Hearty Greetings

This is my second time around Evoke
so I've decided to choose a different mentor than the one I followed last year and continue to do so, Alexandra Morton who is still going strong to save our wild salmon here on the west coast, I'm writing the letters and still doing what I can to support her. But a very soon time after I started playing Evoke, I added another mentor to my list.

It made my eyes pop
when I saw the number of hours and money spent in Jane's TED talk. Imagine the million's of dollars spent on virtual carrots while someone in another country starves for lack of a bite of food.

We all know Jane
McGonigal here and if you don't, get cracking she is the one who is behind Evoke, Gameful and her latest one, Find the Future. Her movement to create games for the social good has begun.

Jane is
the author of Reality is Broken, which is opening up people's eyes to the number of hours and amount of money being spent on games. I guess I hadn't given it much thought given I'm not a gamer except for Evoke and then Gameful, now back to Evoke, while popping into Second Life for my volunteer work at the Nonprofit Commons. These aren't really games in my mind. Although I so love seeing my little runes sparkling and my Monster treats pile up each time I see them :)

One of the greatest
videos that I discovered last round in Evoke which left a lasting impression for a lifetime on me is this one, "How to Start a Movement" by Derek Sivers. Right then and there I decided I would the 'follower' of Jane and she would be my silent mentor.

So I did my best
in Evoke 1, and I've been doing my best to keep the Gameful site lively, heck I even rounded up a team and brought them back over here. I did stretch the rules just a bit to get some of them in, which I'll explain in a later post. Look out for the GUEM team we are 41 people from 17 countries and I'm excited. This is the first true unit of the Evoke Network in my mind, so I'm calling them 'Evoke Unit1'. This is only the beginning.

Derek says
"One thing a leader needs is the guts and courage to stand out and be ridiculed" which has happened to Jane, there's been a flurry of posts around the web picking and kicking at her vision admidst the cries of "Yes this is the answer!". But, having followed her tweets and Facebook for some time now I only see it making her stronger.

It is from reading about
and learning from Jane and in Evoke and Gameful, that I have started my own little movement which is to inspire ordinary people to make a difference for the good in life for all, however small. But first, I'm all eyes and ears learning what it takes to be a great leader, and I must add, I'm having a lot of fun playing these games while I'm at it. Not bad for a non-gamer.

Thank you Jane
I do believe your aspirations for a Gameful Monster to win a Nobel Prize is scathingly brilliant, it will happen, and I hope it's you.
Living on a small island for the most part as I do, we already have a very tight-knit community of wonderful caring people who come together for all sorts of project or parties. Living on a small island for the most part as I do, we already have a very tight-knit community of wonderful caring people who come together for all sorts of project or parties. A call for a meeting regarding Transition Town in our newsletter caught my eye: Quadra Island Transtion Initiative http://www.quadraisland.ca/transition/index.html

The Transition initiative is gaining momentum and I'm proud to be living here, we were the first to ban plastic bags and now we're on to being a Transtion Town. "Transition towns are communities that have embraced a set of established principles and concepts with the aim of becoming more socially and economically self-reliant"

One solution for us islanders, called "Spin Farming" would work. Basically it's sharing, farmers or landowners share out a portion of their land for people who don't have the space to grow their own, then this can be used for themselves or sold at the weekly market we have. "Local, fresh, organic food being cultivated within the confines of land currently in place" says Geoffrey McNamara, his article in our newsletter got my attention. We're already doing this with our Community Garden on donated farmland, but this would expand across the island and encourage more participants.

I hope this gets your attention as well. Here's the link to the Transition Network.org http://transitionnetwork.org/ This may just be what your community is looking for too.

