It's time to get real, firsthand experience with innovative economies.
Your ACT mission this week: Make at least one economic transaction using a non-traditional currency, platform or exchange system you've NEVER used before.
Some ideas:
If you're feeling really adventurous, join forces with some friends, classmates, family or neighbors to invent your own small exchange to test a new idea.

While I was in New York last week I visited a bar called EVR which accepts Bitcoins as payment. Bitcoin is a virtual currency that was created four years ago which allows its users to remain anonymous. Using peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority or banks, the Bitcoin network manages transactions and the issuing of bitcoins collectively. Since it's an open source currency and designed by the public, it's not owned or controlled by anyone and allows everyone to take part in it. By using Bitcoin to pay for my drinks, I saw the future of electronic currency as a way to connect purchases across country borders. I think it's an incredibly exciting alternative to paper currency and would be a great way to end the hassles of converting money.
I normally pay for everything using cash. This week I used my debit card for almost ever purchase and I realized that I spent money more freely when using my card. When using cash I can keep an eye on what is being spent. When using a card I am not as aware of what is being spent.
This week I used a mobile payment application through your phone where you an transfer money into peoples accounts without needing thier bank account informantion. It is a very safe and easy way to transfer money through the internet. The app is called Venmo.
I work at a locally-run smoothie store and my friend works at locally-run coffee shop and whenever either of us work a shift we get a free drink from our establishments. Before this assignment there were times when I would not get my shift drink because I was not in the mood for a smoothie. After this assignment I decided to ask my friend if she wanted to switch shift drinks, so I would give her my smoothie and she would give me her coffee. She agreed and we are going to continue using this bartering system in the future.
Trading things + growing and making your own items.
Instead of buying things you can trade what you don't need for what you do need.
Here at school as freshman cadets we would trade shining shoes for shining brass buckles or ironing out new uniforms.
My brother and I decided to trade coupons for washing dishes, making beds, laundry, ect. Instead of betting or repaying in money we use our coupons.
Instead of going out and buying things that i need, its easy for me to just ask my family members for some. It's easier and that way everyone gets what they need without having to spend more.
use the stock exchange/internet to keep track of the prices of commodities so you can barter when necessary (more people in the 3rd world have internet access than you think)

Me and my brother trade alot. Wheter its candy favors or anything like that. and we end up paying eachother back through this to.
I barter with my mom alot. WHen I want to watch TV she makes me do and hour of chores or yard work.
In my house cooking and favors are the currencys. If i want something i tell my sister i will make breakfast for her and she does it.
My family and I run on money favors. Many times if someone didn't have money to buy something, a member would pay the extra. As a result, he or she would have to pay them back. If you did not completed the payback in a certain amount of time.Although this just a family thing we take it seriously.
My family and I exchange favors, candy, items, ect. If i want something and my sister has it i'll ask for it and see what she wants me to do for it. It is quick and easy and you get what you need and nothing more.
In my household, like many others, our currency is favors. It is basically, as said in the Bible, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Me and my family are filled with favors. It is like a favor for a favor. One day my mother might say to clean my room and then she will drive me to a store. We exchange them almost daily which makes that a fair trade system.
My family practically runs on favors. A sort of "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" type of system. For instance if you want the dishes done, but don't want to do them you may propose a deal for brushing the dog. This is a fair system of trade that my family and I use almost daily.
Normally when me and my sister do each other favors it is doing the dishes. Say she has more homework that night then I might be nice and do the dishes for her and the same goes if i have more homework that night.
