.

It has often been said that there are three cla**** of people: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who ask "What happened?" This is a simple way of unfolding the phrase. Change, being a constant of life happens everywhere but the onlookers are amazed about the fact that change is occuring and are thus caught unawares. Those who ask the question "What happened" are so far away that they become 'victims' of change. Those who make change happen are however ready, and it appears as though change occurs in their favour. Any way, why won't it be? since they are the ones behind the wheel.
Evoke network is composed of people who seek to bring change, social innovation, to our world. That is, we are those who make things happen. Now, the difference among the three groups of people is who they really are.

I think it speaks volumes for a person's activities. I know multiple people who seem to, "get more hours out of the day". They're always active, doing something, and usually not just for themselves. There's a lot of community involvement and volunteerism that falls into that.
Hopefully, the people of EVOKE are the same way, and are able to do more in a day than most people can. Being proactive is not only important to be a member of EVOKE, but also important to live a healthy and fulfilled life.

I was absolutely fascinated by this story. I must admit, after I read the first paragraph I was thinking that the fisherman was not using his full potential. But at the end of the day, happiness is more important than anything. Thank you for your story.

Like a lot of the comments, I also think is about perception. Is not the same being an indigenous farmer in south america that being a stockbroker in London. Time is not the same, some people worry about getting the information and some other about getting the information right now. Both, the farmer and the stockbroker, need information, but the farmer doesn't need information every second - his crops aren't going to change from one minute to the other - like the stockbroker needs it - the market can change in anysecond.
But I also will like to comment about a thought that I had while reading the code phrase: If the earth moves, where is it moving to? Maybe the phrase is about that if you know where we are heading you can do something to change direction, take action. But if you don't know where the earth is moving to, you don't have any sense or urgency for changing directions or to getting ther faster.

I think that this phrase refers to the fact that we are all at different points in our lives, be it chronological age, developmentally, spiritually, in our careers etc. We have all had different experiences and experience even this current moment differently. Well all deal with things through different lenses, and that being said we can all contribute different aspects towards the evoke network. It is the different speeds and experiences of us all that can come together and form a wh***, to help create something big.

Is everyone going to sit and watch the things around them to happen until it gets so bad? Or are people going to stand up and be active, raise awareness of consequences soon to come? The first and easiest step to a problem is prevention. If it has already happened, then first action taken should be recovery. To try and slow and eventually cease the problem. I for one will stand.

Sorry if I can repeat some already expressed thoughts.
My first emotion thinking at this nice proverb goes to the Nigerian natural landscape and to the close, sincere relationship between the man and the environment (I've never been in Nigerian so I have this rural and ecological picture in mind). The proverb could take origin from thinking that life can have a different lenght for different animals living on the same environment. Seen from a butterfly's perspective, earth moves at a different speed from that of, say, an elephant, because of the different lenghts of their lifetimes. Life and time flow with different paces also with respect to the man, who can be a short-time butterfly, a powerful lion or a very old, slow turtle, depending on how good his condition is or how he choose to spend his life.
Even if the propensity to act and anticipate the future (and therefore to speed-up the pace) is certainly a good thing, I really don't see the equation fast=good and slow=bad. "Depending on who you are" seems to indicate that someone could be luckier than someone else for his/her social/economical/health condition. I see instead a message of hope because, despite your social condition or your material means, you have the possibility to enjoy a full life at your own pace, making the most of your talents.
So, making the most of our talents (and helping others to make the most of theirs) could be the meaning for the EVOKE network.