Virtual reality is different from Urgent Evoke, or this type of Social Media game. Not necessarily better, this type has it's place.
UPDATE 20100515: I tried again to buy local veggies from our Sat Community market but none available again. I'll just have to try best I can to buy local products as close to home as I can until the gardens have grown.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I made a promise with myself to go all out and only buy local fresh food on our small island here once the Saturday community market opened. I was there first thing on opening day... and all I could find was rhubarb and herb seedlings to plant. I didn't start a garden myself this year for several reasons, so passed on the seedlings and rhubarb wasn't really appealing to me not being a pie-maker. Hung around and chatted with everyone, bought some homemade cards from kids raising money for a school trip then headed for our grocery store.
"It's just not the season yet", advised the store manager. He was filling me in on the issues of buying local for his store, I know he does what he can to promote local goods.
Our conversation had started off with him asking me what I was doing taking photos in his store, I had been reported as having 'suspicious behavour' by one of his staff apparently. I'm sure I looked a bit crazy zooming in on the signs of "Grown in BC" as I decided to at least buy things as close to home as possible. I understand their concern, I looked normal but taking pics of carrots and tomatoes then moving over to the bread etc. wandering around the store.
I explained I was trying to buy local and documenting my effort, and he shared the issues he faced - transportation/supply and demand problems. He walked me around the store to point out other items from BC - wonderful!
I passed on the explaination I was gathering evidence for this Urgent Evoke game lol it would have been too much but I will tell him later.
Someone overheard me and told me about the weekly market on the mainland (Vancouver Island) where there's local meat and cheese, it may just be worth a walk-on ferry ticket, or I'll plan to go to town that day.
Week 1 of my buy local has begun, found enough local (BC) to make some decent meals yay!
IMAGINE4 WHY NonProfits Use A VIRTUAL WORLD TO COLLABORATEtag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-05-16:4871302:BlogPost:1499812010-05-16T07:58:00.000ZBuffy Bhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/BuffyB
Opening Keynote with Randy Mott, Hewlett Packard
Meet Randy Mott, EVP/CIO of Hewlett-Packard -- and famed CIO alumnus of Dell and Wal-Mart (where as CIO, Sam Walton paid him the ultimate compliment: "Man, you'd make a great store manager.") Mott was the driving force behind HP's amazingly-successful 2006-2008 bid to triple data bandwidth, collapse 85 datacenters to just six, cut through legacy tech and application complexity, shift procedures so that 70% of IT time is spent on innovation (while cutting IT spending in half), and save HP over $1 billion annually in energy costs. After hearing his keynote, you'll know how he did it.
Keynoting Live from London (in video and 3D), meet Simon Mingay, VP Research at Gartner, and get a deep-dive into the art and science of thriving in a fast-changing economy and regulatory environment, where carbon has a price and affects P&L and balance sheets. Choose to be buffeted by coming changes, or you use Mingay's common-sense discipline around 'dematerialization,' analytics and process control to start measuring and making changes today, so your organization can profit - not falter - tomorrow.
And more! It's all on the Agenda page of the Virtual Event Portal.
UPDATE 20100514:
I realized as much as I want to, I have come to terms with the fact I will not be available to work on this during the timeframe posted, so I am withdrawing this draft I posted for comments.
I do believe we should have at least a national signal sequence for Red Yellow Green status.
I couldn't find that one existed anywhere so I think it's a good idea that is needed perhaps I can work on it next Season with a team.
What if there was a emergency and a small isolated community needed to be evacuated quickly but phone lines and power were out? What if they didn't get evacuated because they didn't know there was a need to? What if there was a spare vehicle or boat but they were left behind?
In early times, communities used a signal of beating drums, a gong or a town bell to signal danger. Runners or riders on a donkey or horse would spread the word.
In London, England during the World War II, everyone knew what to do when they heard the air raid siren.
Today, if these communities are the same as mine, I imagine they use door-to-door personal contact, phone, email, text message or even head to the coffee shop or local gathering place to see what's up.
There is an international "SOS" signal for a mayday signal or call for help, but not for the "Red Yellow Green" status commonly used to identify a threat, such as terrorism or fire hazard.
My Evokation will address three issues that will impact an isolated community in an emergency:
A emergency evacuation signal system does not exist.
Communities are not trained or prepared for an evacuation.
Communities may not be able to rely on government evacuation assistance or transportation depending on the nature and scale of the emergency.
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Design a Emergency Signal Sequence (i.e. Red Yellow Green blasts) similar to the international SOS signal.
Develop and implement a cost effective, self-sufficient, wireless and remote-controlled signal device (i.e. air horn) that suit any weather condition (hot/cold/wet/dry) and does not interfere with emergency services (police, ambulance, fire) sirens or marine navigation air horn signals.
Develop and deliver training content and awareness material such as pamphlets.
Specific to an island communty, Create a Role for 'Designated Boater' and incorporate into emergency procedures.
Specific to land communities, Create a Role for 'Designated Transport' and incorporate into emergency procedures.
MISSION
To develop a globally accepted Emergency Signal Sequence for the codes "Red Yellow Green" for broadcasting in the event of an emergency which requires evacuation. This will be adopted as a world standard for emergency notification, similar to the "SOS" sequence which is an international call for help.
To develop a cost-effective Broadcast Device suitable for international use to be installed in isolated or remote villages, towns or islands where they depend on word-of-mouth to warn of a pending emergency for which they must evacuate such as: a wildfire; an earthquake; terrorism; a tsunami; or a pandemic outbreak.
To develop training and education content for the local communities so they understand what to do and where to go when the Emergency Signal is broadcast.
INTRODUCTION
Thank you to Urgent Evoke for providing the training and inspiration to become a beginner social innovator.
It was through my participation that I dreamed and pondered what my community needed to become more resilient and could be of benefit to a global audience.
It was because of what I learned that I was able to apply a new awareness to issues that, to my knowledge, all small and isolated communities face including small island residents.
