Resilience plan? I doubt it.

I talked about a resilience plan of our city with my some of my friends and colleagues at work and with my family. No one has ever heard about any kind of resilience plan for Braunschweig.

It is difficult to imagine what type of problems Braunschweig needs to face in the future that really need a resilience plan.

In my opinion Braunschweig should improve the infrastructure to face the continous growth. Furthermore they could provide a better food supply for the citizens and also in…

Barefoot

What I particularly like about www.barefootcollege.org is their approach to sustainability. They've been set up since 1972, but I first heard about them a couple of years ago when I was researching solar power in rural communities. The thing that I think makes their approach sustainable is that they train women to become solar engineers, so that when items break (and they will) rather than villagers being left with some broken expensive kit that just… Continue

GECKO: Green Ambassadors in China III

According to the Greennovate Environmental Challenge for Kids Outreach (GECKO), a small contribution is enough to support 5 Chinese girls to participate in the green ambassador program. Below is what I image each of them is doing in ten years.

Student 1: She is at a university in the final year of her Environmental Engineering Ph.D. She hopes to help China renovate its public infrastructure, while keeping mindful of the…

GECKO: Green Ambassadors in China II

Following my discovery of the Greennovate Environmental Challenge for Kids Outreach (GECKO), which educates and trains Chinese youth (mostly girls) to become ambassadors for sustainable living in their communities, I decided to make a contribution to the project. According to the site, a small donation can support 5 students in the program. The project has been around for only a few years, but has already won awards and impacted Chinese kids and their communities. I hope that it continues to… Continue

GECKO: Green Ambassadors in China I

Through WomenWatch, I found an inspirational story about the Greennovate Foundation's GECKO (Greennovate Environmental Challenge for Kids Outreach) program. This initiative educates and trains Chinese youth, many of whom are girls, in schools throughout China. Their programs are offered for free to students and inspire them to become ambassadors to their communities that can inspire others to practice sustainable living. The program… Continue

Learn10 What urgent challenge should EVOKE tackle next?

There are seven continents, hundreds of nations, thousands of cultures of humanity living on our interdependent Earth. One central concept, upheld by the U.N. and other governing bodies, by nations and individuals, is that there are “universal” human rights.…

Smart Growth in 2079

It is the year 2079 and humanity has solved many of its most pressing problems. The world economy has made a huge transition from a focus on constant growth to a recognition that quality of life should be the measure for our wealth. Carbon emissions have been nearly eliminated and the most devastating consequences of climate change have been avoided. Hunger has become a thing of the past as scientists have collaborated with farmers to create safe genetically engineered crops that are grown… Continue

Austin, TX - Resiliency in 2020

my resiliency improvements for Austin, Texas, USA is in 5 parts. most of my plans are based around redundancy and charity. there is also a major focus on the local community; localized centers give people a direct connection to sources that often seem out of touch. all of these will be networked to each other in a fully connected graph.

1) medical care

while there are several hospitals around, they would be insufficient to deal…

Best food is your own food

I am sitting at home with lots of my family. We are eating a good South-African Sunday lunch with the chickens my mother bred her self, lamb my father in law bred himself and all the good vegetables from my own garden. The food is fresh and the different tastes explodes in your mouth. For dessert, my aunt brought preserved peaches (which was grown in her own garden), served with ice-cream bought from the dairy farm close to my parent's home.

To some this sounds almost impossible,…

High speed wireless in Afghanistan—from garbage

Unrelated to current missions, but I thought this would be something cool to share.

This is the ultimate in sustainability. The Jalalabad Fab Lab (nice name, right) has created WiFi broadcasting dishes from junk around Jalalabad. The dishes are around 70dBi @ 1KM, meaning that they're decently powerful.…

IMAGINE2 - Salmon

On March 10, 2020, I’m at home eating dinner with my family. While I’m by no means a chef, I do like to cook. I’m always looking for something new. On this particular day, I’ve finally battled my age old cooking nightmare: fish. By this time, overfishing has nearly destroyed some of the world’s fish populations such as blue fin tuna (…

LEARN-1: Incentives and economic sustainability is key to sustainable social innovations

Economic Sustainability is key to a continous social innovations.

Without it, being dependant on fundings, continous presence of an NGO/INGO to making a difference to a society would be chronic at the level of "investment dilemma" -- the more you are investing your time and funds in that particular community, for particular issue, the more 'addicted' society is to the funds, and the more failure it becomes.…

Final Crash and the Community Trading Post

ten years has seen some major changes in the ideas surrounding money and currency. after what is now called the 'Final Crash' of 2018, people finally decided to end the affair with the stock market and unstable trading/currencies. the currencies of individual countries had fluctuated to the point that they were no longer even usable. companies that relied heavily on stock value collapsed. the 'too big to…

The Ins and Outs of Boston's Resilience Plan

Well. First things first. Boston is not the ideal resilience model, but its slowly working (and sometimes pushed) toward that goal. In terms of minor and major disaster preparedness, the city has a good plan in place. Evacuation routes are clearly marked, and pamphlets inform residents of how to prepare for and respond to in emergencies.

But resilience is about more than being able to respond to a disaster by fleeing. Resilience is about the ability of a…

food security +1

This is a bit of evidence in motion.

My husband and I plan to move within the next month or two to the inner city. Our hope is to plant a garden in our backyard not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of the neighborhood. Starting small, we could provide education on gardening and the essential knowledge of which crop to grow during which season. Our overall goal would be to provide and maintain a community garden where everyone could access and benefit from the food grown… Continue

Going off the money grid

The ultimate sustainable community network create owns barter system. These folks have a group of people who decided to be localvores with a twist. They have worked to create renewable resources and fair trade systems and have gotten very proficient at it. Not only do they support their local economy where they live but have been thinking globally as well. They share knowledge resource bases and train apprentices who can return to their own community or relocate to a community in need of their… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
