M-PESA is an interesting article regarding the citizens of Kenya. What it is, is a mobile app that allows you to transfer money from one person to another, without the use of a bank. This gives independence to the citizens and the ability to not use a bank if they choose.

For my social innovator, I chose to follow Hal Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees. Steinbrenner sits on the board of directors for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a group which helps children of fallen soldiers. Steinbrenner's efforts have provided the opportunity for innumerable children of fallen heroes to attend school and gain an education. This selfless patriotism has revolutionized the American sporting industry, as teams all over the nation now have similar…

I would love to shadow Alex Hornstein. He is someone who invents, and develops and deploys innovative clean technologies that are meant to help increase global access to electricity. He also is committed to reducing carbon emissions and has recently signed on to build a solar pocket factory. This is a machine that will produce small solar panels that could potentially provide power to millions of people worldwide.

My hero of social innovation that I am shadowing online will be Jay Cousins from AfriGadget because of the simple yet effective tools he created that can innovate African society one child at a time. One simple example is the Betabook which is a white board book that can help promote learning within Africa. I will keep up with them online by liking the AfriGadget page on facebook.

The Social Innovator I chose is 'Aulani Wilhelm who is the founder of Island Water. 'Aulani Wilhelm is also a Stanford Social Innovation Fellow. Island Water helps provide and build fresh water supplies for islands surrounded by salt water. Water is the one thing need to survive by everyone and everything. Most people do not think that water is an issue on islands surrounded by water. However when that island is surrounded by saltwater, it is unusable as drinking water. Desalination methods…

Earlier today, I discovered a CEO who is making waves of change in the world. Her name is Nicole Stubbs. The aim of her organization is to reduce any and all lending/capital repayment to countries that are in developing regions. I truly believe that her focus is a cause that we need to set ours ears and eyes to for the decades to come. Keep Nicole and her organization in your thoughts and prayers.

For my hero I chose fellow University of Florida student Marla Murno. Marla served as the Women's Leadership Institute Director under the Women's Student Association as well as the Communications intern for the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. I added her on Facebook and then sent her the attached message letting her know about the assignment and how I chose her as a social innovation role model. Feeling bold? Step out of the shadows -- send a email, Facebook message or Twitter…

I have chosen Florida Gators basketball head coach Billy Donovan as my role model. I feel as though Donovan has done an excellent thus far leading and inspiring the Gators to be the very best they can be. This season went well as we made it closer to the championship than we have in years. I am following Shane Battier on Facebook. This man is not only a hero in the fact of being the an amazing talent of my generation, but he is also an amazing human being for helping people that do not have as much as he has been given in his life. With his karaoke charity event, Battier was able to have fun with other Miami Heat players to raise money for kids that cannot afford to go to college. By following him on Facebook, I am able to keep up with his daily happenings whenever he…

Barack Obama! As this nation's first black president, he inspires me every day. I really don't think anyone gives him enough credit for all the things he does. He came in as president in a time when the US was totally screwed up and everyone blames him for doing things he has to do. Anywho, yup he's my hero and I keep up with him using Twitter!!!

I chose Eric Stowe that I found on poptech.org. "Eric Stowe believes that every child has a right to clean water; to act on that belief, he founded Splash (formerly A Child’s Right), which cleans water for over 200,000 children in schools, orphanages, street shelters, hospitals, and rescue homes in Asia and East Africa." (poptech.org). In America i feel like we take such a precious resource such as clean water for granted and forget that it isn't available to everyone. I started following…

I chose Congressman Thomas Rooney as my social change role model. He is the congressman for the 17th district of Florida and is working to improve the lives of many floridians in a very large district. I chose him because of his impeccable work ethic and character. He is passionate about fixing the issues that face the state. After researching his representative history, I admire his efforts to stay true to his morals and values and to resist the temptation of focusing on politics over…

Instead of following a leader on the Internet, I followed a leader in my community. His name is Jared Ginsburg and he is service leader in a mentoring program at Lincoln Middle School in Gainesville. His organization, Greenhouse Ministries, has been working with students at Lincoln for several years. In our training session before our first mentoring session, Jared told us, "this is the trenches where the next generation of poverty will be fought." His words really resonated with me. I, like…
