I've given the idea of "Votes" and "Points" on Evoke some more thought, just because I like the concept of games and using recognition as a reward. I would like to propose a solution to what everyone has been talking about with regards to finding "hidden treasures" and new users. I think there should be a leaderboard based on how many comments and votes people make. If such a leaderboard existed, the people with the most comments and votes given would be the people exposed to the most…

I just found an amazingly useful feature that Evoke has provided to all of us that write blogs here. It's called an RSS feed. What it does is, it broadcasts our blogs to anyone who has this RSS URL bookmarked. Here's how to use it so that you can keep up with people here, or you can send the URL to your friends and family so they can keep up with your blogs (In case you were wondering, our blogs are publicly viewable, as I had my family read them and they had no problem and didn't need to…

This video about how we need to be prepared to be wrong in order to have any chance of being original is HILLARIOUS and enlightening! I guess educators aren't all boring after all…

Moving to from a warm climate, I didn't realize that there is a sense of cold temperature I needed to try to get up to speed on quickly. Moving from the United States to Canada (anywhere really), presented an additional layer of context that I needed to figure out, which was the change from standard (F) to metric (C). So I decided to put a simple guide together for future expats or transplanties.
First some important temperatures and conversions:
Very Hot => 100 F =>…

So I came up with something this morning and wasn't going to post about it, but I see some negativity seeping into the site again and thought I'd share an idea with everyone.
The word Critical Thinking came to mind this morning when I thought about the way I gave feedback to people on this site. This is because one of the first pieces of advice I got when I got to the site was from Nick Heyming in
his… Continue

I'm a big believer that dogs need mental exercise just as much if not more than physical exercise, just like humans. If you think about it, most of us that have white collar jobs are perfect examples of this, or at the very least, that having something mental to preoccupy us will help us compensate for a lack of physical exercise ;)
Ok, so with that said, I have just moved from SUNNY Texas to COLD Ontario....on top of that, I went from having a house and a yard, to being in a 15th…

A few people have been emailing me recently about some of the things I've said and done on Evoke to challenge the members here to "Evoke Anarchy" and generally test the rules of the game and the site. I decided that while my remarks are meant to excite and teach people, that I need to explain why I'm saying to do these things to make sure people, especially younger people, don't take it the wrong way.
First let me say, I grew up in a science household. My father is a Physicist, and my…

I posted this in a comment, but thought it was worth a post because of all the attention the leader board has been getting....
I JUST GOT AN ACHIEVEMENT :)
And now that the leaderboard is down, I feel like I can share this with everyone without them thinking I'm putting them down!
I know the conspiracy people are going to say, yes, that's just what they wanted us to see.....blah blah conspiracy...blah blah...but who cares! (and now that I think about it, with the…

I had an idea today while thinking about my other dog project which you can read about here
http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/daily-problems-challenge1I often think about what my dog is doing while I'm sitting here at work. I imagine her walking around, barking at people in the hall, getting into the trash, and generally just randomly moving about my apartment. This made me think about…

Only click on this if you are reading it from the sidebar....if you see this preview, don't waste your time, this is an experiment.
I just noticed a blog in the sidebar with the title "No Title", which I instinctively clicked on to help the user in case they needed help. This made me wonder how many people do the same sort of thing. Please leave a comment here if you clicked on this thinking I needed help. Just an interesting experiment on who comes by to help :)

* UPDATE AND EXPLANATION OF RESPECTEDOPINOINS.COM*
*********************************************************
I've been getting a lot of questions as to what RespectedOpinions.com is, and so I figured I'd try to clarify a bit here:
The basic idea of RespectedOpinions.com is that News travels Virally
now, and one of the major ways it spreads virally is through social
networks. I have written a blog about this shift in news delivery here:…

Someone just asked me another great question, so I figured I'd again share my answer with everyone in hopes it might help cultivate a sharing culture, and to start any discussions to get concerns about this kind of thing out in the open. Here's a message I received from a friend on Evoke earlier:
these guys have way too muc info on their hands
it makes me wonder about their policy as to what theyre allowed to do
with their data
im talking of security for stuff we…

Someone just asked me this because I replied to them that their request would be against what I was trying to do here, and I thought my answer might be interesting to others as well, so here it is:
In general I'm trying to study this site as a model for the internet. I
have noticed some twists they've done here to make it different than
other social networks. With the blog setup, they have basically given
everyone access to a network of websites to create and asked everyone…

I don't understand the idea behind putting some arbitrary date on when we can submit our Evocations...I'll be honest and say I may not even be on the site any more by then. Not because I'm not still trying to make a difference and do my own thing, but because this site might peter out and lose it's user base.
Evoke, if you want my idea I'll give it to you, but I'll give it to you when I'm ready....If that's not ok, I'm ok with that, I'll just give it to someone else. I do appreciate…

Evoke, a week to make an upgrade in the world of webapps is one thing, but to remove a major feature of the site for a week is crazy! Evoke users, tell me if I'm wrong, but this site is full of some of the most high-energy people I've seen anywhere....you could be losing all kinds of amazing people because they are losing a key way for people to connect to open-minded leaders!
Bring back the leaders tab, even if it's "compromised"!
* UPDATE* Evoke: Could you tell us how the…

This is in reference to my earlier blog:
http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/first-evoke-hack-evoke-apiTo give everyone some background, I've been building WebApps for around 10 years now. I've worked as a developer all the way to a system architect. So when I made my post this morning about how to "Hack Evoke", I felt a little bad, and decided I wanted to make sure something good came…

Hey everyone,
So I have found my first contribution to the Open Evoke API
How to add a message to a Power Vote:
When voting on a blog, go to the frame which contains the powers and right click. Choose view frame source (this might be a tree type of option where you need to select this frame->view source).
1. Do a find in the source code for
power=collaboration
2. Copy everything prior to…

I have had a great time collaborating and learning from everyone on the site, and decided to keep it going when I got to work today. I work in an office with people from a few different countries, so this worked really well for my office. So here's what I did.
1. Everyone drew a map of the state or province they are from
2. We then filled in every city, landmark, fact, etc we could think of about that state or anything we drew in that state.
3. We exchanged maps with someone…

Leaders of Evoke,
I was giving more thought to the way you might be able to use your influence in the game to extend the game, within their rules, in case some people had some ethical problems with my other blog about Evoke Anarchy. If you were to devote a blog a week about another Evoke Agent, and maybe even feature them in part of your Quest (they would be part of your quest if you were trying to help get their messages out) then you would be working within the game to "change" the…
