EVOKATION: Micro-franchised Makerspaces for the Third World

EVOKATION

There are many, many challenges to be tackled in the developing world today. One of the best ways I see of getting at many of them at once in an effective and large-scale manner is to give people the tools to solve their own problems. This is why my Evokation is to create microfranchised…

ACT6: Empowering Women Social Entrepreneurs

When I went to donate to empowering women on Global Giving, the first thing that struck me was the shear immensity of the number of possible projects to donate to. The list seemed endless, and all of them just as… Continue

LEARN7: Water in Waterfield (aka Winchester)

The town of Winchester has had a lot of trouble with water this year, amusing since our town was originally called Waterfield (The wh*** center of town, including the high school, was basically built on a marsh, or field of water.)

This year, because of high rain, we had two instances of flooding. The first came after 4 or so days of heavy rain. Much of the town was flooded. The school was closed for days, even after the rain and flooding went away because all the drainage caused a lot… Continue

LEARN8: Acceptance of Indigenous Knowledge

Here is an indigenous knowledge case study from the KIVU (Knowledge, Imagery, Vision, and Understanding) Project for Indigenous Knowledge that interested me:

INDIGENOUS WOMEN HEALERS FORMED GROUPS TO PRACTICE TRADITIONAL MEDICINE IN OAXACA (MEXICO)

After bitter struggles with official… Continue

IMAGINE9: A Maker Call-to-arms

In 2011, when a disaster hits my area, I will call makers and designers from around the world to design solutions. At first, this may seem impossible, as how can people across the world design something to be made and implemented rapidly in Massachusetts?

The answer lies in 3-d printing. With a 3-D printer, anyone across the world can make a digital design, send it to someone in Massachusetts with a 3D printer, and they can print it out and use it almost instantly. The engineering and… Continue

LEARN10: College EVOKE

I think that in the next season, EVOKE should work on getting its way into institutions of higher learning.

It would be great for students in college who are actually studying subjects related to international development, from economics, to politics, to engineering. Also, with a college community, where they ahve easy access to other bright and interested students, as well as college resources, such as professors, these students have the ability to do grand things easily.

I… Continue

LEARN 5: Microfinancing.

I think that the future of money lies in Microfinancing. Specifically, Microloans and microsavings.

Here is an article on how the internet, open-source, outsourced factories, and the accessibility of 3d printers is leading to a growth of micro…

World Water Fast 2020

It's world water day in the year 2020. Over the past decade, Water Day, like Earth Day, has really caught on. This year's demonstration is a water fast.

On this day everyone participating will not drink a drop of water or any other liquid from sunup to sundown. Many of those participating will then go on to blog or tell others about their experience, raising awareness about world water day, and about how it feels not to have a constant clean water supply. The fast not only raises… Continue

Two Innovative Clean Water Solutions out of MIT

For my LEARN4, I bring to you two very interesting and very different solutions for creating clean water, both of which come out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and both of which I found completely by accident.

The first is a tiny water desalination chip, It's about the size of a postage stamp, and uses a new approach to purifying water called ion concentration polarization. I'm not going to explain… Continue

Friday Night, 2020

It's friday night in the year 2020. Friday, the start of the weekend, is a special day in some sense of the word, and to celebrate the weekend my friends and I are going to go to a nearby dance club.

Like all dance clubs nowadays, it has a piezoelectric floor. That became pretty standard by 2017. Tonight though, the club is claiming to have a special energy event. They won't say what it is, but they do say they'll be handing out free T-Shirts, which is a good enough…

Farmpunk Kit

Allison Tweedell and I have come up with a design for an off-the-shelf Farmpunk kit. The purpose of this kit would be to create an easy and trendy way for middle class suburban people to create backyard farms and join the farmpunk movement, improving the food security of their household and community. It would consolidate everything they need into one convenient and easy to buy package.
There would be two sizes - a…

LEARN 3: Husk Power Systems

Husk Power Systems is a for-profit (which I read as economically sustainable) company using rice husks, a form of agricultural waste, to power rural India.

You can see their company website Here, and their PopTech presentation Here.

There are several reasons I really like this project:

1. It's economically sustainable. They make a profit by powering rural… Continue

IMAGINE2: 2020 is Really Pretty Okay

It's March 10th, 2020. After my latest Hackerspace in Africa achieved independence last week, I decided to go home and visit my family for a little while.

Right now we're sitting down to dinner, some of my mother's delicious pasta. My mother got into gardening back when there were the worldwide food shortages, and she's kept it up since so some of the vegetables in the sauce are fresh from the garden. Most of the food, however, we got from the supermarket nearby, much like we did 10… Continue

LEARN2: Food Security in Affluent Communities

In the upper-middle class town of Winchester in the second most food secure state in the United States, food security right now is not much of an issue.

However, in the future if we continue as we are concerning food, feeding yourself, even as an affluent citizen of… Continue

NEWSKILL: Juggling

I began juggling a little over four years ago. I began with Contact Juggling, a type of juggling that involves taking one or more balls and rolling them around your body. A great example, and my personal favorite video, is Elements. Another great video is JCJC.

Now that you've been wowed by contact juggling, I hope you want to learn. By the best resource, and the way I… Continue

Taking the Next Step: Maker's Guild--It exists!

This is the official unveiling of the Maker's Guild Wiki!

If you are interested in being a part of the Guild, to the the wiki and follow the application guidelines. I look forward to this network of Makers contributing significantly to the EVOKE Network!

However, this would never have been made were it not for Raymond M. Kristiansen's blog post, "… Continue

Maker's Challenge

This is another idea for the "Challenge the Network" discussion.

This would be a Maker's challenge. The challenge is to make something.

First, you would try to identify some need to want that you are someone else has.

Then you would find something you could make using the resources around you that would address this need or want.

Then you would make it, and blog about it (preferably with pictures!)

It is important to…

There has been some talk lately about EVOKE "Guilds". I like this idea.

Collaborative Challenge

I recently submitted an idea for a player Challenge:

"I like the idea of a collaborative challenge.

I've noticed some people already posting to try to gather groups of people together to work on an Evokation (Here and Here). I think it may be interesting to turn collaboration on an Evokation, or any sort of positive…

Using What You Have

Of the Evoke powers, Resourcefulness is the most meaningful and significant to me. With resourcefulness you can use what you have to create solutions that work, both in function and feasibility. You can turn bicycles, cellphones, and scrap metal into windmills, pumps, pipes, bellows, infrastructure, lights, and so much more.

I blogged about my two favorite examples of this in my ACT1 post, both the…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
