Imagine3 - torchlight celebration

It is independents day! Yes, our community is celebrating its independence from the grid. It is the first anniversary of our independence and we are celebrating by hosting a neighborhood block party by

torchlight (all lights are being turned out in celebration). This is going to be one fabulous

celebration.

Our neighborhood effort started with three houses. From…

ACT3: USB devise charger - build with stuff I had at home

So I was inspired by this iPod charger posted by TJ Roshan - and I thought 'I can do that with the power connectors I have around the house and in my car.' So here is what I created to charge my iPod (or any USB chargeable divice).

These were components which I had - I simply had not put them together this way. First an Apex hand crank radio /…

Learn3 - PowerPlay - The Scout

I like Freeplay's solutions for humanitarian projects. This radio called the Scout allows the user to wind a crank for 60 seconds and listen for 1-hour. As their website describes this would allow broadcasters to reach those without electricity with educational and informational content.

The radio also has an integrated solar panel that allows for wind-free charging.

Here is a related…

IMAGINE2 - Eat, love, and learn - Freedom 2020

The year is 2020... I am free and I have food security.

In the year 2020 where I get my food, how I prepare it, and who I eat it with has been revolutionized.

Today, due to the local, sustainable food movements (e.g., Happy Heart Farm), and national leaders like Joel Salatin and Michael Pollan I have…

ACT2: Local food security - Fort Collins, Colorado

One thing that I learned is that "food security" is not just about having access to enough food to not go hungry. It is having access to nutritiously dense non-corn based - diverse and healthy food. As I noted in my LEARN2 post - it can be expensive and not practical for lower income families to purchase such healthy foods. Therefore, in an effort to respond to what I see as an urgent local (Fort Collins, CO)… Continue

Local insight - Food Security - Fort Collins, Colorado

My wife and I have just recently started to think actively about the origins of our food. This really started for us after watching the movie “Food, Inc.” I would assume that many involved in this game

have seen it – but if you have not, do! It will get you thinking! Here is the trailer...

FOOD, INC.: Movie… Continue

Imagine - bringing people to the problem - smart mobs

I started in 2002 with a large realization, the world was significantly changing. Digital media was altering the way we communicate and learn and as a professor I began my shift. A transformation from an instructor with the information, after all information was scarce and I owned it, to a networked thinker and learner. Unknowingly, I began to prepare to answer Alchemy’s call.

He called me today - April…

Shadowing William Kamkwamba

I selected entrepreneur William Kamkwamba - I was inspired by his story. At age 14 he build a windmill from scrap metal and parts that he found. Amazingly he did all of this without the use of the Internet and online resources. He learned everything from books that he borrowed from a local library. What is so interesting to me is how he was able to learn about his passion, try it, and succeed.

As you can see he was invited to TED to talk about what he had done. I am now…

How to fail well at starting a fire using a bow-drill set... digital media learning

In this video you can learn how to fail at starting a fire using a bow-drill set. This young man explains on YouTube how he has failed to start a fire using his homemade bow-drill set. What is interesting is how adept he is at using YouTube as a learning tool. He is not only requesting help - but he is owning up to how he has failed!!! And explaining his failure in detail. Good for him. It is by explaining how he has failed that others can then help him learn. Furthermore he suggests some… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