I will use my community as a test case to pilot and streamline the implementation process if my Evokation and all components are possible. The issues we face are common to isolated communities in any country.
My first $1000 will be for a feasibility study to confirm my vision is possible. This is a long-term project with much to be developed and sorted. It is the beginning step of a long journey.
My chosen mentor is someone who is committed to inspire, challenge and teach me, I have no preference.
BACKGROUND
I live on a small island of about 3,000 residents where the potential threats of wildfires, earthquakes and influenza outbreaks are all very possible.
We are entering what is predicted to be one of the worst fire hazard seasons ever, surpassing the 2009 record. Last year we had people who were infected by the H1N1 virus. We are in the earthquake default zone. We are situated between British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island where there is potential for a tsunami to flood the straits.
We haven't had an emergency that has required island evacuation. A sample of new and long-time residents indicated they aren't prepared and don't know what to do or where their designated emergency facility is.
We depend on a ferry or an after-hour privately-ownded water taxi company to get us to the mainland (Vancouver Island) where the hospital is located.
We have a high number of transient residents: cottagers, hotel guests; day visitors; campers; and drive-through Cortez Island ferry passengers who take our ferry to Vancouver Island.
We have an active Emergency Response team of Government officials, Health, Police, Fire and volunteers who have been working hard to set plans for fire hazard and lengthy power outages.
Most residents and businesses are prepared to be self-sufficient for 72 hours as power outages are an often occurrence during our winter storm season. Our community centre and local resorts with large generators and space have volunteered their premises as emergency housing facilities.
The existing emergency notification process uses a 'buddy' system to get the word out with the Fire Department and volunteers going door to door. This may not work if the 'buddy' lead is not available, and puts undo pressure on the Fire and Emergency Response Teams to have to notify more people than necessary or find alternatives to spread the word. This is especially true for the residents who live away from the main population areas.
The majority of our residents live in the southern area of the island; there is a growing population in the middle and northern areas. There is one road from north to south. Fallen trees could block the road, power/phone lines could be down, and some areas of the island do not have mobile phone coverage.
These residents could potentially be cut off and need an alternative method to be notified and evacuated in the event of an emergency.
The one ferry we have may not be able to handle an island-wide evacuation in a timely manner but we have many resident boaters who know the waters well.
Campbell River boaters are within distance for possible additional support.
Depending on the nature of the emergency, we may not be able to rely on government to provide us with evacuation assistance and transportation.
BENEFITS
Potential reduced loss of life.
Reduction of government emergency resources required by being self-organized.
Reduction of time to evacuate the island by enlisting the local boaters and spare boats.
Builds community strength and resilience by being prepared which also reduces the fear factor.
Serves the entire island community with the exception of hearing-disabled residents. NOTE: A separate plan for the disabled will be incorporated into the emergency procedures.
Does not rely on phone or word-of-mouth.Serves as a role model and knowledge share with other remote or isolated communities. Tourist promotion by being prepared (shows a cohesive and progressive community).
TBD as identified by feasibility study.
RISKS
Project is not a success, government viewed as cause, loss of reputation.
False alarm will have a major impact on the community.
Major Stakeholders cannot agree with the process.
Not enough boats to handle passenger counts (perceived safety thinking boats are on their way).
Time constraints, I may not have enough time to take on such a large project.
Lack of resources (government staff, volunteers, subject matter experts).
TBD as identified by feasibility study.
The game is wrapping up, I'm getting emails from Agents wanting to keep in touch. Like-minded people I know I would not have otherwise met. Wonderful!
It struck me right away that this wasn't a game, and when I saw Jane McGonical's TED talk, I knew my hunch was right. Well, it is a game in that there's a comic strip but this is no Superman storyline. We Agents know don't we. There's some serious stuff going on here.
But, try an explain that to someone who is not a gamer, isn't 'hip with that stuff young people do' so let's not call this a game anymore. Because when I try to explain what we do here, the majority of eyes glaze over.
You should see them when I try to explain what my avatar does in the virtual world of Second Life, never mind being an Agent going on Missions and Quests in Evoke. It's been a struggle to get my generation (60's) to try and keep up. They keep thinking I'm just playing silly games.
I was lucky with Evoke, my friend in Second Life was excited about it and I signed up right away when I heard this was a new way of learning, connecting and collaborating for the social good.
I believe we must stay current with technology if we are to reach the next generation, so it makes sense for me to be an Agent here once I realized we don't have to chase anyone. I didn't know there was going to be homework, I feel like I just took four courses for 10 weeks.
I learned so much about social innovation both from local and global perspectives. Most importantly, I learned more about my self; what inspires me, gets my creative juices going, motivates me to take action. To LEARN, to ACT, to VISION. That's what I've been doing here. I got sparked by Evoke. Go figure, at my age, I really am a gamer. That's exactly what the treasure was.
I was asked to identify my hero and from that I ended up walking beside her in my first ever protest march.
UPDATE: 20100512: I gave this a lot of thought, and it just keeps happening that the more I read the more I am dismayed we let this get so out of hand. And I'm reading both sides. The Salmon sellers say no probs, the companies say no probs, but the young salmon (smolts) are dying or disappearing so their silent voice says it all to me. Did you know they DYE the farmed salmon PINK so you'll think it's tasty??? Did you know they ship smaller fish from Chili to feed their fish here (besides the wild ones here that seem to end up somehow in their net cages)? That's 1000 miles away to truck fish here from there. Does Chili get paid enough to have their resources shipped off I wonder?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The GET OUT OF OUR WATERS march led by Alexandra Morton and accompanied by many First Nations reached Victoria on March 8 as planned.

