*New Concept* Meme - a meme can be an idea, behavior, or strategy that is propagated between individuals (carriers) as if it were a virus. Usually people take on memes simply because it is helpful to them in some way, however, this practice is not always conscious.

Here are some helpful memes that I'd like to consciously propagate:

A project page - The theory behind the project page is to have a single blog that is dedicated to the primary projects and activities you're working on and want people to know about. example: project page

The agent signature link - Everytime you post include in your signature a link back to your project page. example: Cheers! Perry perry's projects

Project Homepage - The theory behind a project homepage is that you can host an on-going project plan and discussion while also leaving a bread-crumb trail (links) back to the original project homepage when you comment on a related post. example1: project homepage example2: related post

Use of Urgent Evoke's Wiki - check out the wiki, add content, and try to follow the standard tagging suggestions. example: tagging

Make your own Special Agent Missions - The theory is that you can create your own missions for the community to participate in. I saw Jake Baird do this first with his AVATAR1 tag assignment. Also add the tag SPECIALAGENTMISSION to your post so people can find it using tags. Since Jake, I've used it twice. example1: PROCESS1 example2: OUTCOME1

That's all for now! But you can add your own memes by participating in....

Special Agent Mission: Meme Madness
(good way to earn a +Resourcefulness)

Criteria:

"Critics of the game acknowledge that it's a noble effort to empower some of the world's most impoverished people, but they say the $500,000
how many young minds in Africa will be reached."

Now, instead of getting upset let's assume they're playing Devil's Advocate and use this as an opportunity to begin a discussion. What are some of the end-goals people would like to achieve? How do we reach young minds in Africa? What outcomes could we create from Evoke as individuals or a group?

To kickoff the brainstorming here's a few provocative propositions:

By May of 2010 -

The Evoke community has curated a impressive collection of actionable information in all key areas of social innovation and change (including, food/energy production, waste/water/land management, community/team development, political action, and life-long learning skills such as information literacy). This information takes the form of a Wiki, Instructables, YouTube shorts, and comic books that portray the hero's journey, how to create change in your community, or the application of a low tech solutions.

The Evoke community has collectively fund raised $1 Million dollars for the creation of fifty community youth centers in different cities around Africa staffed with mentors and computers to facilitate local youth involvement in change and education. Efforts are assisted by a still lively Evoke community enabling global support for local empowerment.

An Evoke Social Innovator training camp is created to serve as a gap-year for high school graduates. The experience includes exposure to foundational facilitation and communication skills, problem solving strategies, tracts for specific skill development, and an internship abroad with a Non-profit or NGO.

Examples of processes include: Appreciative Inquiry, Open Space Technology, World Cafe, Future Search, etc.

For more information check out the project page (here)

Activities
Fox

Zotero -
Created a Evoke
Network group in Zotero, a powerful collaboration tool, and posted a
blog announcing its launch. Also spent some time adding some initial
content to the group library so people can see how it works and already
begin to benefit from the content. (If you've never heard of Zotero
before you can visit the Evoke wiki
or Zotero's homepage for more
information.)

Evoke Wiki - Spent some time
adding content to the Evoke wiki
specifically the Collaboration
I resonated with Paul Polak's second point, "talk to the people who have the problem - and LISTEN to what they have to say."

With all my enthusiasm for making a difference sometimes I get caught up in just wanting to 'go go go!' I think Paul's point brings out the importance of slowing down, connecting with the people you're trying to assist and finding out what exactly it is you're assisting them with.

Other than making sure your energy is being directed in the most effective way, listening to people has an extremely important affect. It cultivates receptivity.

For your actions or words to have impact the receiver must be open. For me, receptivity means openness; it means being willing and able to receive.

Don't take my word for it, reflect on your own experience. Think of a time when you accepted the advice or help of a friend, a time when you refused it or got upset. Or a time when you tried to help and your good intentions weren't well received. You might find a key ingredient in these experiences is the presence of receptivity (or lack there of).

In my own reflections I know that the times when I am most open to receiving from others is when I am open to receiving from others. This may seem straight forward and simple, but it is simply powerful...

"The times when I am most open to receiving from others is when I am open to receiving from others."

It is at these times that I am receptive.

Here are some of the ways I have found others create receptivity in me, and I in others.

I am listened to, I feel seen, heard, and understood.

The person is open and authentic with me.

They receive me: my words, feelings, and energy.

They show authentic compassion and interest in me and my needs and feelings.

What they have to offer is relevant to my needs.

I find truth in what they share with me; it speaks to my common sense or intuition.

It is easier to receive input from someone else when you feel they have received you. Heard you. Seen you. When we feel understood by someone we become open and connected with that person. Ready to hear what they have to say. Ready to receive them.

Receptivity is reciprocal, if you are receptive to others, odds are they will open up and be receptive to you. Openness creates openness.

Practice good active listening skills, restate what you think they are saying to you and ask them if you understood them correctly. Ask them where it is they want to go (the future state) and if you have the ability, maybe you can assist them in getting there.

By listening first your energy will not only be effective, it will be received and appreciated.
