A crash course in changing the world.
The 1983 trip to Fuji was a case study I looked at and really enjoyed because it highlight on some of the economic variations that a culture has to undergo. They shared had capitalism was a powerful competitor and how economic and political governance are very important aspects for any society to function properly.

Live on $2 a day:
I believe this is the best option to truly learn what it is like to live in the shoes of others because it helps you understand the value of a dollar, as unoriginal as it may sound, it is the simplest way to put it. You learn to work for what you have and since $2 dollars doesn't do much for you today then you learn to fend for yourself and scavenge and know what it's like to have nothing in this world, to lose everything. Once you have been put in one of the lowest…

One social issue that was not discussed directly in Urgent Evoke was climate change. Although many of the issues were interrelated to climate change, it was not directly tackled through Urgent Evoke. I think that this is an important issue that could be discussed.
It would be interesting to see what people would learn if climate change was a part of urgent evoke. Perhaps someone would even come up with a world-changing project to help solve the issue of climate change!

I discovered a positive story when researching the website for this blog post. According to www.unwomen.org, there is an initiative going on in Papua New Guinea where the markets are being made safer for the women vendors and children.
Port Moresby is the location of a market where the vendors are about 80% women. These women were often harassed, were victims of violence, and were also forced to endure inadequate facilities. However, because of…

The road to permanent water coverage for Everyone Forever is challenging, but the outcomes are easy to root for—more children are in school, more individuals are employed, more families are healthy and thriving, and more communities are collaborating and growing. From there, the impact continues to ripple out on a national and global scale. If we invest more and work more now to create sustainable and replicable water and sanitation infrastructure, we can focus more on our futures…our…

There are many new innovative ideas being thought up all the time about the future of money. There are cards, apps, and virtual currency being developed, and I think all of these inventions are going to change the future of money. One idea that I thought was especially interesting was found on www.wired.com, and it is called GetGiving.
GetGiving is an app that would allow people to donate amounts of money to charities and organizations easily and…

According to sustainabletable.org, there are many factors and challenges that cause food insecurity. One of the challenges that was listed was food distribution. According to the site, there is currently enough food produced to feed everyone, but distributing the food is one of the challenges that affect food security.
Another challenge that contributes to food insecurity is the environment and natural disasters. When natural disasters such as droughts occur they affect the…

When it comes to crisis communication, there was one insight that I had never thought of. The insight "Coming to Terms With Uncertainty" was very interesting to me, as I had never considered this. It would obviously be difficult for a journalist to inform or warn the public about a crisis if there is still uncertainty concerning the crisis. It would be especially difficult if the crisis was something that there was very little research about, as it would not be easy to give the public advice…

I really enjoyed the advice to talk to the people with the problem. That fits my style of thinking very well. I don't observe problems well myself, but I am good at solving them when I know what the problems are. Talking to the people experiencing the problem would be ideal for me to begin innovating.

The story I investigated dealt with the recent abduction of 100 young girls, ages 12 to 17, from their school in Nigeria. The article, a joint statement on the issue, highlights the fact that schools should remain a safe place that foster a conducive environment for learning. Girls and young women should be allowed to go to school without fearing for their safety in order to fulfill their rightful role as equal citizens of the world. This issue saddens me greatly because these are innocent…

LifeStraw is an awesome innovation that could have the potential to bring millions of people clean drinking water. The straw acts as a filter while it is being used, reducing contaminants that could be life-threatening. LifeStraw is already making a difference by donating an LifeStraw institutional water purifier every time someone purchases a LifeStraw filter. These water purifiers provide a child in Africa with clean drinking water for a wh*** school year.
This innovation is…

A site called springwise.com had a technology listed that was developed by former Apple engineers that learns how to conserve energy. The innovation is called Nest, and it is a smart thermostat that learns about its owners and adapts based on their habits.
The thermostat records the usage and patterns of the owners, and learns where it can make changes in order to save energy. For instance, if the owner of the house always turns off the air before going to work Monday-Friday, but…

For this mission, I decided to learn more about an organization that is creating sustainable ways to power our everyday lives. This organization is Revolution Energy, whose mission is to become the leader in providing affordable and meaningful energy solutions for municipalities, non-profits, and businesses seeking sustainability who are unable to finance large investments and/or are dissatisfied with other energy service companies who provide high-cost, low-impact solutions.
I really…

I recently read a book called The Good Food Revolution, which focuses on the concept of food security. Will Allen wrote the book and it follows his actions of trying to provide residents in an urban area with healthy food. One of the main challenges that Allen faces in his book is the concept of food security and the "farm to table" concept. The book is centered in an urban area of Milwaukee, where the residents do not have access to fresh fruit or vegetables. A majority of the places that…

My favorite secret/tip was to talk to the people that have the problem and listen to what they say. I feel that to often a solution will be created and implemented and then fail because the individuals or organization did not learn about the culture or community being affected. You need to have the best understanding possible of the resources available and the people involved to be able to design something that will be used effectively.

Alternative Currency is a system to keep money circulating locally even longer, it's really good for local skills, products and reselling into the community.
