luciferase bacteria

there are night lights on in friends' rooms. constantly on. a slow, steady, painful trickle of energy leak from each one.

so a buddy and i went down to the lab and cultured everyone a couple plates of luciferase bacteria!

this means they glow in the dark as they metabolize. the bacteria use quorum sensing to activate their little glow enzymes, so when a big enough cluster of them grow emerge... bling!

they aren't that…

portable light

i have actually had this kicking around in my bookmarks for well on a year.
its been exciting to watch this project and the accompanying website and group grow and mature.

http://portablelight.org/

from the website:

More than 2 billion people live without electricity, most in extreme poverty. The Portable Light Project creates new ways to provide renewable power in…

fertilizer and peak crises

lets talk agriculture.

fertilizer.

N-K-P

thats nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus

phosphorus is a rock. that means it comes outta the ground. that means it takes forever to replenish. basically a non renewable resource, like oil.

phosphorus prices have already been spiking in the last few years, and it is estimated that around 2020-2030 (hmm sound familiar?)…

cultural sensitivity

so this wh*** thing got started with this post here. you should check it out. lots of good back and forth going on there.

and i was going to talk about this anyways, but i've been holding off, because, well, its a big button issue....

cultural sensitivity is highly over rated.

so many things we had backwards (dinner2020)

dinner time, march 10, 2020...

time to wash hands! you gotta wash your hands, we've been out in the green house, cleaning the filters, checking the water traps designed to water the food and then move, root like, into the soil where the excess water seeps, slow and deep, to replenish the depleted aquifers. and of course, picking the food. fat, tomatoes, broccoli, tubers, all of they racked up and along the walls, all the way to the arched…

seed bombs!

today is seed bomb day for me :)

seed bombs are little ball of seed and dirt/clay lumped together till they hold shape.

they are the idea tool for the planter on the move, someone planting where they have low access, or someone planting when you don't know when its actually going to rain!

the lump of dirt is like a mini planter that both holds the seeds in place (even if tossed on the ground, like in an abandoned dirt…

gardening workshops NEWSKILL

this works in tandem with a lot of things that i have been discussing with people on this sight. mainly comments i have made and posts people have placed about sustainable gardening practice and gardening in general.

i have been gardening for years now. when i was young, my father was and organic farmer. really an organic farmer. sun, water, dirt and cow manure, that was the only thing you put on plants. as i got older, i tended to move a lot, so i rarely had land to call…

EVOKE data

there is no way to share files here. other then the pic/vid/blog system. thats not very viable.

do you have a data set you want to share? spreadsheets, email lists, software (legal and open source of course) that you want to share with the EVOKE community?

i have set up and offsite area to do just that.

send me your files and i will upload, organize and share them for…

this is actually expanded post built off a reply to this post:

the model i think we should strive for is a non-governmental civil society. the reason that we are so stuck with these 'higher powers' jerking us around is because we have gotten lazy, used to them taking…

emergency shelter design challenge

i follow a lot of blogs. like a lot of information is pouring into my head all the time.

here's a little tidbit that should interest the EVOKE community

Core77's design blog is really keen on sustainable design and the like. this is good, i mean, if it's built to be toxic garbage, well, there's very little a person can do with that.

every month they have a design competition. this months competition was for emergency…

the most important thing

is courage.

real courage, not bravado, or smug certainty.

with real courage you can gain knowledge, make the leap of faith that jumpstarts a movement, and know when its time for you to keep your mouth shut because you are wrong.

everything that we do comes from the strength of our convictions and the courage to do what needs to be done.

and thats what we really need. the courage to face the…

Social Innovation (mission 1 imagine)

you will find me, in the broken places of the world, building new blocks to fill the h***s we knocked out.

to paraphrase Bruce Sterling, the unsustainable is the testbed for the future.

where will i be? where else but in the thick of the mess.
thats where the interesting things happen. innovation and the future happen when people are push, where resources are scare, where the situation is unique.

and where…

Social Innovation (mission 1 act)

As you can see from my last post, i am a big fan of open information networks and open educational systems.

as browsed through the list of social innovators provided, i thought about some that i already shadow.
cory doctorow (craphound.com boingboing.net), electronics rights advocate and chamion of creative commons.
or maybe the mendeley software team (mendeley.com), the group who brought us free software to organize and research scientific peer…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Foods are vacc** sealded for easy…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
