One Day Without Shoes, April 8th

Amongst the frenzy that is going on here on EVOKE, I ask you, my fellow EVOKEians to please join me tomorrow, Thursday, April 8th, for one day without shoes. It will be something not only to indirectly bring our community together, but it will also give you the opportunity to make a difference.

One day without shoes is hosted by TOMS shoes. If you don't know about the company already, please read my very first blog post. It was about the founder,… Continue

Politicians- Switchfoot

Everything is broken,

Everything is broken,

Everything is breaking down, breaking down

Everything is bleeding,

Everything is bleeding,

Everything is breaking down, breaking down

I pledge allegiance to a country without borders,

Without Politicians,

Watching for my sky to get torn apart

We are broken, we are bitter, we're the problem,

We're the Politicians,

Watching for our sky to get torn apart

Come… Continue

Water Fast 2020

To bring importance to the water crisis, I would organize a water fast. In fact, this could be during the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is so beneficial to me, and I think that everyone who can should participate in it, regardless of their religious background. This would not only conserve a large amount of water, but it would force people to think about what it is like to live with little water. I think this would bring the idea closer to home and make more people conscious of this problem. If it… Continue

Eid 2020

Dear Diary,

It is 2020, and I am celebrating Eid in a way that I never thought would be possible before. Today, in the new mosque, I noticed that the entire room was lit by natural light. There were huge windows everywhere. This was not the most impressive part though. (I hope this doesn't offend anyone) Everyone was doing wudu without water! Talk about conservation, imagine how much water it will save now that this group of people are doing wudu so unconventionally.

Later… Continue

Self-sustaining Jazz Band

SCAT!

I imagine one day playing my saxophone in a jazz band which creates enough energy to light up an entire auditorium, literally. We would produce the energy (I am not sure about the logistics of this) and we would harness the energy, using it to light up the auditorium. Not only would this energy flow through the lights, but our fans would SEE the energy that they were already feeling. Plus, we'd be bringing jazz back.

Anyone know how to bring this idea to fruition?… Continue

Power-generating Dance Floor

http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/17/power-generating-dance-floor-hits-uk-club/

I'm not one to party or visit clubs, but if I dropped by a club using this dance floor, I might change my mind. The innovators of this Power-generating Dance Floor have hit on something pretty awesome. In fact, it reminds me of the basis of this very website. It is using something that people already spend so much time… Continue

Short and Sweet

All I've got to say is that this meal would be vegan-friendly, locally grown, and home cooked. YUM.

Help?

Would y'all be willing to help me out a bit? If you read my previous blog post, I spoke about my school's cafeteria. I would be really appreciative if you helped me write the letter that I am planning to send to the food services on my campus. Just leave a brief statement here about why you feel that it is so important to be more careful about food usage. Even better, if you have any ideas on how they can improve, please share. I will incorporate these messages into the letter, mention EVOKE,… Continue

Overconsumption

It's almost unfathomable how much overconsumption occurs in the US. I could go on and on about this, but I will just give a little case study ;)

At my school, the cafeteria is overflowing with food. There is never a day that we worry there will be nothing to eat. In fact, our problem is the opposite. There is so much to eat that it often is wasted. I watch trays still filled with food being directed to the garbage. Then what happens to it? Is fed to farm pigs. I am a vegetarian and… Continue

My future

In the year 2020, I hope to be a successful attorney living in Europe.

That's all well and good. But really, I don't know where I will end up career-wise or where I will be living. The most important thing for me is that I will be making a difference everyday. I will be improving myself, and constantly learning so that I can contribute to the progress of our world and the beautiful people living in it.

I also hope to have a companion on this journey whom is just as… Continue

Dehumanization is so Easy

I have chosen the following from Ethan Zuckerman to blog about:

5. Problems are not always obvious from afar (You really have to live for a while in a society where no one has currency larger than a $1 bill

to understand the importance of money via mobile phones.)

I can emphasize how true this is. It is so easy for us to stand thousands of miles away from a problem, donate some money or material and then forget about everything. These people are not just things that we… Continue

TOMS Shoes- Blake Mycoskie

Please Watch This.

My favorite social innovator is Blake Mycoskie, founder and chief shoegiver of TOMS shoes. Blake actually came down to visit my school a couple of weeks ago. I had been hearing quite a bit about him, but I never really knew the full story behind his idea. I heard him speak, and my friend and I were both awe inspired.

The reason I am so stricken by Blake's idea is because it is not only extremely noble, but… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
