STATUS:

Who else is inventing creative, sustainable ways to power our everyday lives?

Meet Jessica, a real power player: she invented a soccer ball that generates electricity when you kick it. Play a quick game of soccer with your friends, and you can power your household light for an entire evening.

Jessica tested her idea in South Africa and Kenya. Now she has her own company called sOccket to help her spread her big idea all over the world. And she's not the only young social innovator changing where and how we can get power.

Meet Hugo, born and raised in South Africa. He makes technology that allows anyone, anywhere to make electricity from dirt in their own backyard. To share his solution, Hugo started a company called Lebone -- pronounced [La - bo - ney] -- it's the Northern Sotho word for light, lamp, or candle.

Your LEARN mission this week is to figure out: Who else is inventing creative, sustainable ways to power our everyday lives? Find someone working on a creative electricity project, or a sustainable energy project -- and tell the network about their big idea.

Find the power players:

Try searching "social entrepreneur" and "electricity", OR "social innovation" and "energy", OR "sustainable energy" and "creative solution". Whose great idea can YOU discover?

Your objective:

Find a POWER PLAYER: someone who is working on an amazing electricity or sustainable energy project. Share your discovery with the network in a blog post, photo or video.

This objective is worth +3 knowledge share.

During my time spent reporting for WUFT News last semester, I met the amazing team at Alachua County Growth Management Department who's working to lower costs for Alachua County residents to install solar panels. While many people would assume that the major cost involved with using solar panels is the actual installation, Alachua County Growth Management Department planner Holly Banner realized that many people are deterred from installing panels because of the costly and confusing permit application process. She said the "soft costs" such as permitting costs have remained high over the years while the actual panel costs have fallen steadily. To combat this issue, the Alachua County Growth Management Department obtained a $290,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to build a user-friendly permitting system on the county website. With an easily-to-navigate process in place, Banner anticipates a rise in solar panel instillations across the county.

I think that there are many places and people working to improved sustainable and renewal energy.
Solar panels and wind I believe are two great examples.

The Great Outdoor Gym Company has invented a gym that harvests the energy spent exercising and converts it into electricity. It has an option for users to calculate their BMI and see how much energy they have generated. This system in currently in the United Kingdom and is designed to give office workers a way to take their workout outside.

I chose Mike Bermmann of Revolution Energy which is a renewable energy developer. And they focus on a financial model called a ‘Power Purchase Agreement,’ to help deploy renewable energy in an affordable manner to all hosts and clients we see within the state and within the region.

The power player that I found is named Stephen Wood, who is an assistant professor at Florida Institute of Technology. Wood is working on creating Wing Waves, which can be placed under the sea and produce electricity from the water. It is estimated that one square mile of Wing Waves can produce enough electricity to power about 200,000 houses. In regards to possible negative impacts on sea life, it has been proven that the wings are environmentally friendly and will not negatively impact sea life.

Jessica's idea will deffently create a lot of energy, but so will Hugo's.

Comment by Clayton Broom on December 9, 2012 at 7:47pm

Hugo's idea is a very innovative idea. The issue would be teaching people how to operate the power source. There is no way that every person in Africa would have the intelligence or technical expertise to make this work. As for Jessica's idea... It's certainly possible, but the issue would be how easily everyone including criminals could access energy.

Comment by Rob Brannan on December 6, 2012 at 3:54am

Hugo's idea will change Africa. This will allow the various people in Africa with the ability to have energy. Also, this energy will provide the region with sustainable energy without having the adverse environmental impacts.

I think that Hugo has a REALLY good idea. Also, Jessica's idea could really change south Africa in a BIG way

Comment by Robert Breeser on November 30, 2012 at 12:00am

Jessica's idea could really change the face of power because in places like South Africa, soccer is a sport played by many. By introducing sOccket to the people there, more people could get power.

Comment by Ellie Addington on November 4, 2012 at 8:37pm

I love Jessica's idea! I think it is great that kids can have fun while being productive. I know that in some places it takes hard work to get electricity. Instead of mothers telling their children to go turn a heavy wheal or something like that, they can say go play soccer! That is great!

Comment by Brian Hill on November 2, 2012 at 1:58am

I could not find any others, but I do love Jessica and Hugo's ideas. Just the pure creativeness of the ideas is amazing. I mean, how do they come up with this stuff? The big thing about sOccket is that soccer is the most-played sport, with over 250 million players worldwide as of 2000. Hugo's idea might be a little more successful because almost anyone who owns a home, which is well over the amount of soccer players in the world, which will result in more use of the product. Although, sOccket will get sponsored by FIFA and Nike, etc., and labone might succeed Scott's, MiracleGro, etc. in the soil/garding section. Overall, I think that both innovations will be extremely successful.

I think Jessica has a very good idea kids can stay fit and make energy.

Comment by Medardo Vazquez Cruz on October 19, 2012 at 4:52pm

I think Jessica's idea is genius. It can help kids make energy for their while having fun. This idea could encourage kids to stay fit. I think this invention can change many lives.

Jessicas invention could change many lives in Africa and people all around the world that favor sports.
Some ways you could make ideas better could be making easy ways to travel foods and water for the more poor people to survive. Jessica's invention could change our world deeply and we keep on innovating like her.

Comment by John Smith on October 19, 2012 at 2:12am

Since I couldn't find anything on the online, I will say what I know. Many people are starting to use either different sources of energy or a new way to create energy. Jessica's and Hugo's ideas are amazing. Many people all over the world play soccer and just think how muck dirt and soil is in your backyard. These people are finding new, innovative ways to make energy for people who probably don't have as much.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
