Now that you are reading this article I am 100 years old! Maybe I am still alive or somewhere in the "next life". Anyway, I am not writing to talk to you about eternal life.
My children, grand children and grand grand children, I dont know how much longer I will live thats why I am writing this, such the even when I am gone you can always refer to it.
1. Take time to learn your culture and appreciate it. We have some cultural practices that we…

As this network grows we need to hear more voices from around the world. I have been honored to meet so many of you from India, South Africa, Chile & Argentina, Uganda, Italy, the UK, Canada, the US and many more countries. What about Cote d'Ivoire? Madagascar? Peru? Indonesia? The Phillippines?
Many of the most crisis-prone areas are also among the lowest in the world for internet penetration, the essential step needed to make sure that we're bringing great leaders on…

The fact is that this is by far the most likely event to break out iin South Africa. It has already happened twice (although with less severity the second time), and it will most probably happen again. The most probable cause of it is the crippling rate of poverty in South Africa.
Now I'm sure you're wondering what I mean by xenophobia? You probably know that the dictionary xenophobia means fear of foreigners. However in South Africa it has a different, more sinister…

My favorite secret is
Provide skills, not just finished technologies. It is so important that we, as outsiders, come into a community to 'solve' the problem. We need to work
with the community to create sustainable, long-term solutions. Teaching new skills is incredibly important so that a community can thrive on its own.
Also of note, prior to providing skills, one must also LISTEN to the right people and…

One of a series of 8 videos on water from National Geographic. Well worth the time to watch. Each is around 5 minutes in length and provides local information, perspective and attitudes. Sorry about the Advertising, but Thass part of our internet life too. This project is from Lake Okavango, Botswana,.

There are 2 great ideas being implemented in africa which i thought were great. One is very simple, a water transport container in the form of a wheel, it is a large barrel with a handle that can be rolled or pushed from the site back to the home. Another is a straw that filters water as you drink through it. This allows people to drink from almost any water source safely. Simple and creative and inexpensive ideas like this are what we need to help third world countries.

I first heard of UrgentEvoke when a friend posted a link to a video on my facebook page. "This reminded me of you!" he wrote under the video. When I clicked to watch, it was Jane McGonigal talking about how game designers and the people who play their games can save the world. I always wished I had more time to play web-based games like WOW, but I decided - even if I didn't have much time - I would join UrgentEvoke. I was a few weeks after the start, but I thought the idea was fantastic.…

Based on the information shared on the "Innovation in Africa tips" post, one thing in particular stood out for me on all three entries: listen to the people around you and shape things to their culture.
If an innovator does not have the respect of the community, how are they going to change it? If the people of the society have no vested interest in what is being accomplished, how will they own it and use it when the innovator is gone? Just as the first entry says: "If they stir their…

I imagine a day when our system of exchange will be based on the good that nonprofits actually do. I imagine a day when a woman in the Congo who is helping the women in her town recover from rape can get a $100,000 grant from a billionaire in New York.
I imagine the day when our barriers will be broken down enough so that anyone who applies for a grant…

The story of the traditional healers from Oaxaca (mhh… I wonder how this word is pronounced) immediately caught my attention. These healers have struggle for recognition by official associations and the benefits that have accrued to indigenous women are now quantifiable. I found additional information on these awesome…

There were a lot of interesting tips within the "Innovation in Africa tips" text. Most people have an idea about the major constraints of people living in underdeveloped countries. Maybe not all of them but we generally know that they are living with quite few monetary resources, food, etc. I also heard it quite a few times in my International trade class that most people on the Earth live with less than 2 bucks a day and in some case 1$. The one that struck me the msot was…
