Food Issue in South Carolina

On the food map there were no places were pinpointed in North America. What I do know is that South Carolina farmers are having an issue with crop yielding do to lack of nutrition in the soil. This is do to many things such is over sowing of crops and use of pesticides. Pesticides are a big deal as they poison the soil and much like salt can make it very infertile. Some of the innovation they are making towards enriching the soil again is using better fertilizers. The big innovation is…

Learning about local Food Security

The biggest challenge to food security here in the local Gainesville community is the economic disparity in the community. We have a lot of kids struggling to pay for college and the professors (who live on the west side of town) and then the lower-income locals who live on the east side of town. They do meet slightly in the middle, but because of the separation, combined with the fact that restrictions are put on how many people St. Francis house can feed, many of the less fortunate in…

Learn - Food Security

In Gainesville, there is a local food bank, Bread of the Mighty, that provides a week's worth of meals from 3 dollars. The organization specifically buys the food essential to life (i.e. vegetables, rice, and other cheap heathy options). Although this is only for a smaller, local population, the idea of helping others with a small amount of donation can go a long way if it was practiced on a larger scale. With this effort, we could possibly help out people in other nations and continents.

Food Challenge

In an article posted July14, 2013, the Salvation Army in Naples, FL had a food shortage. After helping 3,800 people that summer, by the time the article came out, they had about a week's worth of food left, which would probably only feed about 500 people. They were in desperate need of donations. Food shortages are common here in Florida because of our large populations and little amount of living space. The Salvation Army does good work, but they needed help this past summer and I have a…

Food Security

There is an incredible organization called Feeding America which helps provide food security to those who are insecure. In Tampa, FL about 12% of all homes are food insecure. Over half of their clients who are food insecure have had to choose between paying for utilities of heating their homes, and providing food for their families. Feeding America is a food bank that collects and distribute food to those in need based on the extremity of their situation.

Food Security

Food Security is a complex issue- there is more to it than having or not having enough food to eat. At minimum, food security includes the availability of adequate and safe foods and the assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways. In Alachua County, there are an estimated 50,000 food insecure people.

One organization which seeks to tackle this problem is Florida Certified Organic Growers and

Consumers, Inc. In 2010, FOG implemented a plan called…

Local food insecurity

One of the biggest problems in Alachua county is food insecurity for our youth. One program that works to combat this issue is the Food for Kids back pack program. This program works to collect food donations in local areas to send home with underprivileged students in Alachua County public schools. This allows children to have enough food for the weekend, so that they are not being malnourished until they go back to school. Advocating for this issue is crucial so that more students are able…

Food Security

In the U.S. food security is not as horrid an issue as it is in other parts of the world, namely Africa. However, by sustaining food locally, it becomes easier to worry less about ourselves and more about others. In Gainesville, Fl., Bread of the Mighty is a local food bank that prides itself in providing seven meals per dollar donated. Seven meals, thus with 3 dollars one can eat for a week! This is not done by purchasing tons of unnecessary foods but rather the essentials. Often these…

Food Security LEARN2

One of the biggest challenges in my local area is that there is a large population of elderly citizens that do not have the assistance or the resources to obtain substantial and health food. In response to this problem, my community has a very large Meals-on-Wheels program that works to deliver daily meals to those in need.

Mission 2

Like many communities in the United States, Gainesville is no stranger to problems with food security. According to an article published in the Gainesville Sun in 2009, there are roughly 28,000 citizens of Alachua County utilizing government issued food stamps and this number is growing every year. What does this fact mean to me? Initially, it stuns me to think there are so many people who need this assistance to feed their family and maintain their health. It also makes me want to become…

Local Insight into Hunger Issues

I work twice a week in downtown Gainesville and it is extremely common to see homeless men and women all over the area. It is not often that I stop and think about how different their lives are from mine and that I have plenty of food to eat on a daily basis but that they probably don't know when they'll eat their next meal. It really makes me stop and think about the amount of money I spend on needless snacks and starbucks drinks each week instead of helping the hungry all around me. In the…

Learn 2 - Food security in my local community

One of the biggest challenges in the Gainesville, Florida, community when it comes to food security is the homeless population. They don't have money to afford food, so they can be seen all around Gainesville, even on our university's campus, begging for money and/or food.

One innovative solution to help with this is being done by St. Francis House in Gainesville. They have a soup kitchen that provides their 35 residents three meals a day. Lunch is provided everyday to many additional…

Hunger Struggles in North Florida

In the 17-county area of North Florida, more than 342,000 individuals are considered to be “food insecure.” These people don't know where they will get their next meals. On a national level, 25% of children don't know where they will get their next meals. An innovative solution that is already under way is a community effort to help these people. Organizations such as food banks and homeless shelters offer meals to help people in need, but these are only temporary solutions and there needs…

Learn- Food Security

There is a big income gap throughout America and, in turn, there is also a large gap for food security. Many Americans that receive federal aid or support also have poor health and nutrition. This is due to the small nature of the stipend and the rate at which it is handed out. Not only are the payments very small, but they are dealt out once a month. Because of this, Americans struggle to stretch the money throughout the entire month. This leads to less food as well as less-nutricious food…

Food Security

Food is one of the most important thing in our lives. Our energy come from the food. If we don't eat any food, we won't have our powers and die. Basically, we eat food 3 times in a day, but sometimes poor people can't eat more than once in a day. In my country, Indonesia, I always see that there are many children at the streets and sing some songs, play the guitar, and many thing. The reason that they are there is they want some money to eat food. With 237 million inhabitants, Indonesia is…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
