I remember five years ago. The government was experimenting with weapons to control the weather, and they made a mistake. By adding too much hydrogen into an already unstable solution a hidden factory in an uncharted island in the Pacific exploded and created a static thunderstorm. Making the area extremely dangerous, this enormous thunderstorm kept itself alive by evaporating the water of the ocean, absorbing it, and releasing it in an endless cycle. In this disaster thousands of scientists…

In a previous post I talked about how a local architect designed a house running on clean, renewable energy. To use this same example for this mission would seem unfair to me, as it would be double-dipping. Talking about Van Jones would also be a bit superficial. Instead, I'll talk about someone whom would not come to mind when talking about Power Shifts into renewable, sustainable energy: Bill Gates. One of the wealthiest and most influential men in the world, Bill Gates is famous for…

I thought I had already posted a response to this. Anyway...
I live in a fairly affluent community that has no major issue with food. However, the island as a wh*** does have some problems, and the food crisis, given the overall overpopulation of the island (5 million people living in a 100 miles x 35 miles island) will likely have massive effects on the population if left unchecked. The socio-economic and historical considerations of the farmers in the island, whom, because…

I don't think that teaching a single person to grow food is an ideal solution for this "act" mission. For someone in a teaching position (like myself) it is better to, as suggested in one of the tips from one of the first missions, "use what you have", and what I have is a talent for teaching and influencing minds. Instead of going about the traditional "I helped someone" route, I helped my students learn how to help themselves.
Even though I make a relatively acceptable…

To resolutely make a statement on what I will be eating ten years from now would be irresponsible unless taking into account several variables. Therefore, instead of writing one possible future and state is as the one and only possibility, I will write four possible outcomes based on four very different scenarios, all of them relative to where I want to be versus where the world seems to be…

This mission was a fairly simple one to accomplish for myself, as I have been "shadowing" my 'social innovator hero', Dr. James P. Gee, the Mary Lou Fulton Presidential Professor of Literacy Studies in the University of Arizona (formerly the Tashia Morgridge Professor of Reading in the University of Wisconsin) for a few years now. I have always believed and known that videogames are not only excellent tools for teaching and learning, but also have integrated great educational models.…

Ten years from now I visualize myself as a tenured professor in an educational institution that has the word “University” or the words “Community College” as part of its name. I will be teaching mainly courses on Romantic poetry, Victorian literature, and Digital literacies and literatures, but will also teach courses on American literature, 18th century literature, and writing and…

In order to complete the requirements for the “Learn” mission of “Social Innovation” one is required to “own” one of the 33 “secrets” of being a social innovator which can be found in a curious post in the Designing Africa blog (…
