It is a rainy World Water Day in 2020, but I am excited to be at a special gathering unveiling a project that has taken quite a while to accomplish. While another Social Innovator is unveiling a much anticipated energy-efficient reverse-osmosis device, I've planned something that involved a few more people in its undertaking. It started with my connections with teaching and my local Chamber of Commerce education committee ten years ago, and turned into a stellar talk of mine delivered at the…

Since I live just outside of rainy Seattle, it is difficult to imagine those areas of the world that don't have drinkable (or at least, easily processable) water falling from the sky in abundance! However, it is easy to think about the water in our local aquifers running out. So, my favourite clean water technologies had to do with rainwater harvesting.
For example, just a few hundred miles south of me in San Fransisco, they noticed that their bus shelters were running rainwater off…

I just donated money to an organization that makes food accessible to those who can't afford to buy the food that is plentiful in my region. The
Vedic Cultural Centre provides free food that has been specially blessed for body and soul. It is all vegetarian, which automatically makes it more sustainable that soup kitchens that provide meat, and operates seven days a week. It also delivers special Mercy Meals to the elderly or those…

In March 2020, I'll still be in a Brooklyn apartment with close friends. We'll be eating produce we've grown ourselves on our rooftop garden or a local lot in town, and may invite other friends over who will bring produce they've grown; we'll share what each other does not have. Each of my friends and I might prepare a different meal; I might make vegetable paninis. We will eat all we've made and not waste it; whatever can't be eaten will be used to make compost…

My husband has cooked up a vegetarian meal to share with friends. It consists of lentils, rice and soybeans, all of which have been safely genetically modified to increase crop yield so that the crop takes half the acreage of farm land that were once needed to grow the same foods. This allows for more wild lands to flourish without being planted.
The meal was entirely vegetarian, since factory farming is no longer done due to the lack of sustainable practices for keeping and feeding…

Last year, writer and researcher Raj Patel gave a speech at the Brooklyn Food Conference. I'd like to point it out to my fellow Evoke agents.
Patel discusses the political impetus behind food riots. He calls the tortilla riots in Mexico of 2007 "a specific critique of the government."
In his speech, he also touches on how vegetarianism is more…

I am a mother, a wife, an activist, a student of life.
My meals are not just about the food, but about the experience. Every meal is shared with loved ones, eating on-the-go is no longer vogue - meals are a time to share food, thoughts, ideas, questions, and more. In the past ten years improvements to the meat production industry worldwide has meant less of a burden on our environmental systems, but I and my family have remained vegetarian. The food we eat isn't that different from…

It is the 4th of July and the sun is at a sweltering station in the sky as I await my food from the sizzling grill. But, I'm not hot at all. I'm wearing a robe that is generating energy from my body heat. Just as photovoltaic cells capture free electrons from light, the cells in my robe are diligently collecting free electrons from the infared "light" heat from my body. As the heat dissipates in the form of stored, electric energy, I feel quite cool as a natural byproduct! Later, I'll unplug…

Rick D***son invented a simple, small generator that can be carried on a human and picks up the kinetic energy from the vibrations of movement. I imagine wearing a belt made of these to my belly dance class!

The day is my childs birthday and we're spending it outdoors. It is sunny and warm as we walk to the local park where his friends have already started to gather. As we get to the edge of the park we can see how people are still arriving on their bicycles with the children either riding in front of their mom or dad or seated behind them.
The children go off running, making up games or playing old ones all the while shouting in excitement. It is their day-off from school and they are…

Though rather reluctant to pick any of these secrets I have chosen: Economic Sustainability. To begin with I will explain my reluctance. The general theme here seems to be - Money. If it is not money then the secret involves direct, personal experience to learn from your desired recipient, which all budding innovators would love to do but may never be able. Thus I am reluctant, where are the secret to obtaining none profit funds to aid the less fortunate? Where are the tips…

I saw the above story on CNN international while going through my daily routine. I really like the prospects that this new technology holds. Specifically
I like how this could be used in Africa to produce energy in rural
communities. I had the opportunity
to spend some time in both Nigeria and Benin Republic. While I was in Nigeria I visited Old
Oyo City and while in Benin Republic I stayed in…

Global warming is the result of a human population that refuses to limit
individual rights to reproduce, coupled with an insatiable desire to
consume.
In 2020 I will be a senior, working with local and global organizations,
facilitating adolescent and adult learning, while lobbying governments
to make policy changes that will enhance the sustainability of the human
species.

This quote by Hardy D. Jackson is the true essence of a personal 7 year-long odysse which left me at the point where I started yet the difference between now and then couldn't be any more striking.
Success doesn't come easily. It doesn't come quickly. In fact, it won't come at all, you have to grab it and keep holding on no matter the circ**stances. People will tell you that you're going to fail. Same may laugh at you, some will think you're crazy. And then there will be other that…
