FGC - Tostan

I chose the story "Ending Harmful Practices through Community-led Social Change in

Senegal"
because the issue of FGM/C has always been a very important one for me. The organisation Tostan is one of many that are working on the elimination of FGM/C in Africa. According to the story Tostan was most effictive on this although FGM/C isn't the main focus of this organisation.… Continue

keeping shovel and spade ready...

Living in a small flat in a big city might not be the best condition to cultivate a garden...That's what I was thinking for a long time. My parents and grandparents have vegetable gardens in their backyards and I always wanted one for myself.

Last summer I was visting a friend of mine and he had cultivated a "mini-garden" on his balcony.

After seeing that it was possible to cultivate your own vegetables even on a balcony I decided back then that I would give it a try myself.

As… Continue

Austria and food insecurity - Do we even now what that means?

Inspired by Mission 2 I did some research on food (in)security in Austria.

As Austria is one of the richest countries in the EU I was quite shure that the number of people suffering from undernourishment might not be very high. The statistics I found proofed this to be quite right.

Regarding to FAO Statistical Yearbook 2007/08 the number of undernourished people in Austria is lower than 5%.

Another interesting fact I found out is that while about 13% of Austria's population… Continue

When Alchemy calls me in 2020 I will still live in my hometown. I'll be working as a social worker or a psychologist working with kids or adolescents coming from troubled families.
I'll be very passionate about my work and committed to it.
I'll still be young at heart and enjoy my life a lot.
As I don't have plans of having a family I'll neither be married nor have kids and will therefore be free to instantly follow Alchemy's call.

I decided to shadow Lara Vogel via her blog "Running to Outpace Poverty" (http://www.socialedge.org/blogs/running-to-outpace-poverty ).

I chose her because she co-founded the NGO "Hope Runs" which works with vulnerable kids and AIDS orphans in Kenya and Tanzania. By using athletics to approach the children they try to teach the kids more than just sports but also the effectiveness of goal-setting, discipline and… Continue

I think that most of all we need to learn about the enviroment/culture/etc we want to innovate, as much as possible. This is the foundation on which all ideas can be established.
As we should be aiming for minimal cost and high accesability it is important to use the already given resources and improve the skills of the people who are affected by the innovation as well, so that they are not only receiver of innovation but participants.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
