The boy scouts would be an ideal resource to tap into in case of a dire emergency and my rank as Eagle would give me the prestige within the community to mobilize such an effort. What would make the scouts so effective are:

The boy scouts are so numerous (well over 1 million strong)

Active troops exist all over the country

The scouts could be trusted to hand out aid, give first aid when needed, build shelters, organize and carry out food relief efforts. Plus anything else they would be asked to do. The scouts motto is: be prepared. Knowing the training they receive, in the pandemic of 2011 the scouts would be prepared.
Want to get angry?tag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-05-10:4871302:BlogPost:1444012010-05-10T05:08:04.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute

While reading the Nieman Guide to covering pandemics, specifically, "coming to terms with uncertainty" I was interested in what was said regarding this:

"The facts and the scientific basis for each of these is the same, and the uncertainty is the same. But scientists have the luxury and also the duty of reserving judgment and not making strong statements until they
know, or think they know, what’s going on. Communicators and responders
have to act whether or not they can be certain. They use the same data,
but they use it in a different way.

Early responders, particularly
those like WHO and CDC, must have a different standard of evidence, a
sort of guilty until proven innocent standard. Action has to be taken
before all the evidence is in. The reasons are obvious: There are delays
in getting samples to labs, delays in getting results, delays in
getting enough data/samples to be certain, and delays in performing analysis on those data. Waiting until those delays pass loses time.
Beyond that, once the tests are done, there is still some uncertainty.

Therefore, if first responders want to have some hope of containing an
outbreak, they will have to respond to false alarms. Unfortunately,
perhaps, this same group of people that is supposed to be responding
intentionally to false alarms also has the duty of trying to maintain
public understanding and public calm.

What I found most interesting is the idea that these response groups will receive word that there may or may not be a pandemic and they then have to go and tell everyone, just in case. These response groups also carry the heavy burden or keeping people calm when that's exactly the opposite of what most people do--especially when in groups. If you are a student of Feud you know that deep down humans are irrational creatures. This irrationality however makes us very predictable. Example, in the recent Boston water crisis it was predictable that people would run to stores buying up water, that stores themselves would overstock their water supplies--even raise prices. Predictability allows for replanning. What these response groups should be doing, if they aren't already, is before they make an announcement--get everything ready. If because of this new threat everybody is going to have to have to wear masks, then before you make the announcement, mail masks to everyone. That way people feel secured by the fact that the people in charge are taking immediate and tangible steps to ensure everyone's safety.
On my death bedtag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-05-10:4871302:BlogPost:1443522010-05-10T03:44:42.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute

my advice to anyone who would ask right now, would be: ask and you shall
receive, observe life and you will understand it, love and care for
others, work together--humans are better in groups, everything in
moderation--even moderation, never stop seeking the truth--the kind that lives whether you believe it or not, quarrel with others...debate...share ideas--as steel sharpens steel so may one man sharpen another.

but who knows, in 20 years these thoughts might be obsolete never mind 77. Then the focus of the piece becomes how the number of Yami people are dwindling, may of the youths leave the island and never return.

by the end the video was really about the loss of these people's culture. I have never felt a strong cultural heritage so maybe my perception is skewed but I don't feel bad about culture loss. Culture is something that always exists, it is a byproduct of our collective existence. If cultural traditions are forgotten I think that is because they weren't worth remembering. Ideas can become vestigial like anything else. So while I watch this video and do feel a little sad, I am not upset, I see what is happening as a shift that is necessary and inevitable.

On an aside about cultural change, the increased interaction between culturals has certainly accelerated our forgetfulness. I think that as we begin to form a global culture that we pick and choose subconsciously which ideas we like and which are going to be lost to the mist of time.
Bedford 2020tag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-05-08:4871302:BlogPost:1421952010-05-08T03:30:00.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute

Because of all of the traffic both sides of the road have developed into shopping plazas that follow the great snake all through the town. My vision for Bedford 2020 is a town without this "great road"

There is a really strong cycling community in Bedford so I image a town where the road is used for cyclists who want to get out for exercise and get around town. A public transportation system would fulfill the need of more serious transportation. The great road would be done away with and no longer would Bedford serve as a highway between Concord and Lexington.