Heres where you're going to sign the petition: http://www.salmonaresacred.org/

Here's where you write your email saying in your words that open-net fish farms must get out of our waters or else I'm not going to vote for you. premier@gov.bc.ca Honourable Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia

And you're going to write our Prime Minister, pm@pm.gc.ca

Here's why you're going to want to write those letters in my opinion:

I marched with my hero, Alexandra Morton. It was exhilarating to feel the strength of thousands of us along with her, all with a common belief, walking peacefully with purpose towards our provincial government buildings. A noticable representation of First Nations bands, there to show their support.

While Alexandra was a long way back from the front line of the march, she was our leader, our inspiration, our hope. She is a Hero's Hero who never gave up fighting for what she believes in and finally, after 20 years of beating her head against the governments door, she isn't alone anymore.

You may wonder what the big deal is about a bunch of fish but it's much more that what meets the eye going on in our waters. It's not just about the salmon, it's about the life they support that will be gone when the salmon are gone, it's about the ocean being tainted by drugs and barren ocean floors, it's the increasing lice, and the mixing of species by thousands of escaped Atlantic salmon brought in to grow here mixing with Pacific salmon. Brought to you by a Norwegian company.

If I'm to understand what I've read and heard at the protest, it's about our government making rules as they go along, only to break them, blatantly giving all Canadians the third finger by designating restricted red zones in migration routes then allowing Norwegian open-net fish farms to propagate and prosper, nicely out of sight where we can't see it, tucked way up north out of sight out of mind. What else is out of sight I ask myself.

It's about Norway spoiling their waters then taking over the water in other countries includng ours. Not improving their process, not making it better, just simply moving to another country and giving the fish more drugs.

This must be what it feels like to be a third world country where foreign countries raid the kitchen of another. Canadians wake up!

Our government tried to slide in a Norwegian fish farm expansion in our waters that would make it the biggest in Canada, because they did an Environmental Assessment that said no impact to our environment. On closer look, seems government studied the site for 10 MONTHS and didn't take into account the expansion data. That's like adding a top floor of an apartment building and not knowing the weight. Who are these people we elected?

There was a complete failure of salmon run in the Fraser River area last year so government shut down fish farms in their migration round and put a hold on any more fish farm licenses until they could study it. Good, let's hope they get their facts right this time. It could be a coincidence the next year when the fish farms started back up, the smolts came back. BUT, now here's where I start to wonder... the Norwegian farm expansion was granted the license to proceed 2 DAYS before the hold, with, as the environmentalists said all along, insufficient data used as proof to proceed. Something is very very fishy about that one! Are you getting the picture I got when I started reading and learning more about why Alexandra was walking down Vancouver Island?

