Crisis Networking: Covering Risk

Peter Sandman , an expert in risk communication explains why risk truly has two elements - hazard and outrage - and why understanding them both is crucial to crisis communication as well as pandemic journalism.

He said that : Risk = hazard + outrage.

That is, the risk that kills people and the risk that upset people are completely different. If you know a risk is deadly, that tells you almost nothing about whether it is upsetting. If…

Indigenous knowlegde: Local secret

At age 100, the local secret I would like to pass to my community is the secret of the preservation of very rare forest species, for example the Bannerman's Turaco bannermani ( view Bamenda and Traditional Knowledge ). Another local secret would be the secret of maintaining the species of Prunus-africana in the Mount Cameroon forest.

Indigenous secret

The Kilum-Ijim Forest project is a project currently funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF ), UNDP and the British department for international development ( DFID ) through the civil society challenge fund. In the past it has also received funding from the joint funding scheme ( DFID ), the Global environment facility ( GEF ) through the Cameroon biodiversity conservation and management programme and fisheries through the…

Urban Resilience: Resilience strategies

These are the resilience strategies I uncovered to my neighbours:

  1. Planning: Enable the development of vibrant mixed-use communities and higher-density regional centers, that create a sense of place, allow for transportation choices ( other than private automobiles ) and protect regional agricultural, watershed, and wildlife habitats lands.
  2. Mobility: Invest in high-quality pedestrians, bicycle, and public transit infrastructure…

Empowering women

It's April 2020.The statistics of women in leadership position has risen by 20%. In early 2010 , " Principal 2 of the empowerment principles of UNIFEM calls for companies to ensure that there are sufficient numbers of women - 30% or greater - in decision-making and governance at all levels and accross all business areas" says Inés Alberdi, UNIFEM Executive Director. Due to the strategies put in place by the Central American Women Leadership fellowship (CAWL ) program and with the help… Continue

Future of money

It's April 1 , 2020 in the Republic of Cameroon. It's 3 p.m in the University of Buea , Cameroon. I have been awarded a Ph.d in alternative currency. The Cameroon government has embraced my idea of using alternative currency in University of Buea and within the city of Buea. As a result many people would enrol in the University of Buea in the coming academic year since the government (conventional ) currency is higher than the " University of Buea Currency ".…

The future of money :Alternative currency

I tried out "cell phone minutes" as my alternative currency. I recharged my mobile phone with a credit of US$10. I went to a provision store around my locality. I didn't have money to purchase some food items worth US$5. I negotiated with the seller to give me the goods while I transfer him cell phone credit worth US$5 from my cell phone credit. He accepted and the deal was done. This tells me that it is possible for the World Bank to design an alternative currency financial system to… Continue

Future of money: Alternative currency

Alternative currency is generally used in conjunction with conventional money; one may use local currency at the farmers' market and regular greenbacks at the super market. It doesn't try in any way to replace cash, "says Christoph Hensch a Swiss national and former banker living in Christchurch New Zealand. Rather, it offers a way "for people to share and redeem value they have in the community". He says the currencies are most useful in geographical areas or social sectors where…

Water crisis: World Water Day

I would ask the wh*** world to joint all their available resources to provide unpolluted water , highly quantitative and qualitative for life. I would also ask them to maintain a world where no one suffers or dies from a water - or sanitation - related disease.

Water security

Ten things I could do to help a community further their water security efforts:

  • Install low-flow shower heads.
  • Help them check for leaks in their pipes in and around their houses.
  • They could as well turn off their water when brushing their teeth or washing dishes. They should water their lawn or plants only at night. Fill one bucket of water when washing their cars - don't use a hose! Drink tap…

Water crisis

Water.org has the most creative idea for solving water crisis. They inspire people to act ;

Donors - to provide consistent financial resources with a sense of solidarity for those in need of safe water.

Staff and volunteers - to seek innovative and efficient solutions to meeting the global water supply needs of today and tomorrow.

People in need of safe water - to take the lead in meeting their own…

Power shift: World Energy Innovation Day

I am in Cameroon. We are celebrating World Energy Innovation Day.It is powered with the presence of top government officials , and microbial fuel cell ( MFC ) is fueling our festival.

Power shift: Charging my mobile phone

I could use a microbial fuel cell ( MFC ) to convert chemical energy , available in a bio-convertible substrate, directly into electricity. To achieve this, bacteria are used as a catalyst to convert substrate into electrons. Bacteria are very small ( size approximately 1µm ) organisms which can convert a huge variety of organic compounds into carbondioxide , water , and energy. The micro-organisms use the produced energy to grow and to maintain their metabolism. However, by using a MFC I could… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
