LEARN1: Sharing skills, after listening

Seriously involved in my mission to help changing the world, I'll try to post here what I learnt from this very first task.

Many of the "secrets" proposed at designinafrica.wordpress.com/2008/10/23/innovation-in-africa-tips are good suggestions, for a wise and responsible design addressed to developing countries and urgent issues. I consider some of… Continue

Talk to someone who has done it. I believe that the key to
innovation in international development is truly understanding the
problem, and using your imagination is not good enough.

Provide skills, not just finished technologies

Hi everybody,

I wanted to discuss about this subject.

In Africa, a lot of people are uneducated. They are still embracing skills that their people learned many years ago, and in their minds, they still live in old times. And they are facing problems that their level of skills and knowledge isn t adequate. To live in modern times, and to be more developed, they have to be more educated. A lot of people think that if they help any country in Africa…

Africa Harvest

I had an idea that my superhero should be teaching sustainable, organic, small-scale farming to subsistence farmers in Africa. It turned out to be quite hard to find.

I found two interesting characters on the Ashoka.org network. The…

My favorite tip for becomming a social innovator:

"Provide skills, not just finished technologies. The current revolution in design for developing countries is the notion of co-creation, of teaching the skills necessary to create the solution,

rather than simply providing the solution. By involving the community throughout the design process, you can help equip people to innovate and contribute to the evolution of the product. Furthermore, they…

creating a transparent technology

You can create something very great but you find that people dont like it, and guess what, the truth might be that they really need your product, but just because it is so complecated, not user friendly, they will not consider it as a solution.

EVOKING in schools - even without computers

I was thinking this morning about how EVOKE could look in a school (I'm thinking K-12). Since a lot of what makes EVOKE work is that people want to go read what's new and comment on other blogs, I can see issues in classrooms where there are only one or two computers, or where kids are only able to be in a computer lab for a short time. Many classrooms and schools don't have computers for all the kids. It got me to thinking, what would EVOKE look like without the Ning network? Picture… Continue

Thinking like a child-powering a village

"Think like a child – children have no limit to their thinking"

I went to a exhibit about water at The Natural History Museum in New York; there was a model of a rural village's well pump that was underneath a playground. When the kids played and pushed around a merry-go-round, it pumped water.

I'm a child and this is my thinking

My idea is that, properly rigged up, 5 kids… Continue

GAME1; My Favorite Power is SPARK

Spark is by far my favorite EVOKE power.

Spark to me is defined as; character, passion, belief, inspiration and boldness.

Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf's edge and and the beach. Back and…

Understanding that resources are limited

"Try living for a week on $2 a day."

Living in our times (and some of us being born in these times) has made us a little oblivious as to how difficult it once was to get the resources not just for our daily routine... but for surviving. We take housing, clothing, food (and all of it's…

Innovation comes from constraint

"When balanced with a healthy disregard for the impossible, constraints can shape and focus problems, leading to truly creative solutions", these are the words of Marissa Meyer in her article Turning limitations into innovation. Constraint in resources ignites passion and imagination which inturn generate creativity.

Rural Technological Innovations

Social innovation could be explained in many ways, however one of the simplest way i feel is by explaining the evidences of necessity which lead to such social innovations. Many a times simple ideas have turned complex situations into simpler ones, however using innovate methods, such approaches can be defined as social innovations esepcially when the innovation gets adopted by social system and difuses over a period of time. I have a chance to come across and learn such social innovations…