It gets worse. When an environmental group protested the assessment citing the data was wrong, the government tried to blow them off, the company quite smug about going ahead with expanding. It was only when the environmental group got lawyers involved and threatened a lawsuit that government backed off, and withdrew the approval.... for now. They do normally back out so gracefully. Read that again. If there hadn't been a concerned group of citizens who took action Canada would have allowed a major expansion and not understood what the environmental impact is. Or perhaps they did know but money talks? You just imagine the push to get that expansion through before the hold on licenses was announced. What backdoor promises were made on that one I wonder?

Is this what our country has come to? We have to rely on people who care enough about a bunch of fish to do something to save our pristine waters and our environment? All this and British Columbia/Canada doesn't even get paid their share given the majority of the profit goes to the foreign shareholders of a foreign country and not in taxes or wages. Yes, their company does employ people but there are more jobs going to be lost when we lose our fish, that's not even talking about the health issue.

Would you want to eat a fish that's been pumped full of drugs from the day it was born to get rid of lice, and there's a chance it's not working? Does that mean they just up the dose? What do they even feed those fish anyways I think I read that fish food isn't regulated. And where does their fish food come from?

Someone at the march told the Norwegians are turning on bright lights on the waters by their farms, which attracts other fish that the salmon eat. Using lights to fish is illegal here but who is every going to know way up north in the wilds. And, to top it all off, a lot (50% was mentioned by one of the speakers today) of these farmed fish are sold in the USA. Do they know what they're eating I wonder?

So, you getting the same picture I did? A foreign country ruins my country to grow food to feed a different foreign country. Tell me again why we should allow the Norwegian fish farms to continue? At the very least can't we ask them to leave the Red Zones and get out of the migration routes? What if that's all it was that could help, at least until they can put them on land.

Our government didn't listen to the First Nations who for eons have been telling government there's a problem, they didn't listen to Alexandra, and they haven't listened to the environmental scientists and experts for 20 years when they tried to do something about the open-net fish farms. This isn't just about fish.

Our government work for us, we are the boss here. We elected them on the good faith they would bring prosperity and honour to our country. That's not happening in this case, we my friends IMHO are being taken for a ride and most of us didn't even know it.

I saw the hope in Alexandra's eyes yesterday when she said seeing the support today she believes we are going to save the salmon. I think she's right. We may be polite but we're are not the fools. You're not a fool are you.

We're not talking about Global Warming here, too big for even our country to solve alone, we're talking about something that can be done. Norway kindly take your fish farms out of our waters. Get out of our waters. Get out of the way of our migrating fish.

What can you do?

Vote on the petition at http://www.salmonaresacred.org Write your politician. Pretty simple, and way more easier than walking down Vancouver Island. Imagine the great Canadian and British Columbia governments brought down but a little bunch of lousy lice they thought nobody would see. Imagine the generations to come who will suffer for your indifference if you at least don't educate yourself on the whole picture. Read both sides for sure, fish farming was a great idea at the time but it's time for the industry to change.

Imagine your own health when you take a bite out of that farmed salmon knowing it spent it's life on drugs. Only buy wild salmon, that is if there's any left to sell in the next few years. The lice pick on the young salmon migrating right by the fish farms and kill them, the salmon that grow up are fine..for now.

A list of politicians address are being put together but I say we just go to the top and write our Premier. In fact, I'm sure our Prime Minister would like to know what's going on too. pm@pm.gc.ca premier@gov.bc.ca Two little emails and you can save a bunch of fish... and ourselves.

I imagine the politicians are just hoping this will all go away. Something is going on and I don't even fish.

We must understand the problem right down to the nitty details; too often a problem is discovered and the solution races to mind.

Sometimes the problem isn't the problem, it's someone's solution to fix a problem. Read that twice.

A classic example is sending lovely equipment only to have it torn apart by the locals to make something they can use or leave to rot. The equipment didn't solve a problem, it became one because it didn't resolve the initial intention. Yes one would argue that at least the locals gained something they could use but it's about the intention to solve a problem which failed.

We need to learn from our mistakes and share our failures, identify and learn the lessons from efforts gone right and wrong so when someone wants to send equipment to solve a problem they first learn from another's experience and add theirs to the collective.

That's the difference a site like this can make for when we are connected, we are one voice of many causes for the goodness in life for all.

