A crash course in changing the world.
An object symbolizing the indigenous knowledge of Western Kenya known as an Nganyi shrine. This process of predicting rain indirectly conserves the forests. Readers of Jared Diamond's COLLAPSE: HOW SOCIETIES CHOOSE TO FAIL OR SUCCEED know what a significant impact deforestation has upon the environment, so I thought that this was important knowledge to highlight. The United Nations Environment Programme website doc**ents this phenomenon and shows a picture of a member of the Nganyi clan with a straw stuck in a small bowl (see http://www.unep.org/IK/Nganyi.asp?id=Nganyi). That is what inspired me to make my sacred Nganyi shrine bowl. I added a swirling image of the cosmos in the middle and intend to fire this and glaze it.
