Bring on the dinner party

We are at my place; I love having people over to visit. We have some interstate friends staying with us and have invited the neighbours round.
Over the last ten years our vegetable garden has really matured into a nice, productive patch. I've planted exclusively heirloom varieties, as much to assist in their perpetuation as anything else, but it means we have an eclectic variety of fruit and veggies available. Lately there's been a resurgence of independent grocery stores and…

Access to community garden for my grandfather

I've contacted a local community garden to see if there's a place available for my grandfather to join. He used to be an avid and innovative gardener and mourns the loss of that part of his life now that he's in a tiny unit.

If there's a place available, I'll pay for his membership. If not, I'll need to look at establishing another garden. After all, if there's sufficient demand to create a waiting list, there must be sufficient demand to sustain another garden!

Total immersion

I lock up my little art gallery for the night and stroll home, mentally finessing my latest house design. At this time of the evening the heat subsides to a pleasant, blanketing warmth, which I'm hardwired to enjoy. The sky is clear and bright above the darkening land.

I've had a rabbit in the solar cooker all afternoon, stewing with some of the ma**** of tomatoes the garden has produced this year. It smells delicious; I can barely even remember the taste of the beef that used to be a…

Jeremy Heimans, co-founder of GetUp!

I've chosen Jeremy Heimans, a co-founder of Australia's GetUp! online political activism movement. GetUp! came along at a time when I felt despondent about the direction our country was heading and powerless to influence things. It provided the opportunity to engage in a directed, coordinated and highly professional way in influencing our politicians on key topics as they happen, giving me and many thousands of others a voice to influence policy during the course of a political term, not…

Even here, in my cosy corner of the world...

I live in a first world country and have access to an abundance of food. I thought that here, envisaging a potential local food shortage would require a bigger picture (and longer term) context:

  • Climate change spreading the range of crop & livestock diseases, compounding ongoing drought, increasing the occurrence of extreme weather events;
  • Massive migration influx absorbing food resources - again, these could be climate change refugees;
  • Some…

User acceptance is key, but it's two-way

We know it in the world of IT...doesn't matter how good the solution is if the users don't adopt it.

It's tricky though because to innovate you have to be creative...and creativity requires an open mind, radical/crazy ideas; if you eliminate new ideas at the outset in fear of lack of user acceptance then you stifle the creative process and may kill off a really winning innovation. There is also a role for 'educating the market' - commercial companies do this when they have a…

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
