Bill McKibben and 350.org have called for an international work day to stop climate change on October 10, 2010. I have proposed to him that there should 350.org should provide an online solutions architecture in order to promote and support those practical demonstrations of climate solutions on October 10 and to make sure they continue after that day.

Setting: The headwaters of the Amazon on the borders of Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil.
A young girl, maybe 8 or 9 years old, paddles a canoe downstream with her grandfather. She sees a harpy eagle overhead.
"Grandpa, whats that?'
Her grandfather replies, "That, my daughter, is the mighty
arpia. It rules the skies and patrols the Madre de Dios river."
Next panel.
Their canoe rounds a bend. They come upon a huge…

Hooray For Dr. John Sadler!!!! And he responded quickly for I sent it last friday late! And yes I am writing him back! I would however, enjoy greatly if any of you have any questions for me to ask I will certainly add them to the list. I can hardly wait to share what we are doing here with them and the rough drawings I have done as a result of their research!
Shannon,
Thanks for your inquiry. If I had a little more idea what Urgent Evoke was about, and what part of the website…

I foresee more ruinous floods to happen in Metro Manila, Philippines. The Philippines also has a bad waste disposal system because trash are not properly segregated - or worse, thrown into rivers, bays, or streets.

It is wonderful to be able to address issues related to access by all peoples to clean drinking water. During my childhood, I would go with my father to each of the waste water treatment plants in his district. These large water purification sites were used to analyze water, then the right amount of treatments are added, filteration takes place to remove large particulates, then aeriation and exposure to light were used to reuse water that came from sewers that brought back the community…

At my house we have a little saying...
"If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down!"
We have come a long way with toilets that flush less water down the toilet, using pressure and air instead of water to handle sanitation conversions into energy for our homes and communities. Many communities are starting to look at biofuels and waste as fuel to create a…

To be honest, she's not really a water hero, she's a human waste hero. Her book is so powerful and informative however that I must make a mention of it here as I think reading this book would benefit anybody concerned (or unconcerned) with helping to fix our world society.
Kudos to Rose George and her book The Big Necessity.

I'm going to start a series of posts that try to address more daily immediate problems. These won't change the world, but will help the innovators on the site release some of our creative juices and getting some more immediate gratification. Here's what I'm talking about....
Mission 1: Create a better system than the plastic bags I have been using for years to pick up my dog's poop,
Background on the problem:
First there are environmental problems with the way most…

Canada waste a lot.
I mean that Canadian do, but that the government in their image for one time seems the least interested in the environmental effectiveness department of thinking.
Prove me wrong but our carbon imprint per citizen on the national scale if not the worst should be close.
Part of the problem seems to be cause by the minimizing aura of our southern neighbor .
We have mostly the same lifestyle as them, save the population density, which literally help us…

In The recession of 2008, skyrocketing food prices brought much of the world to riots, social unrest & even death. Prices have leveled out, but not for long. Our population is still growing, relatively rapidly & with fluctuating temperatures & moisture caused by global warming, our food supply is in danger of yielding gains far beneath what we need to survive.
There are many solutions feasible to tackle this problem. Increased productivity through hybrid plants…

Toronto, Ontario, Canada is a city of over 2.5 million, and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has a population of approximately 6 million.
Toronto's
Toronto Food Policy Council (TFPC) formed in 1991. Toronto was one of the first world cities to sign onto the United Nations' Healthy Cities movement. They cite a lack of leadership federally and provincially, for the creation of this council.…

Is anyone working on using the heat energy from the burning of waste products, garbage, that produces steam, for trubines and electricity, the cooling of the steam collected for distilled water and the heat in the cooling used in a greenhouse for the growing of food in all kinds of weather?

Among the rarefied suburban cultures of the West, the food security problems are fairly h***genous - over-production of mass agricultural artifacts creates vast distortions in the markets for food. Over-zealous capitalism-promoting bodies forced much of the agricultural centres to move to export-focuses industries - and destroyed much of the real food production systems in the process. India was pressed (by foreign debt) to farm massive amounts of cash crops and the land available for millet,…

In the United States it isn't a matter of having enough to eat. Our extremely large brains and abundance of natural resources have led us on a food binge over the last 30 years that may bring back Darwinism in a very dramatic and unprecedented way. So, if we've got so much to eat here and most of us are fattening up for the hibernation that will never come, why do we still have people that go hungry here?
The answer is waste. According to Robin Shreeves of SustainABlog, the…
