Too much water

We have a water problem in our town and the surrounding territory. Our problem is too much water, at least at the moment. Wish we could give some of our "problem" to those parts of the world with the opposite problem of not enough water.

We don't live in a swamp, but there are swampy wetlands all around, separated by rolling hills. We happen to live up on a hill, so there is not much risk of a flood for our house, though others in town closer to the water occasionally experience the… Continue

Global Community Gardening Network - the idea

This mission is a difficult one for many people, myself included. Food is fundamentally essential for life, of course, so you would think we would think about it more. "We" being the part of the world that has arranged that we have plenty of food, we don't have to worry about it too much. So what do we need to do? And what about the rest of the world?…

Bamboo for food

Our area of the world, in the Northeastern corner of America, does not have much in the way of grain production which we need for carbohydrates. I learned about this from Amos Meeks' blog "Food Security in Affluent Communities" (which I learned about from Wintermute's blog "Satisfied but not secure", which I learned about... oh… Continue

2020 Vision, More Sustainable, Less Wasteful

In 2020, I am at home, living in a small town not too close or too far from a large urban metro region. It is good to be close to nature, but also close to people and all that civilization offers.

My house is super insulated, using mostly geothermal energy to heat it in the winter, and cool it in the summer, and to warm water all year long. We are using electricity for the remainder of our power needs. We have solar electric panels on the roof and a small windmill to…

Visualizing World Population

Hans Rosling is my hero, partly because he helped create the Gapminder software, but moreover because of how he uses it to make it clear how the world has been changing, and how it is likely to change in the future.

In particular, everyone needs to be aware that the population explosion is ending - growth has been slowing since 1980, and the population will peak at about 9-10 billion by 2050. Most of the world is rapidly moving towards having 2-child families with average…

How to win by accepting culture as it is

One of the innovation tips I immediately took issue with was "Don’t fight culture". I want to change whatever is not working, so my reaction to reading this was, "What, how can that work?"

But I must admit, it is critically important that we work with culture as it is, mostly because it is very difficult to change culture, even when it doesn't appear to be working to its own best advantage. Culture is what it is because people steeped in the… Continue

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