I packed just the right things, the bus ride down was so much fun (we sang even!) and to march with my hero is a moment I'll never forget. I'm sure I wouldn't have spent the time I did to research what Alexandra was up to, read more on both sides of the story until I could form my own opinion, and it didn't take long for things to just not add up about the open-net fish farming going on in my waters around the corner from my beautiful island. Alexandra is off to Norway next week to again ask the Norwegian organization who own over 90% of the fish farms here to kindly get out of our waters (and on to land at the very least). I'll be following her blog, her facebook and any news I can get about what's happening. I've written emails to politicians, our paper and posted blogs. My eyes have been opened wide and I have playing this 'game' to thank for motivating me to take action, march, and stand up for change. It feels good and scary at the same time but it is my destiny, according to Alchemy. I look forward to my journey ahead.

After following Alexandra Morton, my hero who I've been shadowing lately as part of Act1 exercise to find a mentor, I found the more I learned about what she was doing about the issues faced with wildlife and water quality due to the abundance of open-net fish farms being allowed on salmon migration routes, and the way they pump the salmon with drugs to kill off the lice. The more I understand now why she is so passionate about doing something to get the fish farms out of our waters and on to land.

There's a growing concern the lice from the fish farms are increasing in our waters and killing off the young wild salmon. Of course the industry says there's no problem, but why then did the largest company from Norway prohibit fish farming in two of their areas popular for recreational fishing when they also have a lice problem and their fish are dwindling?

Why did our government allow foreign companies to set up their farms in areas they themselves designated as out of bounds (Red Zones)?

Why did our government study the data for a proposed Norwegian fish farm expansion (making it the largest in British Columbia) for 10 months only to back down on the approval when threatened with a lawsuit from an environmental group? Turns out they didn't include the projection numbers for the expansion in their assessment, and were actually going to approve it 2 days before they put a hold on all fish farm license applications. That's like adding a floor on an apartment building and not taking into account the weight of it. I know my government and somebody pushed that approval through to get it in before the deadline I just know it.

For my action, I have blogged and tweeted and written letters. I have participated in the gathering when Alexandra visited my island including listening to her presentation at the community hall. I marched along side her during her final walk to the Parliament Buildings in Victoria with the busload from here who drove for 3.5 hours one way just to be there.

Our waters here are not being safeguarded as well as they can be, Alexandra knows it and so do I now. I will continue to do what I can from my little island in the wilds to get the fish farms out of our wild salmon migration routes and out of our waters and out of our country. To feed the Atlantic fish they bring in to grow, they're robbing our water of the smaller fish. Norway, go find some other country to suck on. Careful Chili, Scotland and Ireland watch you don't get taken over by the lice.

http://www.salmonaresacred.org - sign the petition or your country could be next.
ACT10 Smile, Smile A Whiletag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-05-10:4871302:BlogPost:1397632010-05-10T02:00:00.000ZBuffy Bhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/BuffyB

'How To FAQ' for navigating a profile, a step-by-step quickie video to marking evidence, editing etc. It was confusing for me at first when photos and videos didn't show up right away and I had to go back later to mark them.

'Best Practices FAQ' (i.e. prefixing your Evidence title with ACT1) to standardize posts (it's a big help when going back to update).

Spellcheck would be nice.

Why would you come back for a second season?

I had no idea I could become so passionate about the things I learned - sparked me! Imagine at my age going on my first protest march I missed the boat there but I'm on it now.

I want to continue be part of this new method of learning through games and social media, knowing how well it worked for me this first season. I'm a believer!

I connected with many like-minded people from all over the world, was able to build somewhat of a trusting relationship with them despite never having met because it was obvious we thought alike and have the same passion for change in the world.

I learned many things, not just from the game but from the shared learning experience. What a good idea to vote on other Evidence.

I love that you promoted mentorship!

I enjoyed the challenges and the structure for learning with the Learn Act Vision breakdown.

I liked that I had a choice of blog, photo or video for Evidence.

I felt good when I completed a mission; it made me happy to see those little runes glow bright. I didn't know I would care about the runes when I started or that they would be a motivator for me to get going on my homework. Gave a clear visual status.

I liked the Leader board and that you included new and emerging AGENTS.

Inspired me to dream ponder and create.

What more would you want from the experience?

New Evidence posts according to time zones. I'm sure I missed many because they weren't in the Evidence listing when the sun was down where I live.

Promote collaboration with Team exercises with people I haven't met i.e. auto-select 5 people with an easy mission to start, pick from the different lists (new, beginners, finished). Team members would at least have the first three mission runes to earn a leader spot. Then in a few weeks teams combine, so 10 people, until by the end there are 30 people in a team. Would be an interesting study. I wonder if that would discourage people from making new friends? Maybe this could be an activity for the game veterans until the new users get what we're doing here?

