How can nanotechnology help solve the world’s water problems?

The lack of availability of clean water to many of the world’s population currently leads to suffering and premature death for millions of people, and as population pressures increase, climate change starts to bite, and food supplies become tighter (perhaps exacerbated by an ill-considered move to biofuels) these problems will only intensify. It’s possible that nanotechnology may be able to contribute to solving these problems.

One sometimes hears the criticism that there’s no point worrying about the promise of new nanotechnological solutions, when workable solutions are already known but aren’t being implemented, for political or economic reasons. That’s an argument that’s not without force, but the authors do begin to address it, by outlining what’s wrong with existing technical solutions. “These treatment methods are often chemically, energetically and operationally intensive, focused on large systems, and thus require considerable infusion of capital, engineering expertise and infrastructure” Thus we should be looking for decentralised solutions, that can be easily, reliably and cheaply installed using local expertise and preferably without the need for large scale industrial infrastructure.

To start with the problem of the sterilisation of water to kill pathogens, traditional methods start with chlorine. This isn’t ideal, as some pathogens are remarkably tolerant of it, and it can lead to toxic by-products. Ultra-violet sterilisation, on the other hand, offers a lot of promise – it’s good for bacteria, though less effective for viruses. But in combination with photocatalytic surfaces of titanium dioxide nanoparticles it could be very effective. Here what is required is either much cheaper sources of ultraviolet light, (which could come from new nanostructured semiconductor light emitting diodes) or new types of nanoparticles with surfaces excited by lower wavelength light, including sunlight.

Another problem is the removal of contamination by toxic chemicals, which can arise either naturally or through pollution. Problem contaminants include heavy metals, arsenic, pesticide residues, and endocrine disrupters; the difficulty is that these can have dangerous effects even at rather low concentrations, which can’t be detected without expensive laboratory-based analysis equipment. Here methods for robust, low cost chemical sensing would be very useful – perhaps a combination of molecular recognition elements integrated in nanofluidic devices could do the job.

The reuse of waste water offers hard problems because of the high content organic matter that needs to be removed, in addition to the removal of other contaminants. Membrane bioreactors combine the use of the sorts of microbes that are exploited in activated sludge processes of conventional sewage treatment with ultrafiltration through a membrane to get faster throughputs of waste water. The tighter the pores in this sort of membrane, the more effective it is at removing suspended material, but the problem is that this sort of membrane quickly gets blocked up. One solution is to line the micro- and nano- pores of the membranes with a single layer of hairy molecules – one of the paper’s co-authors, MIT’s Anne Mayes, developed a particularly elegant scheme for doing this exploiting self-assembly of comb-shaped copolymers.

Of course, most of the water in the world is salty (97.5%, to be precise), so the ultimate solution to water shortages is desalination. Desalination costs energy – necessarily so, as the second law of thermodynamics puts a lower limit on the cost of separating pure water from the higher entropy solution state. This theoretical limit is 0.7 kWh per cubic meter, and to date the most efficient practical process uses a not at all unreasonable 4 kWh per cubic meter. Achieving these figures, and pushing them down further, is a matter of membrane engineering, achieving precisely nanostructured pores that resist fouling and yet are mechanically and chemically robust.

A shift towards central heating systems has occurred, using oil and gas-fired boilers to provide distributed heat through radiators, and although modern buildings can now consider new and innovative heating systems, such as air and ground-sourced heat pumps, old properties need a good level of heating and improved insulation to provide comfort and healthy living standards.

Over the last twelve months the price of heating oil has gone up by almost 80%, reaching over £600 for 1000 litres in January 2010, however the cost of wood pellets has remained constant; £230 per tonne (Orkney prices). Oil is more energy dense than wood pellets, and for a direct comparison the cost of wood should be doubled to calculate if using wood pellets would be more economic. In January 2010 wood pellets were the most economic fuel in Orkney.

