I've been really thinking about this week's action part of the mission. Previously, I'd taken for granted the idea of water. I know it's absolutely crucial for life, and that there are major problems with the world not having access to clean water (wherever too many humans are, the water is polluted, by some kind of waste products of either industry or simple overpopulation of us animals). But it wasn't something I was interested in putting much effort into solving. I already am overwhelmed by…

Thanks to the
help of some creative Evoke agents, I finished my recycled hose experimental garden dome/trellis tonight.
It's, well... a lot smaller than I was hoping. It's less than 2 feet tall. And not very strong. So it's not going to be much support for the zucchini or cuc**bers, but it will help protect the seedlings while they are growing. And I can use it as a tomato cage for five tomato…

You may not know it, but in addition to being a philosopher, I'm licensed as a preschool teacher, and I've also worked with kids of all ages in museums, at community events, and as a caretaker. And as crazy wisdom scientist Clifford Stoll (via
A.V.Koshy's video post) points out, if you want to know about the future, ask a teacher, because they see the future every day...
And what I've seen is that the generation…

I've been wanting to build a small
geodesic dome out of some trashpicked leaky hose. Up until today, it was mostly going to be just for fun, so I hadn't been putting much effort into figuring out how to do it, but then when I got invited to help out with a community garden in my neighborhood, I realized that the dome would be a perfect trellis for the climbing plants, while offering a bit of protection from wayward…

Three heads are better than one when it comes to understanding!
I first really thought about the idea of triangulation when watching the Leonard-Cohen-song-filled teen angst movie Pump Up the Volume, where the FCC uses triangulation to locate Christian Slater’s character’s mobile pirate radio station, in a properly geeky version of
Hollywood’s classic chase scene. There were three vans picking up his radio signal that converged upon him, as they drove in the…

In elementary school, I remember a simple lesson we were taught about using the right tool for the right job. You know, using millimeters to measure tiny details of life, like seeds, using centimeters to measure small details of life, like flowers, using meters to measure big things of life, like trees, and using kilometers to measure really big things of life, like how long it is from where we are now to wherever we want to go on this planet.
And in the social innovation tips…

In the year 2020 we've invented a simple, easy to make, water fountain design that also functions as a water filter. Using a variety of different organic and inorganic processes, it takes in greywater and groundwater at the bottom and, through a few stages of filtering and fountaining, moves the ever cleaner water upwards. By the time the water reaches the top bowl of the fountain, the water is pure and clean, and exceptionally delicious! The fountains can be easily powered by solar…

When I was a young adult, there was a wonderful and slightly mysterious place in the middle of the woods on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts, called the New Alchemy Institute. And one of the slightly magical buildings they had on their grounds was a greenhouse unlike any greenhouse you've probably ever been in. It's a greenhouse where dirty water (sewage) goes in one end, and clean water for drinking and anything else, comes out the other end. And…

We are living in a vast universe of almost infinite matter and energy, and so the only thing that's limited us in the past was lack of knowledge about how to
use the overwhelming abundance of resources we have available to us right now in the universe to
get us to where we want to go, physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.…

Consider the ideal of:
Being aware of all that is being offered to you, take only what you need to be your best, and then offer all that you have in excess of what you need to anyone who needs it.How do you think you would be changing as you continued to get closer and closer to that ideal?…

Most of what I do is already powered by renewable and sustainable resources. I even had my computer and lights hooked up to an 80 watt solar panel for a while (but housing problems and marital problems led to my solar panel, my controller, and me all being in different places at the moment, so that's not an option right now, but in the future solar will definitely be my main power source for the couple of electric-powered things I use).
But for this mission, I was able to find one…

Hyperlocavore is a free matchmaking service for garden space and gardeners. And, as far as I'm concerned, it is one of the most brilliant, simple, and powerful
collaborative projects I've ever seen! It will help bring the valuable resources of volunteer gardeners and underused yard spaces together for making local food available to more people.
This is a project…

The Summer Solstice of 2020 is my husband's and my 17th wedding anniversary, and we're spending it hiking up to the top a mountain, to get closer to the sun, of course! We're traveling light, and certainly using mostly traditional, ancient, natural energy, such as our bodies, the sun, fresh wild foods, and the wind to keep us going. At night, we're using solar powered headlamps when necessary, but our eyes are well adjusted to seeing in the darkness, and we rarely ever need to use the lights,…

I'm at the very beginning stages of starting up a project to promote intelligent land use that uses small garden plots of public and private space to provide a healthy living sanctuary for the wh*** community - focusing on the four main elements of a thriving living system:
1. physical needs: food, water, air, warmth, and light
2. emotional needs: a feeling of personal connection with others…

If you are an animal like me, you might have already figured out that your most convenient source of electricity is your own body! Nature is a clever one, as she equips us with precisely what we need to do nearly everything we want to do in life, using our own awesomely powerful muscles and bones.
Humans are electric! Were absolutely full of energy, and when we direct our research to finding more ways to use our own personal energy to do the things we want to do, we'll discover how…

Date: The first day of spring, the spring equinox, 2020
Location: a forest in North America
My husband and I are making our first forest trek ritual of the new year, and it's a wet one! The earth is full of moisture and deep, rich, soil pregnant with buds of new and reawakening life. We spend time a****sing the state of the animals, vegetables, and minerals in the area, and we upload the data to the internet, so that it can be included in global databases for environmental…

Social innovation works best when you start with your own problems. Because, while you may think other people's problems are easier to solve, or that your own problems aren't absolutely important, the truth is if you ignore your own problems, everyone suffers, while being aware of what's going on in your own life that causes you stress and disease mental and/or physical, is the most effective path to
being able to offer others your best… Continue

Having been homeless for about 7 months, and extremely poor for many years beyond that, I know all too well that real, wh***, healthy food isn't always easy to come by, even through food subsidy programs, where empty calorie, fatty, heavily processed food is usually what's on the menu. But I was lucky enough to discover how easy it is to find and grow my own high quality food, even when the most permanent structure I could call my own was a bicycle and bike trailer...
If you take a…

Tonight is my first night of my action mission for week 5, where I get my food from mother nature, eating only wild and foraged food that is either native to the Boston area, or naturalized. (You can read more about this mission by checking out my previous few blog posts, if you want.)
I'm exhausted after a very, very long day of biking and hiking and investigating wild edibles! I officially started my Wild and Free diet at sunset tonight. I didn't actually eat much of anything after…