What would make this great adventure even better for Season 2?

Alchemy and his team return.

This small island where I live is vulnerable to disaster, not only do we get some nasty winter storms knocking out power for days, with all the trees and forested areas here a forest fire in the dry season could quickly get out of hand.

We have an emergency response team with RCMP and volunteer firefighters, and have formed a Disaster Relief team who have organized emergency shelter plans at places with generators (resorts and Community Centre). We have a 'buddy' system where neighbourhoods are divided into groups with a captain for walk-about checks. These are the people who would need Ushahidi connections so they can report in, as well as an alternate way (phone, in person, messengers) as a problem here is that not all of the island has cel phone coverage.

DATA REQUIREMENTS

The data captains need: residents information - name, address, phone; the escape route; designated emergency shelter location; tide chart and current emergency condition.

The data captains would provide: confirmation the resident has been evacuated; route; emergency shelter location; pets (to account for pet food supplies); farm animal status (resident would need extra help to assist with relocation).

The data needed to be tracked: captain contact information; current emergency condition; projected emergency condition; number of people on the island (ferry counts); number of residents per shelter; information of additional assistance required to evacuate farm animals; weather conditions; tide chart; location of other island ferries and time to reach our island and boat owners/passenger capacity/dock location in case of island-wide evacuation.

When I moved here, I was given a welcome package with good information about the island, but it was only later I learned where my designated shelter is so a follow-up for me is to find out how current their information is, and if Ushahidi is something they need to know about.

I've definitely learned something from this Mission!

UPDATE: 20100503 I continue to think about this and it sparked the idea that to my knowledge there isn't a way to notify everyone quickly in the event of an emergency. I am going to try and change that because I have been given a gift of knowledge by playing this Urgent Evoke game and it's my responsibility to do something with it now. I love when that happens.
ACT7 Resilience Realitytag:www.urgentevoke.com,2010-05-04:4871302:BlogPost:993082010-05-04T18:43:48.000ZBuffy Bhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/BuffyB

Today I was notified that I won their Grand Prize for my entry, I am just so excited as I had entered a similar contest for TechSoup Global in their Digital StoryTelling Challenge, this one trying to explain what Bridges do in 5 photographs and won Honourable Mention from over 100 entries all over the world.

It is so validating for me that I am creative, and in both cases I am spreading awareness about the gutsy little nonprofit where I volunteer for with a passion so it's a win-win for me. I love when that happens :)

We have a ferry that runs every hour but not before 6AM or after 10PM. There are emergency service plans to manage after-hour emergencies but it takes time to get the crew in place and the ferry is slower. Besides, both ferry captains are infected. Sometimes they use a water taxi company but they wouldn't have enough boats to handle everyone.

We have an active boating/fishing community who know the waters well and many have their own dock so can be ready to move much quicker. These are the people I will call upon. They know when I invoke the 'Calling All Boaters' signal from the emergency broadcast devices what to do, and hearing this signal, the community understands they are on stand-by.

I have confirmed this situation requires the Boaters, engage our Ushahidi site and invoke their emergency signal.

The flood of requests on the web to the government and health authorities renders their web site useless. I engage my "Dark Site" and redirect traffic.

In this outbreak, time is everything, we need to get the newly infected people over to the other side in a hurry so they can be properly quarantined and we need to bring in health/support staff from the mainland so they can assess the situation, they're waiting on the other side.

The boaters will report in to our Ushahidi site and confirm passenger names so we know who is safely off the island when we do the head count.

The Health Authorities have determined we need to evacuate the island, this is the breeding ground for the virus since the sea-lice from open-net fish farms were infected and it went airborne. It could also be spreading to the nearby outer-islands.

The larger fishing boat operators check the Ushahidi site and have been on stand-by since this morning when I posted the heath authorities warned me an emergency evacuation will likely be necessary. I've had another ferry captain brought in, but the ferry can't handle everyone at once and it would take too long going back and forth.

I invoke the Emergency Evacuation signal, the community have prepared and know what they are bringing and where to report. Resorts, Hotels and B+Bs report in their projected guest numbers are higher than projected so I invoke the signal on the mainland that we need additional Boaters to come across. They check our Ushahidi site to determine what pick-up dock to go to and who is already on the way. Good, I confirm enough have responded to handle the passenger numbers and put up the message for the rest to please remain on stand-by.