The future is uncleartag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-05-08:4871302:BlogPost:1421002010-05-08T00:32:21.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute

If you don't know, I go to art school and yesturday we had a guest speaker, Hoon Kim. Hoon Kim is a Korean graphic designer who does amazing work using sight and sound to display information. One of the works that he presented in his talk was a new system to depict value using sound and color. The system is based on current US currency but I can easily imagine it representing the credit. Whenever a transaction is made a series of tones is created that represent the value of the purchase or sale (5 cents being a low quiet tone, 100$ being a high frequency loud tone) also their are color bars which also use a similar system (low value = cold color, high value = warm color)

Hoon calls the system e100 and you can see it on his site here: http://whynotsmile.com/
I can't link you straight to his work but if you go under NEW MEDIA and then scroll down you will see it.

This project was part of his graduate work at the Rhodes Island School of Design (Generally considered the best American art school). He also created a short video that shows a transaction in action--check it out here.

Despite it's hangups I love this system for the playful use of sound and color.

Would love comments but don't powervote anything but Knowledgeshare on this evidence because it's not my work.
The Issue with Third Rate Wealthtag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-04-08:4871302:BlogPost:859052010-04-08T21:30:00.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute
While reading the Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas I came across an interesting section. The immeasurably wealthy Count of Monte Cristo is talking to Danglars the chief banker of Paris. The count remarks that while Dangars fortune is great it consists entirely of third rate wealth and thus it is actually worth half of what it is estimated. Humbled, Danglars demands for the count to explain, and of course he does.

The count explains his theory of wealth as thus;

"I make…

The count remarks that while Dangars fortune is great it consists entirely of third rate wealth and thus it is actually worth half of what it is estimated. Humbled, Danglars demands for the count to explain, and of course he does.

The count explains his theory of wealth as thus;

"I make three assortments in fortune---first-rate, second-rate, and third-rate fortunes.

I call those first-rate which are composed of treasures one possesses under one's hand, such as mines, lands, and funded property, in such states as France, Austria, and England,

I call those second-rate fortunes, gained by manufacturing enterprises, joint-stock companies, viceroyalties and principalities.

...I call those third-rate fortunes, comprised of a fluctuating capital, dependent upon the will of others, or upon chances which a bankruptcy involves or a false telegraph shakes, such as banks, speculations of the day--in fact, all the operations under the influences of greater or lesser mischances."

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas

First rate wealth involving the least level of risk. As the recent financial crash shows third-rate wealth involves the highest level of risk.

I think that getting the dollar backed by some tangible first-rate wealth would be a huge step towards rebuilding our economy, but I am sure that others would disagree. In terms of what is going to be the future of money, I really like the idea of person to person transfers. Remove the middle man (credit cards and banks) each person has an account and I can transfer money quickly to whom ever I please. I think that if systems like this catch on, we would see people transferring small sums of money very frequently for small things like, "hey thanks +1dollar"

This post has lost its way--i will edit it so that it makes sense this weekend.
Time For Knowledgetag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-04-08:4871302:BlogPost:856702010-04-08T17:15:13.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute

I liked the relationship that his family developed with a neighbor--both parties benefiting from the exchange. I though about how I could form a relationship like that and then one day I realized that I already had. I currently am interning with a local glass artists named Peter Houk. I spend 7-8 hours a week with him and receive no pay. My main task is to vectorize images that he draws. In exchange for this service he teaches me; About his techniques, his working habits/studio practices, and his art. I love every minute that I get to spend with him because of how much I am learning and I especially love that in turn I can help him.

Currently working on two projects with him, they should be done before the end of EVOKE so I'll post some photos when they are all finished.
Nick Heyming Needs YOUR Helptag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-04-03:4871302:BlogPost:792462010-04-03T21:55:21.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute

Find out what grows best in your climate, where you live.

Find out what edible and useful plants are native to your area.

Explore the food and nature-crafts that the indigenous people of your area created.

Learn about any colonizers to your area and what food they introduced.

What are some heirloom or landrace plants (or livestock) that grow your area?

What kind of indigenous cultivation and fertilization was used in your area? How did they ensure long-term fertility, instead of short
term yields?

Does any of this appeal to you? Seem tasty, useful, interesting? What do you want to grow?

