"It sounds like a great idea - the vacuum of politics, "the status quo", and complacency sucks up much of what we think of but by working together we can try and get a larger audience and hopefully find some traction for our crucial ideas."

New and returning participants for Season 2 (and those pondering joining the effort) should have a kind of recap/orientation piece which tries to pull up some of the best postings for each idea.  This will serve a variety of purposes.  For one it will show how high the bar can be for these responses, also it will be very informative and will leave anyone reviewing the examples with much more insight into those issues, and lastly it will help them to realize just what participating in this…See More

Making Indigenous Knowledge work to protect a Kenyan community

The indigenous knowledge project I reviewed was Viable institutional innovations with respect to community based natural resource management in developing and transitional economies which can be found here http://srdis.ciesin.org/cases/kenya-005.html

This case seemed like a great success on multiple fronts.

They were able to regain local control over their food choices. The power of a central government often can mean… Continue

The shocking state of affairs in Democratic Republic of Congo

The article I chose was http://www.unaids.org/en/knowledgecentre/resources/featurestories/archive/2010/20100511_drc.asp

While this article was seemingly one of hope I quickly had to ask myself what was the reason to look for success? A national initiative sounded like a good thing but in the same article it pointed out facts so shocking that I had to question any claims of… Continue

Why thank you. I was lucky because I grew up listening to my parents both speak Urdu/Hindi (basically the same thing) and Punjabi. Due to this it was very easy for me to learn Spanish in high school, and then French is a lot easier because of my Spanish background. I'm currently learning Quranic Arabic, so it would be too helpful if I visit an Arabic speaking country, but maybe one day I will learn conversational Arabic too as it has given so many words to Urdu.

Yes, the sun is gone, but hey, there's no snow!

I see you work at the U of M. How do you like it? My brother was a Philosophy/Physiology student there seven or so years ago. :)

Listen to the Right People

It's impossible to find a good solution to a problem you don't understand. I think that the first place to start when looking for a solution is understanding the problem by listening to the people it impacts the most. The knowledge one gains creates a foundation for a solution to be built on.Listening to the right people also leads to understanding the circ***tances of the problem: what other social, cultural or political elements contribute to this problem? What has already been tried? Who…See More
