A crash course in changing the world.
2011...
The next pandemic flu has reached New Zealand - and I want to the Journalists of New Zealand to come together to put the pieces of information into action.
I feel that if the Journalists of New Zealand had an online link to each other they could help fill in the blanks to what is happening in different places - then each journalist can inform their area of what they know... road routes, emergency hospitals, food supplies etc
I think that an online…

In the past ten years I have been working with the Hamilton City Council as well as the Ministry of Civil Defence to organise meeting points and emergency hospitals in case of an emergency. Most of this has been organised already but not many people are aware of where these places exist - including myself. I have decided to design a map showing the places where I would put these meeting points and emergency hospitals. The meeting points need to be big enough for a large group of people but…

New Zealand's Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management is well known in the community. They have been warning us to be prepared for as long as I can remember in school and on television... Maybe that's why we are so easily able to dismiss their message. They are always telling us to stay prepared so people take it for granted.
This was proven with the Tsunami warnings last year when people blatantly ignored warnings to stay away from beaches. There was no Tsunami but…

In New Zealand natural disasters are something that we are always preparing for. Being located virtually on top of the ring of fire of the Pacific, with the tectonic plates either pulling or pushing, it is like New Zealand is sitting on top of a war zone happening deep beneath the earth's layers. We have one of the best systems in the world to monitor natural disasters but mother nature still has the power to catch us by surprise.
In the…

Today I visited these sites and learnt about the amazing things they are doing to make a difference in the water crisis:
www.ashoka.org (Innovators for the Public) and www.waterforpeople.org (The Current of Change).
By spreading the word of these organisations I hope to encourage interest in these groups and their work. I have decided to follow both visionaries on…

In a previous blog I learnt about Gemma Bulos and her work. She promoted what she was doing through her love of music and singing which I found to be amazingly creative. Have a look at her work here:
But I discovered a clean water project I had not heard of before that I think is very awe-inspiring -…

We have prepared our food and decorations during the daylight in preparation for tonights feast.
The presents we recieve are different generators which will help us power different things we haven't used…

For this task I have decided to try power my mobile phone for one day with kinetic energy. This is only an idea and is definately not a new one but it will be a very difficult task for me as I have no idea where to begin.
I will not post this in my evidence log until I have some kind of result but I'm just making it clear that I am planning on trying to do this task with a lot of help…

This is an amazing idea but the power player who came up with the idea can explain it much better than me --
“With the current focus on global warming, it’s important to note that the second largest man made source of greenhouse gas emissions are landfills.
However, landfill gas is a viable, plentiful and renewable energy source that can be utilized today to reduce our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels while improving the…

I am in a small commune that has developed in our rural area in New Zealand...
I am eating with my family and our neighbours...
The food we are eating comes from our gardens which we all look after - we are all vegetarians and grow plenty of beans and lebtils for our protein...
We take turns preparing meals and share them together, tonight we are having a lentil salad with boiled potatoes - it tastes fresh with…

At my house there are in fact 7 people living on the one property as well as many visitors who come and go. Our food consumption is very large and my Poppa saw this as the perfect opportunity to plant some vege plants. I love to eat this fresh produce and I even think it tastes better than the produce at the supermarket. I have realised that since the garden my Poppa has installed we have increased our food security and that of our friends =)
My mum also works with a group of…

Food security in New Zealand is quite stable... if your parents have enough money.
Food securtiy is defined by the World Health Organisation to be “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”.
New Zealand has that available as long as you can afford it. Most adults are able to earn enough to be able to access sufficient, safe and nutritious food but that doesn't mean the few who cannot…

In 2020 I will be 27 years old and not yet settled down with a family, although I will be considering adoption for the future. I will still be writing as a hobby, hoping one day to become a known author - but until then I'm just doc**enting my dreams and fears.
I am living in New Zealand since returning from years of adventures overseas. I spend my days working so I can save enough money for my study debts and when I have free time I am dreaming and writing. My dreams don't do…