Kazakhstan is the 9th biggest country in the world, but the population is only 17 mln, occupying only 20-30% of territory. The rest is steppes and green fields. Doubtless my country has great potential to grow animals; sheep, horses, cows can be grown in rural villages creating job opportunities and improving well-being. Indeed, most people nowadays realise that it can be good source of business, but still non-sufficient finances and support hinder them from starting animal farms. It is shame and funny for me that in fact we import meat from Australia and other countries. And price of meat is really high comparatively with price of living animal. So creating a whole chain for growing animal, cutting it and selling meat should be created in order to motivate farmers who are disappointed due to low price of animal which they sell lively. Moreover, having these animals mean that farmer, family will be full without having any other jobs and worries.

To sum up, I believe that animal farms are good way of diversifying KZ's economy and feeding thousands of people who do get a share of oil income which is main source of country's budget.
IMAGINE 2tag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-03-15:4871302:BlogPost:362732010-03-15T01:03:09.000ZTursynbayeva Sholpanhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/TursynbayevaSholpan

It is obvious that one day oil resources will reach minimum level and people will need to use new sources of petroleum and energy. Although, oil power now stopping people and leaders, shift to new lifestyle of using EV, causing damage to Earth, in future this process seems inevitable. Does it mean that we should wait until oil will come to end? I do not know... because I am afraid that it will be too late. The solution i can see again is to educate and increase awareness of people about damages, air pollution and health. And provide and build electric chargers on roads, facilitate and collaborate with Governments to promote use of them.

People will benefit from this program, by finding new place to feed their families, by being proud to help economy, from development of infrastructure such as railway system, which will be improved to attract tourists, and simply by being close to nature and at the same time to have all development necessary for education and well being of their children.

And last... in 2020...I see myself as a wife of wonderful person and a mother.

Alchemy, I will wait for your call in 2020, hoping that you will say that Tokyo food crises had been avoided because of changes and contributions made by all people in the world.

Inspiration Herotag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-03-05:4871302:BlogPost:160702010-03-05T12:48:52.000ZTursynbayeva Sholpanhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/TursynbayevaSholpan
My hero is Prof.Eva Schuepbach, I met her during my Global Project Management Course. Although her background is on sustainability, her rich experience of successful sustainability projects lead her to my university. She has 20 years of experience in training of people about global warming effects, eco-friendliness and ways how to decrease wastage and use maximum green products in companies. Prof.Schuepbach was the leader of several European Union projects in China, Europe and Mongolia.

Why I am taking her as my hero model? Because after her course my life has started to change. And due to her now I know that I am making my own contribution to save the World. After having several sessions with her I realized that simple decreasing the consumption of electricity, water and recycling wastage can save Earth.

In future I would like to have my own eco-friendly restaurant, where energy saving bulbs, organic food, solar energy, recycling will be used and implemented. Of course, what I do might not have so much effects on prevention of global warming. However, if every person would start doing the same way, we can save thousands of energy Kbts, liters of water, which is hardly available for some nations.

By this I would like to thank my Prof. again and mention that fortunately I meet her almost every week. And what I learned from her is priceless.
Vision: Keep a look out for other challenges or new solutions all the time.tag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-03-03:4871302:BlogPost:98062010-03-03T23:00:00.000ZTursynbayeva Sholpanhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/TursynbayevaSholpan

Indeed, life is full of challenges and some might think why we need to look for other challenges and solutions if we have them already? I believe people who think this way may not succeed in long term, because without continuous learning one day you stop develop yourself and will stuck in one place. Your solutions which seemed to be brightest decisions might turn to mistakes and losses. Being challenged with new things you keep growing mentally, emotionally and experience and knowledge gained through each new challenge and task will make you the person "whom the world waited anxiously" to solve problems.

Yes, there might be one perfect solution for the problem, but it is the best solution for that period of time, not for afterward. If our ancestors believed that the only way to dig a hole was using small utensils, nowadays we might not have even seen new technologies. Only due to eagerness for new solution and challenge made and can make the world best place to live.
......Studying in post soviet and western country I can understand why there is much difference between East and West in terms of development. Simple example can be given from post soviet university where teachers say to students: "I know everything. So I know the solution and here is solution" and western university where teachers say: "I have experience in this, but I really love to listen to your ideas. There might be better solutions". Comparing these two situations, my dear friends, please, answer to the question, "which way is more challenging for you?". For me...it is western way. Because following that way I know I can learn new things and I can think and find solution myself. Thus, I call all generations to continuous learning and looking for new challenges and solutions.
