The more people who share a piece of wisdom, the more likely it is to survive. You can help an indigeneous community share its wisdom about the local environment, by creating a special knowledge object that can endure over time.
Your mission this week: Create a real physical object that encodes a piece of traditional wisdom about the local plants, animals, landforms, water sources, weather, or any other important feature of an indigenous environment.
This physical object will encode the information for people who don't have access to digital media today -- or for future generations who may not be able to access the forms of digital media that we use now. (The same way today most people don't have the tools to access knowledge stored on VHS videotapes or record albums.)
The object should be constructed from durable materials, like wood, metal, stone or plastic, and handheld, so that it might be passed on from one person to another. By making a physical "knowledge object", you're ensuring that a piece of oral wisdom is preserved for future generations.
Whose secret will you
guard?
There are hundreds
of indigenous communities around the world, from the Namaqua in
South Africa and the Nuu-chah-nulth in the Pacific Northwest, to
the Tukano in Colombia and the Puyuma in Taiwan. Each has its own
traditional wisdom to pass on to future generations, or other
cultures.
Where can you search for a
secret?
Here are few ideas... you can also search the Internet for the name
of your community followed by the terms "traditional knowledge",
"environmental knowledge", or "indigenous knowledge."
Choose an indigenous secret and doc**ent it in a real, PHYSICAL OBJECT - made out of durable material like wood, metal, stone or plastic. Upload a photo or video of your object as evidence of your successful mission. In the caption, describe the object -- and explain why you chose this secret to help pass on to other cultures, and to future generations. Why is it an important piece of information? Who do you think would benefit from knowing it, and how?

Comment by Eric Connor Lieberman on December 14, 2012 at 12:06pm I would have a small garden that people have rotated crops on so the don't have to slash and burn.
Comment by Hal Olson on December 12, 2012 at 2:56pm I would have a small sphere, and inside the sphere would be information on how to best use the soil in your area. This would include what to plant, when to plant, and how to keep the precious soil fertile and usable.

Comment by Arthur Sigfried Miltner on December 1, 2012 at 12:40am I would create a small device consisting of a handle and three disks on the top that can be twisted in certain patterns to unlock a small chamber on the bottom that contains papers holding the secrets of this time. It contains techniques and skills such as "using of the hoodia cactus to stave off hunger"