The Emergency signal has also been triggered on the smaller islands including Cortez which depends on the ferry from Quadra to get to the mainland. They invoke their own signal to alert their community, while no cases have been reported there it could be some have not come to light yet given the incubation period of the virus. They start preparing their communities for possible evacuation and Cortez ferry switches the route to go directly to the mainland.

I'm so glad we've avoided panic setting in for the evacuation because we have practiced the call-out and every resident knows the plan and what to do. We only had a year to prepare for this but we used the time wisely and it is now paying off.

One month later we have been given the all-clear to return, everyone knows their designated ferry time because we've posted it on our Dark Site. They'd just as soon not wait forever in a line-up anyway so everyone checks for their departure time according to our districts. Priority loading has been given to the business owners so they can get ready for us locals to come back home.

Everyone was so excited about the news on the TV that night, we managed our emergency outbreak so smoothly it put our little island way out in the wilds right on the map.

I've booked the community hall for the first meeting to discuss what we did right, what we did wrong, what we can do better and who should be on the team to implement the improvements while it's fresh on everyone's mind.

It's going to be a pot-luck dinner, we have the best ones here, and our local bands want to play so for sure we'll be celebrating our success as a cracker-jack prepared community right after we take care of business.

Our "Dark Site" and Ushahidi sites get a rest until we implement the changes we learned to make the next time even better.

Other remote island communities around the world are contacting me to find out how they can implement their emergency evacuation plan so I've decided to host a mixed-reality event here on the island with a sliding-scale entrance fee and home-stay sharing for those who can't afford to pay for a room, as well as a virtual location for those who are unable to come so it's not necessary to be here in person to participate. The Real Life audience and the Virtual audience will be able to see and hear each other, break out into workgroups and give their presentations. That's the cool part of a mixed reality event.

This was a hard mission, I'll admit, but worth it. I thought long and hard about this one and spent ages looking up articles and trying to find a good fit. Then I realized, my recent volunteer time with the Akha Hilltribe in northern Thailand gave me first-hand experience about ancient ways, as the family I stayed with still gather lunch from the jungle and cook on an open fire.

When it was time for me to leave, I was guest of honour in a ceremony meal prepared just for me, and presented with a gift of their traditional bag. This bag is much more than just pretty, it has significance in every stitch, in every decoration. It tells a story, their story.

It was explained to me that the coins are real, brought with them when the Akha people fled from Burma (long before it was re-named Myanma) but worthless in Thailand. How sad I thought at the time, as the money was likely hard to come by. What a struggle it must have been for them to earn the coins only to have them end up as decorations.

Then I realized, while they would be considered poor, they do have a small farm with a few cattle, lots of chickens and a few wild pigs with a lot of little piglets running around. They have two rice paddys and a fair sized garden, and all the wild jungle food they could want. They don't go hungry. Money, while still a necessity, is not as important to them for survival.

That is the secret I want to pass on. Indigenous people got along without money for centuries and money isn't everything, but tradition is.

I didn't make this bag, but I did make the effort to find a place to volunteer and earned it. Inside the bag I have put coins from my country, Canada as well as from the United States to show we share a border and are good neighbours, and a feather from a dove for good luck.

If anything, they can use the coins as decorations.

Finally, to keep my bag safe so it can be passed around, I've put it in a plastic milk jug because we know plastic can last a very very long time and this one will be put to good use.

We have an on-line training program which had to be temporarily shelved due to the cutbacks which is a crying shame. With our English, French and First Nations content we have the potential for unlimited out-reach beyond our border. We will also share our knowledge and expertise with any group wanting to start their own Bridges program. Our program is successful because it empowers women to start a new life and it works.

From this exercise, I've learned something new ~ that an outbreak can start in one country and not another country at the same time because it is in a different season (Spring one place, Winter another) and that it is imperative other countries about to enter the same season know what's happening.

I also realized that there isn't a universal tag that I'm aware of for reporting emergencies.

Scientists need to know, Health Authorities need to know, Emergency Responders need to know and Governments need to know in all countries but there doesn't seem to be a formalized way, currently news feeds are monitored for keywords, but what if there was a universal tag code, wouldn't that make it easier?

Reuters use a 'boilerplate' for their reporters to report in an emergency why don't citizens?

The tag could be something like:

9er0100 is 9TSCCCC means Emergency Type Severity CountryCode

E = universal symbol for emergency

T = E for earthquake, O for outbreak, etc

S = R (Red) High, Y (Yellow) OnWatch, G (Green) All Clear

C = Numeric number for each country
