A crash course in changing the world.
The most likely natural disaster is a hurricane. Hurricanes provide many different stages of chaos. Ushahidi would be helpful in my part of the world because it could alert people of potential harm as the storm moves across the state. Play by play on Natural disasters would be helpful to get relief workers to the worst part the storm hit. The streaming in of information from people actually surviving the conditions of the storm would revolutionize the way relief is given. We would collect…

The WomenWatch led me to an article about Bangladesh women fighting for equal rights. It has been at the forefront of the movement even for a under-developed country. Bangladesh has the eight lowest gender gap in politics. I had no idea that Bangladesh is working so hard to decrease the the gender gap. It has had a female head of state for longer than any other country in the world. The number of women in parliament has increased by 10% in twenty years. This political change has grown to…

As I learned about the problems of money across the globe, I felt Mahila Milan could be the next innovation across the globe for credit. Mahila Milan is a credit scheme focussed on the women in poverty in Mumbai in India. It was created in the 1980s to work against the government rule that said government could destroy the shacks on the sides of the road. At first it was an organization to work against the government, but it turned into a way for the "pavement dwellers" to work with the…

I am participating in the How Low Can You Go? Sorority Water Challenge. This is a UF program that challenges UF Panhellenic Community to reduce water usage from February to March. Water is measured weekly and the house with the greatest percent reduction is given 100 points, second place gets 50 points, and 25 points goes to the third place sorority. The sorority with the most total points will receive a $500 donation to the charity of their choice. It is organized by Alachua County…

To act on the problem of food security, I watched A Place at the Table. It showed me the problems of food insecurity in America. It is a 2012 doc**entary that highlighted that 50 million Americans were food insecure. This large figure include children, working people, and college students. 1 in every 2 children need some kind of federal food assistance. Even in Gainesville, the public schools fund at least 80% of the students' lunches either partially or all of it. The doc**entary…

I learned that global warming is changing the production of food. The extreme temperatures can have an effect on the amount of food farmers can produce. By 2100, there could be food shortages because of the change in global climate. It could seriously alter food crops in the tropics and subtropics in the coming years. Inventors should start to develop ways for crops that can withstand harsher hot temperatures. This can lead to greater food insecurity in some of the poorest part of the world…

Social innovation can come from anywhere. People can learn about it from many resources today since the internet has taken hold of our society. Social media can inform people about innovation through twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and many other blogs and websites. Today there was an article released February 18th, 2014 talking about a Social Innovation Forum tomorrow in Istanbul. This forum brings together local and global businesses to talk about global and urban change. The main innovation…

My favorite part of Exhibit A is "think like a child – children have no limit to their thinking." I feel that people need to channel their inner child to create fun innovation for world change. People, definitely including me, need to step away from being so serious and have fun with life. Social change can be brought about from any person. All people including children have the means to create change and innovation by simply thinking out of the box. Thinking like a child can help people…

For this assignment, I decided to trade my roommate a cup of coffee from Starbucks in exchange for an IOU for her to drive me to my car which is parked very far from my apartment. It was a system of bartering that I feel like can be used on a much wider scale in the future for simple everyday purchases.

I believe on of the biggest changes for currency in the future will be the establishment of an international currency, as well as, a move towards completely virtual currency. I believe that having an international or virtual currency would change the world because this would open up trade between many different nations.

For World Water Day 2020, I would run a contest that every university and college could participate in their respective states. Whichever college/university in each state that lowers their percentage of water consumption the most would receive local news interviews and a small prize. The winners of each state would then be compared. The overall national winner would then receive a large prize such a concern by a popular musician or a research grant.

There are more than 60 Water For People Committees throughout North America support Water For People's mission through community outreach, advocacy, and fundraising. These volunteer groups are subgroups of their parent organizations, including American Water Works Association Sections and Water Environment Federation Member Associations. I would further their water security efforts by increasing involvement and recognition in my local area through posting flyers and creating a social media…

It is Halloween 2020. The haunted houses and pop-up monster have been powered through solar and wind systems. The solar and wind power will create sufficient energy to scare plenty of children.

I like to read a book before bed every night and I use a lamp on my nightstand for light. My invention would allow me to read at night with sustainable energy. Living in a college town, many people bike to and from class. This invention would create energy by harnessing the energy created by pedaling your bike. It would charge a battery cell that could then be inserted into various objects such as lamps. A days worth of pedaling to class could then fuel my lamp to read at night.

Jane Chen’s company, Embrace, manufactures a sleeping bag-like device called the “Thermpod,” which warms low-birth weight babies in hospitals and clinics that have unreliable electricity and heat lamps that don’t always work. This creative invention provides an inexpensive green source of warmth for countries that have unreliable power sources.

In March 2020, I hope to be in my own apartment or home eating a meal with my husband. I will have purchase our food from the local supermarket's organic section or from a local farmers market. My husband and I will have worked together to cook the meal. I am good at preparing vegetables and other sides whereas, my husband will be in charge of the protein component of the meal. It would be a grilled fish taco on a gluten-free corn tortilla and fresh vegetables. It will be delicious.

I have personally increased food security for someone in my life by cooking a well-balanced dinner for my roommates when they would have ordered fast food otherwise. Also, the sorority that I am a member of often donates to local canned food drives. I donate non-perishable items such as canned vegetables and healthy soups whenever I can. I strive not only to donate to those in need but to also donate healthy food.
