Food Security Action

After reading about how many people were facing food security in my area, I decided to go out and try to make a difference. I have some experience gardening and know of a few families on the east side of town that have room in their back yards for one. I went and bought their seeds, gloves, gardening tools, etc. I've known these two families for about four years now so I was very excited to help them feed themselves and their children. I spent one weekend showing both families the proper…

Dinner March 2010

It's March 10, 2020 and we are throwing a huge family get together at my house. I have decided to throw a garden party, where we eat outside with solar-powered tikis that illuminate my garden.

Since I love salad, we are starting our meal with the variety of vegetables I planted from my garden.

I also have different vegetarian items on my dinner menu, like a delicate minestrone, eggplant parmigiana, with noodles that I made at home from squash that I picked fro my own… Continue

From garden to plate

It's March 10, 2020 and I'm having a potluck dinner with neighbors at my home. Everyone is bringing a dish they made from produce they raised in our local community garden. I've made my favorite dish - roasted winter squash with a tomato-chipotle chocolate mole. Everything but the chocolate was grown right next door - or in my own garden out back. And the chocolate came from a local coop that sources it from fair trade farms in South America that provide a sustainable living wage for the… Continue

Food sustainability is food security

I live in an area that has a vast disparity between the rich and the poor. It is a tourist-based area divided into a small population of wealthy part-time residents, a slightly larger population of middle-class white collar workers and a large population of low-paid service workers who are highly dependent on seasonal work and who compete in the off season for a small number of low-income jobs. This means that a lot of people can't afford to buy healthy food on a regular basis.

On the… Continue

my town is a Transition Town!

While doing some research for ACT 7: Urban Resilience, I discovered that my town is a Transition Town with a thriving community focused on resilience. My neighbors know a lot!

My ACT plan for this topic is to gently ease into it, since this is an area where I tend to feel very uncomfortable. I might start by visting the…

The cutest farmer

So, My niece and I are in her back yard where she proudly announces to me that "those are gonna be 10-15 onions, and thats MY cuc**bers".

I have spent hours in the back yard watching her and my boy play, and as I complete this mission I think about how wonderful it is that these toddlers can be a part of creating a sustainable food source.

While my brother and sister-in-law were away I took up the care and maintenance of that garden and felt a small bit of the…

Sustainable cities, easy as one-two-three!

Here's how we can have urban resiliency.

1. Everyone, get on your bike.

2. Everyone have a backyard garden.

3. Everyone get a cistern for your runoff, so you can have access to clean water.

4. Everyone, if you know someone who would…

Local Food Crisis in Austin Texas

In Austin the big stores, Walmart, Randalls/Safeway and HEB have cornered the grocery market

We also have high end stores like wh*** Foods, Natural Grocery and Sun harvest. Food prices increased by a whopping 20% in april 2010, the biggest leap since 1984.

I see people sifting through the bulk food aisle because they're barely getting by on their social security and welfare payments and unemployment.

I see long lines at the drivethroughs for fast food, and smell the rank… Continue

2075 Vision for Resilient Cultures

Over the last few decades we have seen the necessity of symbiotic relationships with all types of life: silicon and carbon based cultures have mingled and our consciousness is no longer h*** erectus -- we are now fully h*** evolutis. We have taken biology and evolution into our own hands to craft the types of creatures we wish to be, whether crossed with intelligent devices or custom-tailored genetic cultivation. We are the new hybrids and it is up to each one of us to make the most of our… Continue

Access to community garden for my grandfather

I've contacted a local community garden to see if there's a place available for my grandfather to join. He used to be an avid and innovative gardener and mourns the loss of that part of his life now that he's in a tiny unit.

If there's a place available, I'll pay for his membership. If not, I'll need to look at establishing another garden. After all, if there's sufficient demand to create a waiting list, there must be sufficient demand to sustain another garden!

Food from a far? How about food from home.

I convinced my family to help improve everyone's food security by improving ours.

Recently, me and my family decided to try our hand at a little bit of agriculture. Having gone out, bought seeds and the necessary equipment and a few extra bits we got started on our long, tedious, but ultimately worthwhile goal of home-grown produce.

The journey was hard work,…

California 2020: Interactive Mapping for Resiliency

California 2020 is a map that I've started to show where green roof projects, gratitude gardens, community spaces, energy solutions and emergency food options will exist in various areas. It will take some time to develop this resiliency plan throughout California so my mapping will center on five areas where I live and work most frequently throughout CA. This embedded starter map is taken from our current neighborhood in MidCity Los Angeles, ground zero to this week's episode. You can see…

Dinner Re-imagined - IMAGINE2

Today was a near-record hot day for March. No snow on the balcony for weeks.

It's dinner time and the solar-powered grill is heating up nicely. I'm the food prep expert (I like to chop stuff) and Jim handles the final cooking.

Sipping on the latest organic white wine from the nearby Niagara region, we relax after a long working day and start puttering around the kitchen.

Tonight's dinner is simple and tasty. Yesterday's finds from the local farmer market includes some… Continue

Tokyo Food Crisis

In 2020 I'll be living in Vancouver with my wife and two children. We will live in a neighbourhood with a strong community, one that has formed through improved densificiation around one of the developing transit nodes. Changes in the planning laws have allowed for more diversity in neighbourhoods and people are now able to work and live in neighbourhoods creating greater interaction between people, improved safety with more people walking, and a much lower environmental footprint through a…

School Garden Movement

I am a member of a worldwide non-profit organization called Slow Food, I am also on the board of the local chapter serving as the treasurer. One of our national objectives is supporting the Time for Lunch campaign in which we held an event nationwide. This event was a pot luck hosted by each local chapter. We are also working on a school garden project thats get student to do hands on learning while growing food. We hope to work toward the food from these gardens to be incorporated into… Continue

Dinner in 2020

Remembering the food shortages and the economic plight we suffered, I looked on the curry chicken meal with fresh asparagus and pico de gallo, with a fresh salad complete with tomatoes, onions, radishes, and slivered carrots.

The dressing was a mixture of olive oil, vinegar, freshly-pureed black raspberries and pomegranate flesh. Tossing lightly into the baby spinach greens and the other ingredients, the smells permeated perfectly as the chicken was brought in from the… Continue

Community Rooftop Garden

I recently moved to Toronto and with the move I started working in a new office. About a week after I started at the new office, people jokingly told me to go find the way to get to the roof because they had some kind of patio and garden up there. Well, at the time, we were still in our "breaking in" period, and I had just found out that contrary to what my colleagues had told me...Canadians do NOT like to be called American just because they reside in NORTH America. Anyways, about 2 months… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
