ACT2 - Semi-guerilla Gardening in Aro Valley

I used to see these random, grass-filled tubs every day when I was studying at University. When I moved in to the neighborhood seven years later I decided it was definitely time to do something about it.

I thought they would make great micro-community vegetable gardens, providing free, local food. But they needed a lot of work before that could happen.

I cleared away all the bottles, rubbish, rocks and glass and weeded the tubs.

At first I just planted the… Continue

ACT1 Solar Sister - Light for women and girls in rural Africa

Appropriately, I am shadowing a light.

Solar Sister is an organization dedicated to bringing simple, solar-powered light to women and girls in rural Africa. This by-women, for-women service means things like:

  • Girls don't miss out on study time. As they normally attend to domestic chores after school, unlike their brothers who do their school assignments immediately when they get home from school, so the girls fall behind in school and…

LEARN1: Lessons from a tiny theatre in Wellington

I used to work in a tiny, under-funded, unkempt theater which consistently proved my theory that "poverty forces innovation". Some of the best shows I've ever seen were produced in this small, dilapidated space, not despite but because of their limitations.

The worst show I have seen in recent years had a huge budget, incredible cast and crew, awesome producers, enough technology to fly us to the moon and back - and no constraints. With all the… Continue

In the next couple of days i will try to elaborate on the issue of "Trust", which is important especially in Asia , when doing business, but in the context of building better societies. Communicating your philisophies and thoughts is not always easy to others, with different thoughts and different needs, but essential when we live in each others world.
Accepting that the world is not you, but everybody around you,to make it an envronment you should enjoy, try to fit into their lifestyles and not try to inflict yours in their environment.
Trust, give it time to develop, do not rush, because at the end both parties will benefit.

Hi Mia, I came to NZ 18 months ago to advise and help SME's to do business in Asia.
I worked over 30+years on ADB and Worlbank projects worldwide, but especially in Asia.
My aim now, is to be be part at the start of eradicating poverty , through education and other forms.
NZ has a high level of innovation and technology, however most of these are in the hands of SME's, who have not the moneys to bring the product, skills and services to the people who need these.
I am since arriving been talking to officials and organisations to combine these companies to units and advise them on facilitating them into the rspective markets.
This blog is a great source of communicating as a starting point, but I have learned communication is a face to face issues, especially when you are dealing with the Asian market.
My learnings from them, Trust is the basis of everything what lives.
Hope to keep this contact going

i think it is the nature of this kind of game
so much to do in such a short time
that ownership
(whose project/mission is any of it?)
is less important than
what actually gets done

be well!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Foods are vacc** sealded for easy…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
