Innovation (often) comes from constraint (If you’ve got very few
resources, you’re forced to be very creative in using and reusing them.)

2082 Computing History

Its 2082 and I am now more than 100 years on this planet. When I was young, I never thought I would reach that age. But here I am.

Back then, nearer to the beginning of the century, we were expecting the glorious revolution of information as the internet more and more grew into our primary means of communication. So little did we know about what was yet to come.

With time, commonly used new technologies move from being an innovation to being…

A game to model a crisis

Computer simulations try to model real-life situations in the most accurate way possible, taking into consideration inputs and processing them into outputs. Examples include flight simulators and games. I would like to point out how good the game PANDEMIC 2 is at modelling a world wide pandemic crisis.
Here is the direct link, have a play for yourselves:…

Unexpected health heroes

Year after year of heroic (and let's face it, very often American) movies have taught us that in the face of adversity, there'll always be a lone hero to save the day/the country/the president/the world. Of course as exciting as it feels to watch it happen, it's only a movie : until the early 21st century, it was hard to get actual data on how people - you, me, everybody - would react in the case of a pandemic : information that would prove invaluable to scientists and health professionals all… Continue

Learn 7 Ushahidi Project and what it is and Disasters most likely to happen in my area.

The Ushahidi project is a platform which allows users to report important information by utilizing their smartphones. They can use video, pictures or text message to report the problems that are occuring in realtime. Ushahidi uses a filter so that they can plow through all the messages and find out what is really going on instead of having to go through the massive amounts of data that is transmitted on Ushahidi.

ACT6 Bridges for Women Society Volunteer

I volunteer as a member of the Board of Directors for Bridges for Women, a gutsty little non-profit that for more than 20 years has trained women who have been abused with life-skills, financial and employability skills. I make a difference every day by being involved. It's amazing we've survived given the funding cuts but we continue to make a difference in the lives of many.

We have an on-line training program which had to be temporarily shelved due to the cutbacks which…

Montanai! WASTE NOT!

In order to increase the food security of someone within my community, i have decided to follow the Japenese philosophy of "MONTANAI" meaning "do not waste". If we all ensure that we consume only what we need then there will be enough to go round for everybody!

Amana Vijana Centre and Sanda High School - 10 years down the road

So what happened with the girls that took part in our exchange programs?
For those of you who are lost all ready I recommend my previous post "Amana Vijana Center and Sanda High School"
You've read it?
Ok, let's continue.

The exchanges took place in 2003 and 2005, 5 and 7 years ago today. Much has passed since and I have shifted on "a year or two here, a year or two there" basis between Tanzania and Sweden. The girls, all at the time of the…

Arizona, profiling and the little racist Governor that could.

I have a rant to share, and it has to do with Arizona's bill SB1070, which was signed into law a couple of days ago. But before I get into it, allow me to begin with a bit of history and why this bill is so personal to me.

I am a Mexican and I am engaged to be married to a wonderful, intelligent, loving and smoking hot woman. The twist? She is an American. Now, other than one time and for no more than a couple hours when I was two years old, I have never set foot on the…

Imagine8 2077

2077

It´s 2077, I´m 100 years old. So many faces and places. So many lives I lived in 100 years. Earth has changed so much . . . But more importantly we adapted, we evolved.

This change I'm talking about is as significant as the change that occurred in the Universe when the first group of atoms became something else than just individual atoms. When cells became something more than

cells.

This change I'm talking about was as… Continue

PYRAMID STRUCTURES R GOOD 4 U

Back at the beginning of the 21st century, people were still cursing and cursing at pyramid schemes and Ponzi-like scams as they rampaged through the bank accounts of unsuspecting people who didn't know better. Who'd have thought a few decades later we'd use the principles they were based on to help stop the Blue Flu of 2020 ?

Bookheads all over the world had started experimenting with information and best practices distribution networks by late 2010 after companies, ideological groups… Continue

Shadowing the original Thrillionaire

My chosen hero to shadow is former journalist and current philanthropist Ruth Ann Harnisch. This is cheating just a little, since I worked with her on a few writing projects a couple of years ago and already have her on my Facebook, so she's not a stranger. But to be honest, I haven't kept in touch with her much since then. You know how it is, life gets busy and we let it get in the way with the things we want to be doing, like keeping up with friends.

Ruth Ann is an awesome woman who… Continue

Dinner at my house

It's April 30, 2020 and I'm cooking at the community dinner that is put on each week in my apartment building. Each apartment building in the city hosts a dinner once a week ( on different days) and posts an invitation on the electronic boards located at each major interesection of the city. People sign up for a dinner location and receive a ticket that entitles them to attend the dinner. It is a social event that encourages people to get out, and meet and support each other. It's also a… Continue

Scenario: Large scale industrial accident

Right now I am living in Ludwigshafen, Germany. I think this is a reasonably safe place to live and there isn't anything obviously live-threatening going on.

The only thing I can think of right now would be large scale industrial accidents. There is a nuclear power plant in 30km distance (in Biblis) and the city hosts BASF, the worlds largest chemical company.

As I just found out from wikipedia,…

More just food

I joined, Just Food, a local organization working toward food insecurity in my city. I have put my name down as a volunteer for the community garden where I will be helping to grow fresh vegetables that will be provided to low-income families.

Just Food

I live in the capital city of Canada. Visitors to Ottawa often comment on the abundance of well-cared for public spaces and the well-organized public activities and events. For many people, it's a very nice place to raise a family. However, for 28 per cent of the population Ottawa is a place where, on daily basis you must choose between buying food for your family and paying your rent. A single mother on social assistance with two children will (after she pays her housing costs) have about $100… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
