Last semester I went to the local food bank and helped them by loading canned foods. We went out as a group for mandatory community service and i want looking forward to it, but i found it to be rewarding.

I researched a food bank in Atlanta, GA called the Atlanta Community Food Bank and found it to be interesting. Their website says that over 27% of children in GA live in households without food security and almost 18 percent of the population lives in poverty. Im from GA and I didnt realize that there were that many people struggling to find food. The ACFB collects food and school supplies and distributes it to children in schools that are going hungry. 94% of the donations are used to buy…

I've decided to shadow Bill Gates and the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. I think it's incredible that they have taken their massive wealth gained in computer technology and used it as a force for good in the world. Every time I read about some new project or innovation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, I'm struck by Bill Gates' philanthropy and innovative use of his own special skills as well as some of the smartest folks around!

In 2020 when Alchemy calls me I will be living in Washington D.C. working as a lobbyist or working for the CIA. As a lobbyist I will try and get the government to work towards the ideas of whatever company I work for. As a member of the CIA I will be overseas keeping my nation safe any way that they need me.

I chose to follow Jason Shah who is the founder of ineedapencil.com. His website helps low-budget income students in the US prepare for the SAT and prepare for college. I think this is awesome because I come from a school in Charlotte, North Carolina where a lot of students have very little money and very little drive for college. I think that it would be awesome to help kids from my community do good on the SAT and get into college. I contacted Mr. Shah's company via email but have not yet…

I like the secret, "Innovation (often) comes from constraint (If you’ve got very few resources, you’re forced to be very creative in using and reusing them.)" In the Western world we have access to so many resources and we don't think about what it would be like if we couldn't easily get things like water. It would be interesting to see what we would do if water wasn't easiy attained and how different our society would be as a wh***.

I picked Alexis Belonio and the Center for Rice Husk Energy Technology as my social innovator (http://energymap-scu.org/center-for-rice-husk-energy-technology/). They promote the production and use of rice husk gasifiers to provide clean and cheap energy to the Philippines and East Asia. Millions of tons of rice husks are wasted every year when they can be turned into energy easily and cheaply. Rice is a major…

Out of the article of which all was pretty good I believe the best part of social innovation is in teaching the skill to innovation to the people themselves. Like the parable goes," give a man a fish he eats for a day but teach him how to fish and he'll eat for the rest of his life". That principle truly applies here, because what is the best thing we can do for a developing nation but to educate them and teach them the skills to make their own society stronger and more efficient. And also…

Harish Hande is the co-founder of Solar Electric Light Company of India (SELCO). SELCO has entered into partnerships with small banks across rural India to bring electricity to more than 100,000 village homes that had never before had electricity. The home owners get loads to put in solar systems and pay them off over time by saving the money they used to spend on kerosene and fees to charge their cell phones. This socially innovative approach has enabled poor people in areas that do not…

20 years from, I hope to be either in college working on getting degrees in japanese, Music, Graphic design, and Animal behavior science, or already having one of those jobs. I plan of having 2-4 dogs, a rabbit, and maybe a bird as pets. Also, 20 years from now i plan to skydive. I think it would be really fun. However, when Alchemy calls me to help in toykyo, hopefully i will be there to help.

My favorite secret is that problems are not always obviuos from afar. Sometime people can be so blind to real problems in the world. These problems happen everywhere. Some of them we can't fix right away, and some of them we can. We need to start to take action to fix some of these problems before its too late.

I am 70 years old, so I don't remember the exact date...lol. But, it is March 2020. I am just setting the table for dinner on the porch again. I grab my sweater from the back of a chair in the kitchen as I collect the silverware and place mats for my husband, Howard, and I. Whoops, I nearly trip over the cat on my way out of the back door.
We are having our favorite Lowcountry Boil. We like this dish, because on our pensions we cannot afford much. Howard went shrimping this morning.…

Another thing I am doing to help fight the global food security problem involves my fiance. My fiance is an agronomist. While he was in graduate school he developed a formula that mixes natural humates and seaweed to provide a natural, organic fertilizer that bolsters crop production and decreases the need for water/irrigation. This product - and products like it - have been used very successfully on golf courses and farms in the United States. In fact, he used it to create lush, green golf…

To help address food security in my city, I attended the orientation for volunteers at the Lowcountry Food Bank. A group of EVOKE agents from The Citadel will volunteer at the Lowcountry Food Bank warehouse during the first weekend of December.
The Lowcountry Food Bank serves as sort of a clearing house for a variety of agencies in my city that deliver food to households that are food insecure. The warehouse accepts foods donated from grocery stores, farmers, restaurants and other…

According to the USDA-ERS website (http://usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome?navid=DISASTER_ASSISTANCE&parentnav=DISASTER_SAFETY) the US federal government is providing $16 million in financial and technical assistance to help producers facing extreme drought conditions. This funding will be available to crop and livestock producers in 19 states to help them cope with the adverse…

My favorite tip is learning to accept. If you learn to accept people, culture, religion and ideas, people will want to be around you and will want to work with you because you don't mind heir characteristics. This is an important factor in communicating and working with people everywhere. If you can learn to have acceptance, then you can accomplish a lot in business, which will get you pretty far in life.

According to the US Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service (USDA-ERS) (http://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/food-nutrition-assistance/food-security-in-the-us/key-statistics-graphics.aspx) approximately 85.1 percent of US households were food secure in 2011. However, 14.9 percent of households did not have access, at all times, to enough food for an active,…
