LEARN9: Establishing Crisis Standards

I chose to highlight CDC Chief of Media Relations, Glen Nowak's input on Outbreak Communication

Challenge five: Experts and the public have different views.

The public and our medical experts have different ways of viewing the world and that can be a communications challenge. When we…

Act 8

In Oaxaca, Mexico natural medicine doctors have been fighting with official associations of physicians for many years now. Most of them were women and had a hard time doing their work because of strict rules and regulations on distributing natural remedies to the public. Many of these homeopathic doctors have been getting together lately to share their experiences and collaborate with one another on ways to start a business and made a life style with their hobby. With support from the National… Continue

My call for action

If a pandemic crisis would hit Germany i would try to get alot of engineers, biologists and scientists in general connected to each other. They could then provide ideas regarding filters for water and air or help in keeping a clear environment.

There also have to be some journalists, who provide the feedback to the public. There has to be a way to let people ask and get information by calling. In addition to that the massmedia has to keep trying to spread the true and real knowledge… Continue

Covering Risk

Let’s take the concept of risk and divide it in half: Let’s consider the technical side of risk—whether it’s likely to kill you, hurt you, or damage the ecosystem. Let’s call that “hazard.”

Let’s take the other half of risk—the culture half of risk rather than the scientific half—that is, whether it’s likely to upset you, anger you, or frighten you. Let’s call that “outrage.”

This makes the formula: risk = hazard + outrage.

When i read… Continue

Dinner in the year 2020

Imagine that there are several community gardens located within each city. These gardens were started by "Partners for Gardens in the year 2020" with the intent of communities desiring more gardens for the community to share from.

There would be at least, according to the size of the city, at least 7-8 per city, and all citizens are welcomed to use the garden. There would be caretakers to insure the gardens keep up to standard and continue to grow, and each person utilizing food from… Continue

Inciting Panic where no Panic Is

After reading the 5 secrets of crisis communication, I want to share my favorite insight: “Managing Panic in Pandemic“

Dori Reissman, the author of this section, says that the word “panic” is used too often in wrong context. Much journalists write or tell about panic without knowing what they wreak. Panic describes a status where social and internal order is lost. Everything is out of control. But mostly, it is not the case.

Journalists have to ask themselves if this is really…

IMAGINE8: World 2.0: 2088 - The Importance of "Real Socialization"

August 15, 2088

Quezon City, Philippines

I'm celebrating my 100th birthday today. No one came. None physically at least...except for my loving wife who is always at my side. A lot of friends greeted me in a social network, some left a message in my voicemail, while some left electronic gifts and cards.

I miss the old days...back in the 90s...before mobile phones, laptops, tablets. The more gadgets became mobile, the more socializing became electronic...like softcopies… Continue

Food Security for someone in my community

There are many senior citizens that live in my area. A program that assures senior receive nutriotious meals, who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, is called "Meals on Wheels." Seniors pay a small amount per month for hot meals either three times a week, or five days a week. They are delivered hot onspecified days to each senior. (The organization is always looking for more volunteers to deliver the meals).

Because seniors are typically low income, an idea would be to pay… Continue

Challenge to Food Security

There are a few efforts being forth in my local community.

One such effort is through the Richmond Rescue Mission, a nonprofit organization that feeds, clothes and shelters the homeless from a one night's stay, to possibly weeks or months -- depending on their cooperation to program rules. As this organization is nonprofit, it can only continue to run with the help of the donations that come in from private corporations -- those that have been committed for many years. This continues… Continue

Tokyo Food Crisis - Imagine

Tell a story about where you are, and what you're doing, when Alchemy calls YOU to help with the Tokyo food crisis.

Not being totally familiar with the Tokyo food crisis, I am with others. But the best thing for me to do is plan ahead so that PLANS will work.

A food crisis tells me that there is either a shortage of food in a particular area, that there is something wrong with that food that exists or that there is going to be an impending shortage of food for a… Continue

Mission No. 1

“Learn” Blog

1. What you have matters more than what you lack (If you’ve got a bicycle, consider what you can build based on that, rather than worrying about not having a car, a truck, a metal shop.)

What you have is yourself and for starters, you’re already off to a good start. That that you lack is what you can’t help. Along with what you have, being yourself, is your peace of mind.

Back in the day, transportation was not affordable as it may be today.… Continue

Hamilton Ontario's Resilience Plan

Before this mission I have never heard of the words "urban resilience", so once I typed in these words following my city I was very surprised as well as intrigued to see an article that read "Poverty is a serious problem in Hamilton". The Welcome Inn Community Center has two specific innovative ways to reduce poverty levels in Hamilton. One innovation is the bizPlan the other is,… Continue

My team to fight the pandemic flu

The pandemic flu is spread all over the world. There is no time to wait and the people wait for my decision.

I would take the following people to build a group that could make the change and start fighting the pandemic flu:

1. A team of the best doctors all over the world. Especially doctors with experience in pandemic flu. They would analyse the progress of the flu.

2. A team of the world leader politicians. They have the power… Continue

Energy Crisis by Jessica

The scientists estimated that all the oil in the world will xbex run out in the next fifty years. So right now, scientists from all over the world are trying to create a replacement energy that is as convenient as oil. As the amount of oil continues to run out, the price of it becomes higher xandhigherx. At the moment, wars are going off in the Middle East in fights for oil. The most well-known of them all is the Iraq War. Several years ago, the U.S. government invaded Iraq claiming that they… Continue

Learn 9 - Managing panic in a pandemic

I choose "Managing panic in a pandemic".

It think the meaning of the word panic is a big factor. The word is often used but most of the time there is no panic.

But what is a panic?

For The Nieman Guide panic means that it is a loss of social order and a internal order. In critical situations people often running around and doing what they believe is self-protective. So this might not be a social order but also not be a panic.

For me, everybody speaks… Continue

Who would YOU call on to make a heroic effort during a pandemic?

It’s the year 2011, and the next pandemic flu has just reached our school. I’ve already organized teachers, students and their parents to be ready for a pandemic flu. I told teachers to send students home if they are sick. The teachers have the students wash their hands often, and cover their mouth when they cough. The students could be aware of who is sick and try to stay away from them. I told their parents to take care of their kids, and if they are sick, don’t send them to school. Thus we… Continue

IMAGINE7: World 2.0 - Urban Resilient Communities (URCs)

The yellow house is where I live right now. We are surrounded by trees that were planted by my parents, grandparents, and other relatives. They were able to build a haven for us by helping one another.

On the other side of the road (represented by the yellow box) is a large area with informal settlers, living in low quality houses made of…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
