World Water Day 2020

I would imagine that in 2020, some countries would be better off and worse off than before as far as their water supply. I think to celebrate, there would of course be awareness proograms along with a party and obstacle courses people would have to go through to get a bottle of water. It shows how uneasy it is for others to get water as well, and a challenge that each household is allotted a certain amount of water for a couple of days and see how well each region does. Also, through bottled… Continue

ACT4: Ateneo Innovation Center

Wow this is probably the fastest mission I will be able to do. I actually contacted the Ateneo Innovation Center already...I was trying to know more about their innovations for LEARN4. Here was my email to them:

Dear Mr. Cabacungan,

Good Day!

My name is Sid Cardenas and I'm currently playing Evoke (http://urgentevoke.com), a social impact game developed by Jane McGonigal and funded by the World Bank Institute. It is a game… Continue

Solving The Water Crisis

The first fresh groundwater replenishment system went into place in Orange County. This system transforms sewage and used water destined for the oceans into pure, drinkable water. The system has three steps, microfiltration, to remove bacteria and solids; reverse osmosis, to get rid of minerals; and an ultraviolet-light and hydrogen-peroxide treatment, to destroy any remaining organic compounds. This process can transform any waste into pure water.

LEARN4: Solar Water Distillation

Here is one method posted by Zack Scott on how to use the power of the sun to have drinkable water through simple evaporation and condensation.

Though it is important to note that it doesn't filter everything. Dense materials such as dirt will be removed for sure.

Here is another simple innovation being used in tanzania - using the sun's UV rays to kill the… Continue

New Power

A recent Idea of mine was create a portable rechargeable battery device. To charge the battery you would shake it. However, this already exists. My more unique idea was to create versions of common day items (that we shake) that are retrofitted with places to store the shakable battery devices. Some items that could be retrofitted could be a toothbrush or a tennis racket. Say hello, to tons of free energy.

KIVA - micro credit

I decided to donate 25US $ through the micro loan portal www.kiva.org. By their help I am
supporting a young person from Lebanon who is going to finance his university education by
the money from that micro credit.

For me these micro credits are a good way to support people in developing countries and to
ensure their businesses and education.

No money for the taxi driver ;) and other examples

At first I have to admit, that it wasn't just me who tried to use a new currency, but also my best friend.

We often go to partys, drink a lot and normally when we are trying to get home it is so late, that there is no bus or metro driving anymore so we have to get home by taxi. But the last time my friend wanted to get home, he hadn't had any money anymore. The problem was that when he realized that fact, the taxidriver had already driven him home and to be honest he was reeeeally angry… Continue

Me in 2020

I think in the year 2020, when I'll be 34 years old, I'll be doing exactly what I want to be doing. I can't imagine exactly what, where, and with whom I'll be, but in a vague sense I know what I would want. Having a committed relationship is a strong part for me in living a happy life, so I hope to have that. The details I don't yet know, because I know in 9 years I could easily be a different person. I want to have a career that allows me to live comfortably, but nothing spectacular - just a… Continue

Salinee Tavaranan, Director of Border Green Energy Team

I chose to shadow Salinee Tavaranan, the Director of Border Green Energy Team (BGET). From the website, "The Border Green Energy Team (BGET) has been working along the Thailand/Burma border since 2005 with the mission to implement renewable energy and sustainable technologies and also demonstrate how these technologies are integral and economically viable aspects of improving livelihoods." I feel strongly about using renewable energy and sustainable technologies all over the world, and I like… Continue

See and Do the Obvious

To become a part of social innovation, my favorite secret is to see and do the obvious. We hear about major issues of the world, and in our own local communities, and the first and most simplest thought of action is usually the best. It not only provides a feasible first step in solving the problem, but often times we tend to over-think the problem and the solution. I find myself in situations where the more I analyze something, the more complicated my reactions get, and I end up doing nothing.… Continue

Alternative currency

When I think about the future of money I am rather sure that we won't have any coined money in the future. I think that sometimes we will have just one currency all over the world and that worth of goods will be messured by some kind of numbers in the internet.

There are a lot of examples about online currencys. The ones I know best are the fictional currencys in games, where you can buy points with real money and then buy yourself skins or weapons for your character with these game points… Continue

Canadian to Englishmen!

Hi EVOKE friends!

Today I went to my local shopping center to a store called "Continental Currency Exchange" to exchange 5 Canadian dollars to Euros. The only drawback was the store did not carry coins, their smallest amount was 5 Euros, it was a good thing they had an interact machine! Nonetheless, I put away my five dollar bill and used my debit card to finalize the currency exchange. It cost me $7.33 CDN to receive 5 Euros. I then asked the employee how the rates were set. She… Continue

Do something good for the water crisis!!

Amanda Wills, she thinks that the best way to make a difference is by simply changing your mindset to help the water crisis. When I read her blog, I thought that I should do something close to me. I was wondering if I use less water more than before. How does my effort affect for the water crisis? It is a very small effect for the water crisis in the world. But if I keep doing it, also other people do effort like me, it is going to big affect in the world. So I decided to use less water when I… Continue

Power

I think that in todays world it is very hard for people to save engergy because of our life styles. People have long communtes to school and to work. Not everybody drive a Prius. But there are lots of ways to help sve gas and other earth materials. For transportation people carpool and take the bart.

Hunger

Today many people starve through out the world. We here in the USA do not understand what everybody is going through. It is a very tough time for a lot. There needs to be a way for more people to donate their time and effort.

LEARN 5

I think th

at money only can work when two requirements are fulfilled:

1. Money must have the same value for everybody

2. The value of money must be visible

The first point, I think, is achieved. Of course you can by nearly nothing for 1 € in Europe but you can do your wh*** buying for one week with 1 € in Africa. But over large areas the first point is fulfilled. And for the moment it isn’t very important for the poor Africans that they…

Kiva - Empower people around the world with a 25$ loan

I think the idea of micro credits is very good. In relation to the micro-credit, I found the website Kiva.org. The internet platform make it possible to give people in the third world a little credit. On kiva.org you can read what the credit is required for, in which period it shall be repaid and for example, how high is the chance that the… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
