Planting Carlin peas

I have been planting some Carlin peas in the back graden behind our house. I put 250 in, yesterday and today. They are in two rows, 25 cm apart. Each pea is 5 cm from the next and I push them in about 3 cm deep. I have marked the rows with a lot of raspberry canes I pruned out last month. These peas grow up tall so the raspberry canes will be a support for them to grow onto.

I am not sure how these peas will get on in the earth here. It heavy clay. I already have improved it a lot by… Continue

Oil crunch 2012?? Local disaster

If this article in the Guardian is correct, the US military are predicting that global oil reserves will be gone by

2012
. I think this will have a huge impact on our local lives in thedeveloped world. We are hugely dependent on the global transport network for almost every daily need.

What's the situation where you…

Points on mission objectives

Hello fellow agents,

You might be curious about what the points scores are, which are listed on the mission objectives. "This mission is worth + ... [power]". I was, so I asked around a bit.

I'd assumed that they were points scores which would be awarded by the game's admins when we'd submitted our evidence, as long as it was a reasonable attempt.

No - apparently no judging of evidence is taking place at this time. Don't count on getting those points!

"Keep CO2 below 350 ppm, kids"

I ended up in planetary management. It would have seemed strange to me when I was young, to have spent my life thinking on the planetary scale while living mostly at home, grow a lot of food, doing a lot of community events locally.

Maybe it's not strange to you, that's the world we live in now, right? We have to think about the backstory, the drainage basin,… Continue

Acting for food security in Canley

Success in my local area - new fruit trees planted.

Apparently in the UK we import 90% of our fruit, and about 1.5% of all our fruit and veg comes by air so it is not going anywhere at the moment. Bananas are still fine as they come by boat into Southampton and Portsmouth, mostly from the Commonwealth republics in the… Continue

Biogas engineers - trying to find

I'm looking for someone with biogas engineering expertise to tell me whether my idea for intensive worm farming to fix climate change could work.

Biogas generation has very similar problem for example the need to contain greenhouse gases which would be damaging in global warming terms if they escape.

I found online information sheets from the… Continue

Volcanic ash - networking stranded travellers

I discovered there is a Facebook group for stranded travellers, that could be a good start for networking opportunities around the globe. From their fronpage message:

"Hundreds of thousands of us are stranded, thanks to billowing ash from Iceland's Mt. Elslksjlaresssrfzzzt. Let's come together, swap stories, keep our spirits up, and offer advice for coping… Continue

Kenya's farmers losing out from volcanic ash

I mentioned in my previous post the impact on food exporting nations from there being no air travel around Europe. There's a story on the Guardian website indicating that around 10-15 t of freight usually comes to Europe from Kenya each day, and the lack of flights is costing $1.3 M a day.…

Europe's ash cloud - stuff needs done!?

Some ideas that EVOKE folks might care to think about. Maybe your creativity and skills and knowledge can be of great use right now:

1) I think European folks stuck elsewhere and other stuck in Europe need a skill exchange. For example I heard of a teacher and a doctor who are on holiday in Antigua, meant to be home tomorrow but no planes. How could they be put in touch with a local school and clinic that could use their skills?

Has anyone already set up a mechanism to match… Continue

Some leads on local resilience - Coventry, UK

I have two ideas about how to go forward with this mission objective. I thought I would write them up to encourage myself and harvest any ideas from my great readers.

1) Coventry University has courses in Disaster Management and Emergency planning in their Department of Geography, Environment and Disaster Planning. I wonder whether their staff and students have been involved in… Continue

Food security - California, USA

I found this interesting article through the Facebook page for Jeremy Seifert's film "DIVE - living off America's waste". If you haven't come across it, this is a radical film encouraging people to take advantage of little-known legislation to help food retailers donate spare food instead of wasting it. Courage… Continue

How worms can fix the climate

My sketch of how it could work.

I started thinking seriously about the kind of scale of intervention that might allow us to get back to 350 ppm CO2, and I did a calculation in this post following our…

Clean water? Don't poo in it

My favourite innovation is the peepoo bag. I know a lot of other agents have written about this one but I hope I have something to add.

Where I live the most common sanitation device for humans is the water closet. This means people pee and poo into a toilet then flush it with mains water. This probably seems totally crazy to folk who struggle every day of their lives to get… Continue

Handover party at the power plant

We're handing over the power plant to the local group who are going to run it from now on. Great excuse for a party! (I mentioned this project in my LEARN3 and IMAGINE1 posts.) The second month of the year might not seem like the ideal time of year for partying, but we find ways to make merry.

Heat's one thing we're not… Continue

Worms fix the climate?

I started this discussion over on the discussion board - I have a calculation to put together hence bringing it back to my blog. It's demonstrated that worms fix carbon. Do they fix enough to make a serious difference to the "overflow" of the carbon bathtub? Please do check… Continue

WaterAid

I know Radhika Darbari has also chosen WaterAid so please go and check her post as well.

WaterAid are doing amazing things and they have a really sound strategic approach to their interventions. I've been reading about one of their projects in Konso, in southern Ethiopia,… Continue

Bright green - water drop

I'm imagining that I've found something completely safe to colour the water with. In every large city in the world, agents add food colouring the the water supply. Everywhere the water pipes run in that city, the water has turned green. The dye breaks down harmlessly over the course of the day. Paler green, and paler, then it's gone.

Meanwhile, air force aeroplane crews from all nations are collaborating on a secret mission - the green water drop. There are still one or two areas… Continue

Prayer for the day

God of the broken, God of the wanderer, Christ who is without shelter, surround those in deep need among us. Surround them and help us hear their cries for help. We are a people who long for the broken to be mended. We long for justice in the face of much corruption. We want to practice hospitality but have legitimate fears. Surround us in our trying times and help us to reach beyond ourselves. We confess we are bogged down by so much need in the world. May we have the courage to stand for… Continue

Eating with partners and other vendors in Tokyo

I need to get back to our lodgings to catch up with the kids but I'm staying for a bowl of soup before we go. I've been working with the kombu harvesters and they make the best stock so their soup is amazing. They've been trading with the growers in the harbour and the rooftops so the soup is rich with bean tops, radish, shi-itake mushrooms, bamboo shoots and… Continue

Dehumidifier power - pull the handle

We run a dehumidifier every day during winter to take moisture out of the air so we don't encourage mould in the house. I've been thinking about how else that could be powered.

picture from here .

I think it could work if I had a pull cord with a handle at the top of the stairs. As people go down the stairs they could… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Foods are vacc** sealded for easy…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