I don't know about you but when I read that this list, not only is it confusing, but it sounds like a lot of work--but I think the issue is in the presentation, so here's what I need. I need 5 motivated agents who want to be a part of a pilot group. The goal being to eventually re-phrase the research steps so that they are understandable and manageable. Once the pilot group finishes their work I will edit/design a better survey for the community. There is no way that I can do this myself so I'm hoping that a few of you will want to be a part.

Message me or post here if your interested and I'll get in touch.

PS also if you are playing Evoke banking I am paying paying out 25 EVs
Design to the Rescuetag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-04-03:4871302:BlogPost:782972010-04-03T03:00:00.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute

Hi all

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Niels LaWhite, chief scientist for Second Wind and ask him a few questions about Wind Energy. I was hoping that he would give me some guidance with my project, instead he opened my eyes to the current wind energy situation in America and how I can help.

One thing that Niels told me which I found very interesting is that the Wind turbines that we use today are based on Danish designs. When the American's first started building turbines they believed they had a HUGE advantage because at the time America was the world leader in helicopter technology--it was far from the truth. The mechanics that go into making a helicopter work are all controllable forces. The blades spin and generate a controllable amount of lift. Well wind is as chaotic and turbulent a force as they come. So when you try an use tight gear boxes and finely tuned gear ratios that work at say 25mph winds, what happens when their is a gust of 40mphs? The turbine breaks!

The Danish on the other hand had a completely different approach. They had a government policy that helped inventors and engineers who were interested in wind tech get started. The government provided technical schematics and aid as a starting point. Then when these inventors modified the design, before they could release the product and make money, the government would take the turbine and test it and work with the inventor to improve the design. You see the Danish government didn't want any turbines to reflect poorly upon the country that made them. Smart huh?

I made this to explain the rest of the technical side of our discussion.

Niels and I then talked about the current state of wind power in America. He said that we don't need futuristic technologies like what Saul Griffith is working on, we have the tools we need NOW. All we need to do is get proper wind funded. Niels works for Second Wind, and if you didn't click the link above what they do is sell wind diagnostic equipment. This equipment is used to measure the wind in a location over a year long period. Once the test is complete the company can tell with a high level of certainty whether or not a wind turbine would be cost effective. Turbine are very expensive to install and they only really last for about five years until the rotors, gear box and other systems begin to fail.

Wind turbines can be very cost effective energy generating machines as long as the due diligence was done up front. Niels said that his general rule is, "if you like where you live, it would be a bad place for a turbine." 20mph winds have enough power to open a car door, so sorry to everyone who thinks that they are going to save the world by putting up a turbine on your house (me including).

So how does design come to save the day? I'll tell you. As a designer it is my job to inform people in clear and visually interesting ways. I believe that if people understood a bit more about what goes into make a
turbine effective they would see them as a real energy source and not some backyard bs. So I am going to make a poster series and maybe a flash movie or two that inform and inspire.

What do you all think? Any ideas?
Anything is possibletag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-04-02:4871302:BlogPost:780722010-04-02T21:55:34.000ZWintermutehttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/Wintermute

While following the torrents of posts on blogs like WHATS GOING ON?? & Agents losing their sparks, I noticed that Stefano mentioned that the recent panamericana fiasco has caused him to have doubts about EVOKE. It made me sad that Stefano might leave so I wrote him a message.

I decided to post the message because I wrote it from the heart and I think that it might help some others.
no need to power vote, this is just to help heal.

for some context this is in response to Stefano's post

I understand your sentiment. You felt as I believe many of us did that this; game, experiment, social endeavor, whatever you want to call
it--was pure, a digital utopia.

However the situation with Pan brought to light a number of things that
seemed alien to the original spirit of the game. The intervention of the
admin (regardless of how justified) seems to have tainted the original
purity. The spell was broken--and with that doubt of EVOKE came a doubt
of ourselves.

I saddens me that pan caused such a rift to be torn, and the the
administrators took the path of hard intervention--but that's how it
happened. This system of gaming is very new, and they still haven't
figured out a lot of the kinks; in my opinion a conflict like this was
inevitable. It is now up to us as EVOKE agents to determine how we will
let this effect the course of the game.

I think It is important to realize how little has actually changed; The
reasons that we all signed up are the same. There are still THOUSANDS of
talented and creative agents who are eager to get involved. We can
still change the world. Two things are certain:

What was lost can never be regained.

EVOKE will
go on.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know how I felt. It may be
selfish, but I hope that you do come back to EVOKE.
