After the massive earthquake in Haiti, one of my aunts sent a package via the local post to one of her friends there whose farm was destroyed. It contained packaged seeds for several fruits and vegetables so that her friend could start over. There's always some sort of hope when it comes to food because it's ground zero for life. Everything needs to consume something to survive, that's the basic principle.
Where I stay though, we have so much food that our time of leasure revolves…

The minimum amount of water required to meet basic needs vary depending upon what is included as "basic needs". The figures vary from 20 to 50 litres per person per day. The average distance a person in rural Africa must walk to a water source is 5 miles, a burden borne mainly by women…

LEARN1: "Innovation (often) comes from constraint (If you’ve got very few
resources, you’re forced to be very creative in using and reusing them.)"
In our world resources are limited. This is why we have economy and different economic systems/structures. Economy is based on the idea of scarcity of resources, opposed to the unlimited human wants. Thus, different economic systems…

I HAVE A RIGHT TO BE HAPPY AND TO BE TREATED WITH CARE AND UNDERSTANDING.
This means: I should be able to express my ideas and that no one should laugh at me or hurt my feelings.
I HAVE A RIGHT TO BE RESPECTED AS A PERSON.
This means: I should be treated fairly even though my skin color may be different or though I am fat or thin, tall or short, or a girl or boy.
I HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE SAFE.
This means: No person should hit, kick, push, or pinch me, or try to…

I'm not into hero worshipping or shadowing, but when I come across inspiring people, I do occasionally remind myself to check back later and be inspired by their progress in their fields. One person I think has been inspirational is Michael Pritchard who invented a cheap, effective water filtering device for water purification in developing countries and founded www.lifesaversystems.com.
It's just great to see people who use their…

I plan to organize a large-scale demonstration on the urgency and consequences of this water crisis to evoke awareness and actions! Along with the demonstration, there will be a world-wide campaign led by the Blue Man Group, with the theme being “B.M.W. – Blue Means Water!”
A very interesting and well-made video by our lovely Blue Men:

Provide skills, not just finished technologies. The current revolution in design for developing countries is the notion of co-creation, of teaching the skills necessary to create the solution,
rather than simply providing the solution. By involving the community throughout the design process, you can help equip people to innovate and contribute to the evolution of the product. Furthermore, they acquire the skills needed to create solutions to a…

I've noticed that a lot of people are sending mails to everyone on their friends lists simply to notify them that they've written a new blog post. It's quite annoying, but in a way I can see why people see this is necessary to spread the information in a blog post they've written.
E-mail notification seems a bit too messy to me, when you have a large number of friends. I've just checked my e-mail account and there are 287 mails in there from the last two days. I know you can switch…

My favorite secret comes from this African proverb: Educate a male and you educate an individual. Educate a
female and you educate a community. An Education with a focus on critical thinking and ethics is the key to social innovation that focuses on the greater good along with a variety of institutional reforms that focus on
human rights. If one looks at countries with It always baffles that men seem to take life…

“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would
only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination,
no more plants, no more animals, no more man.”
This quote has been accredited to Albert Einstein. This is probably
untrue.
What is true, however, is that honey bees are
vanishing every year, and this…

During the twin tragedies of the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, Ipswich water-treatment expert Michael Pritchard winced helplessly at televised coverage of throngs of refugees waiting for days for a simple drink of clean water. Stricken by the chronic failure of aid agencies to surmount this basic challenge, Pritchard decided to do something about it.
Using a non-chemical nano-filtration hollow fiber membrane with 15 nanometer pores (it is designed to block viruses), the…

LEARN1: "Listen to the right people. Okay, so you probably don’t know what it’s like to carry fifty pounds of firewood on your head. Well, don’t pretend that you do."
It's better that you learn out of experience instead of assuming
responsibility in your own little imaginary world. Go out, see the
problems faced by people, act upon them and fight for what's right. I
have personally experienced this learning by working with…

Im an not a very practical guy. Thinking instead of doing, reacting instead of acting, negotiating instead of proclaiming. Most of the time I stay at the theoretical side of issues and research that. That is why I am mostly attracted to the tip of firstly understanding what is at hand before you start to act.
Most of the time, when you have to deal with problems, fierce debates and misunderstandings, it turns out to be that people are not exactly talking about the same things,…

Considering within the Maryland limits, it is doubtful that there are any farmlands that I can be of aid to, and I am also quite new to this area, so I probably couldn't make a club, there is not much one in my state could do.
However, something I could do, if even a small task, would be to go around my cousin's neighborhood, or my grandparents old folks home, and put up fliers. On these fliers could be a simple yet eye catching picture of a food deprived person of any racial stature. I…

It's a very interesting proposition that could cut cost of transportation of food to urban environments, and enable a degree of self-sufficiency to cities. I hope it will be tasty. ;)
