STATUS:

What's the best way to share urgent information in a crisis?

Ushahidi is a powerful new tool to share information in a crisis — whether it's an earthquake, a pandemic, or outbreaks of violence. Your learn mission this week is to become an Ushahidi expert.

What is Ushahidi?

Who invented it?

How does it work in a real crisis?

Now that you know all about Ushahidi, how do you think it could be used in YOUR part of the world?

Use your local insight to identify a crisis that your city, town or village might face in the future.

  • What are the most likely natural disasters, food shortages, power outages, political crises, health outbreaks, or other social disruptions that YOU should be prepared to face with resilience? Pick one.
  • What different kinds of data would you track in the crisis?
  • What different kinds of urgent information and resources would you need to collect and share?

Your objective:

Identify a crisis you might face locally in the future — and then describe in a blog post, video or photo essay what different kinds of data you would track and which urgent information and resources the Ushahidi platform could help you share.

This objective is worth +15 local insight.

I live in a coastal area that's often plagued by hurricanes. This would be very helpful, should a superstorm ever hit. You could track sickness levels and medicinal/supply needs. LEARN7

I am conserned about air pollution in Georgia. We barley ever use any means of transportation other than cars. We can create a Carpool Campaign to help stop air pollution

In the future, the Chattahoochee River might become too polluted to filter, which would be really bad for Atlanta. We could use Ushahidi, however, to broadcast information about this to the public.

Comment by Olivia Koenig on December 6, 2012 at 2:13am

In the future, we will come face to face with extreme fresh water shortage. We can broadcast the information electronically to all countries involved.

In the future, there will be lack of water, famine, disease and pollution, we are really going to need Ushahidi then.

In the future we might face major water pollution. We would have to purify it and send a lot of money on that.

In the future diseases will spread throught many countries. we would need to create a cure or follow the spread. Ushaidi can help us on that.

In the future we may face serious affects of pollution in the U.S. Ushahidi could help clean up the mess we made to start over.
Comment by Hannah Rose Fountain on November 27, 2012 at 1:07am

There is a danger here in the US of a super volcano, and if we use Ushahidi, then we could get help and evacuate people who needed to be evacuated, which would save millions of lives.

Comment by Zeba Huque on November 27, 2012 at 12:20am

In the future, we might face the affects of Global Warming. can help get a TV or radio broadcast to aware the people what is going on and how to protect ourselves.

Comment by Kennedy Suttle on November 26, 2012 at 11:45pm
If a major crisis was to occur unexpected, then we could contact people to fix or create a solution. Which would be helpful to use email, facebook, twitter, computers, or instagram.
Comment by CeCe Street on November 26, 2012 at 11:16pm

Eventually there will be an earthquake that is bigger than ever. Ushahidi will be there to help and we could never be happier.

Comment by Caroline Thomson on November 26, 2012 at 10:48pm

If a crisis is to occur then we could notify the people who have the ability or knowledge to fix it. It can be as easy as a phone call, text message, or email. It is that easy.

Comment by Grant Reeder on November 26, 2012 at 9:09pm

In the case of an underwater earthquake(over 8.5) several tsunamis would form and devour coastlines. We could use smartphones, computers, and even possibly a horseback alert to warn the countries that are in crisis area which would allow them more time to prepare for the disaster.
