The questions I answer in this post for the 10th learn unit differs from that the missions asks for.
I played EVOKE as part of a course for my university studies. Therefor I wrote a paper in German to summarize my experience.
I hope you are ok when I abstract this here in English
What positive experience did you gain by playing EVOKE?
I always were interested in different social and environmental aspects brought up by EVOKE,
but I really learned a lot…

I chose the secret about "Managing Panic in Pandemic" by Dori Reissman.
Maybe I chose this, because we currently have a kind of
EHEC pandemic here in germany. So it is easy to follow what is the reaction of news media and the population.
Obviously the media capitalize this to get headlines and medical association warns about panic. As Reissman said we inflationary use the word "panic". It isn't really a panic. The…

I chose the
Barefoot College from the
KIVU-List. It is an Non-governmental organization founded in 1972. This school aims to rediscover and use the indigenous knowledge, skills and wisdom to solve the local problems and to make the poor and unschooled people more independent form outside. The idea goes back to Mahatma Gandhi.
Other than traditional…

We are in a more or less comfortable situation here in germany. Germany is more or less safe from bigger earthquakes. Global warming studies do not forcast bigger drouths and germany is politically one of the most stable countries in the world.
But you cannot be sure of being safe for a long term. An example is the 100-year flood at Elbe river in 2002 which destroyed a lot of houses, streets, bridges..
In such a situation Ushahidi could spread informations…

2020 - I periodically invested in "
Empower 300 women entrepreneurs in Africa" and over the years I came in contact with the women in Kenya I invested in.
So I saw how women expand their business. It became more and more robust and they became important employers for women as much as men. On this way those women got influence in politics. Women in general got more independency. Female genital…

For now I chose the project "
Empower 300 women entrepreneurs in Africa " and invested 25$. I start to become a large-scale social investor ;)
I have followed projects like Grameen Bank for a long time. There are reasonable critics and issues with Garmeen Bank, but I think the way of microfinance and engaging womens in general is a very important aspect to realize social improvements in…

When I read the articles at Womanwatch, I paid attention to a
article about womens at Mindanao, Philippines.
Because of an civil war between government and rebels 90 per cent of the people left the island. After truce they came back and need to rebuild their homes and restart farming etc.
The projects of World Food Programme should revitalize the local economy. And they are…

I wrote about
33needs before. It is really an interesting alternative to
Kiva, which is described here in many posts. So I invested in a project at 33needs. This is done by Amazon Payment. Although that is probably not that new kind of payment, I never used online payment like PayPal etc. before.

WASHINGTON - Today the new worldwide currency is presented. Initiated by China, India, EU and USA and organized by UN and World Bank it will be simply called "world monetary unit"(code: WMU). It is divided into 100 cents.
Long standing conflicts about currency devaluation resulted in this decision. All the 177 member states of the United Nations agreed to introduce the currency.
Because the paper money even lost its importance in developing countries, this will be also the…

Paying with your is one of the most interesting development today and will probably be a popular alternative in the future.
Interestingly there is already a wide-used system called
M-Pesa from Safaricom in Kenia since 2007. It is used for everyday payment. People get their salary this way, pay in supermarket, for flight tickets. You are able to exchange money with each other easily. And it works with every mobile phone using…

The main problem is to provide safe and clear water. Most people have only access for contaminated water, that contains microorganisms causing waterbourn diseases.
I want to introduce
Solvatten, which invented a canister to solve this problem. It makes use of filtration, heat pasteurisation and UV-disinfection. Those techniques are not new and there are many other projects that try to solve the problem that way. But Solvatten…

It is summer day in 2020. I am on the way to a birthday party. It is a long way, but it is important for me not to miss this party of my best friend.
I am doing my business on a environmental project in the countryside. Ten minutes after I told my smart device where I want to go a robot hydrogen car stops in front of me.
My device tells me that we have an hour to the next station. So I use the time to call a meeting with partners. The car uncoils an energy efficient…

I ride my bike for almost every way, also when it is dark outside. So it is very important for me to have a robust dynamo. Bottle dynamos have issues especially on rainy days, so I bought a hub dynamo. It is a perfect solution. I have had no issues with my light system since I bought it 1 1/2 year ago.
Those hub dynamos are always generating electricity even in broad day light. So I decided to stop wasting it and bought a…

Many ways to get energy out of the sea are invented. There are
wave power farms and
tidal power generators.
Another way is using there energy when fresh water meets salt water.
One effect is called
reversed electrodialysis. There is a project at…

I started last weekend with some work at my parents garden. I weeded a lot. And we also plant a raspberry bush.
But it is more important to reduce the consumption of resources and land that we need for food for the future. That means to eat less, but more healthy. And it is important to eat less meat, because it needs so many resources.
Well, I am not vegetarian. And I know it will be hard for me to change my behaviour. So I started my personal “Project: Sunday Roast”.…

3-10-2020: My family and I are sitting in our kitchen having a lunch. It is all vegetarian and almost vegan.
When I look at my dish, I try to remember when I ate my last steak. It was a long time ago.
Today I am non vegetarian. But I try to it meat less frequent. But there will be a process over the next years that I go without any meat.
It will be not that hard to chance eating habit. All the people around me will chance their behaviour. I won’t demand on vegetarian…

Compared to what the situation in Zimbabwe is, this is quite different, even quite paradoxical here in Germany.
First of all in Germany more food is available than can be eaten. You can see this in the fact that most people are able to eat meat thrice, even more, a day.
That does not mean that nobody has to fear hunger. There is a big group of unemployed and low-income earner who don’t get by with their money all the month. That means no money for food, too.
There are…

I chose
33needs. This a platform for social entrepreneurs to raise money for their projects.
If you like one of the 33 ideas, you can invest directly. And you can start with spending just $10. Someone needs 5.000$, another one needs 50.000$. And the entrepreneur only gets the money if this target is reached.
And you will get a kind of divident for your invest.
So you do not spend for a charity. You "invest" in a…

In 2020 I will have my own business bringing me in a comfortable position to live like I want, where I want and having time to make the world a little bit more sustainable.
I will have had a great day playing with my kids. Then I spent a nice evening with my family and best friends somewhere in a lodge near the ocean. We eat veggie pizza and pasta, because stock farming with its huge land consumption became a niche market and the new artifical meat won't be already…

I am convinced that helping people needs to have a lasting effect.
Based on innovative technology you provide, it works for a short time. You can do that for a more or less short time and group.
If the people don't understand the technology, they get in a dependency which makes the situtation even worse. So the key is helping them to help themselves. That means to teach them and to involve them in the process of innovation development.
On this way:
- you…
