Crisis Networking:Covering Risk

Peter Sandman, an expert in risk communication explains why risk truly has two elements- hazard and outrage- and why understanding them both is crucial to crisis communication as well as pandermic journalism.

He said: Risk=hazard + outrage.

That is, the risk that kills people and the risk that upset people are completely different. If you know a risk is deadly, that tells you almost nothing whether it's upsetting. If you know a risk is…

009 CRISIS NETWORKING: Do journalists care or just report

http://www.nieman.harvard.edu/Microsites/NiemanGuideToCoveringPandemicFlu/CrisisCommunication/CoveringRisk.aspx:

'Like all professionals, journalists are profoundly ambivalent about their own norms. Any time anybody stands up in front of a roomful of journalists and says, “You ought to care. You ought to make people realize how serious obesity is!” reporters…

Biased information seeking

I find the following piece of insight from Harvard's guide to crises communication to be very true.

"The relationship between information and emotion is that strong emotion provokes biased information seeking. The stronger your emotions, the more you will learn; but it’s not neutral learning. You’re learning in…

LEARN 9 - The Five Secrets of Communication

Oh, EVOKE. One of the things I don't like about EVOKE is its tendencies to throw out links and making us figure out the rest. It just bugs me for some reason. Okay, well enough with my mini-rant. I suppose I'll make it easier for other people trying to wrap up their EVOKEing. So without any hesitation, Nieman's Guide to Covering Pandemic Flu. However, I'll only do the first three, cause you have to do some work.

Crisis Networking 5 Secrets

Managing Panic in a Pandemic, is in my opinion the most important of the five.

When people become scared, the become very irrational, making them a threat to themselves and others.

By keeping the fears minimal, it can cause avoidance on many potential problems if this cannot be controlled.

Crisis Communication IMAGINE 9

If it were the year 2011 and the flu pandemic hit my part of the country and I could call on a group of non-medical people to help "save the day," I would call on local citizens (neighbors, friends, families, etc). Citizens would need to help and support each other. Citizen volunteers would help pass out whatever resources were needed to make it through the pandemic. Local law enforcement, fire departments, medical professionals, and others that are usually heros will be so busy that it will be… Continue

Crisis Communication: Learn 9

The "secret" that I found most interesting was hidden in the article, "How do People React in a Pandemic." The article mentions that during a time of crisis, the current practice is to instruct people to react, while attempting to remove fear or panic from their minds and actions. In doing this, the media and experts tend to lead people into "denial," which is described as worse than the act of panicking. Now here comes the fascinating part...the article suggests that instead of saying,…

Imagine 9 Who would you call to help in a Pandemic

Hello Channel News 9 Sunnydupree here and I am calling to report a terrible pandemic outbreak of flu that we are just now seeing people in Amarillo come down sick with it. We need to make a call to action to all members of the community medical and non medical alike to come together and triage and organize this health crisis. I will be mobilizing members of my Art is Earth Darksite and the Delta Team to help in this crisis. Be sure and put a crawl on the local…

My Call to action online would be to the economist community, as we have see when a pandemic or other crisis like it happens it usually brings with it economic damage to the entity that sustain the crisis.

Design an emergency call to action for a NON-medical community.

I think the work that Ember did is of great significance. An emergency call to action for a non-medical community that I would use, would be to get together a group of hygienists and nutritionist to give advice on simple methods of how to obstain from contracting the epidemic and what food and liquids should be consumed to built up your immune system making you less susceptible to the pandemic. I would use Embers idea of the net as a medium of communication to people across the globe. There…

The 5 secrets of Communication

Personally, I think that the most important of the five secrets of crisis networking, is managing panic. The government and the media play a siginifcant role in the way that panic amongst the people is managed when any one georgraphical location is experiencing a crisis. There are a number of guidelines that should be adhered to by media institutions that inform the people about a crisis to ensure that their response is not one of panic. These are accordingly, is gaining public trust. If people… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
