Online Solutions Architecture

Bill McKibben and 350.org have called for an international work day to stop climate change on October 10, 2010. I have proposed to him that there should 350.org should provide an online solutions architecture in order to promote and support those practical demonstrations of climate solutions on October 10 and to make sure they continue after that day.350.org has already made a nod in that direction with its workparty-ideas page on their site but they could go much farther by linking to a number…See More

I don't know if this is in your databases but I just spent a couple of hours at MIT listening to African, American, and Indian partners with Amy Smith's D-Lab. Harish Hande of SELCO, Solar Electric Light Company, from Karnatika, India talked about his work. I've heard him before (and written about it athttp://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/11/7/144344/036 ) but this time he drilled deeper into what SELCO actually does. They don't concentrate on the technology but on the community. They listen…See More

SeeSaw Pump and Sodis

Gaviotas, Colombia has a seesaw pump that is similar to the PlayPumphttp://backspace.com/notes/2003/08/gaviotas.phpThey also have developed a pump that can increase the depth from which water can be pumped.Sodis is a method of solar disinfecting water using simple recycled, clear plastic PET bottles. Fill the bottles with low turbidity water, expose them to sunlight for six hours, and you will have disinfected the water enough for…See More

Small Scale Solar

I've been using affordable solar electricity in my life for the past four or five years. My bedroom is essentially off-grid with solar LED lights that charge in my south-facing window and a solar/dynamo radio that I had modified to charge AA batteries as well. My backpack has two solar LED lights that I use when riding at night, a flashing red LED and a steady white LED that velcroes to my helmet.Based upon my experience, I've tried to convince people that small scale solar really works and is…See More
