The Greatest Silence: Women in DRC

Some time ago I was a student volunteer with HRW raising awareness of women's rights. And there's this 1 concern that really bothered me whenever I thought of it was the plight of women in DRCongo conflict, whose lives were disregard and silenced. Many died as they were used as weapons of war. Women fall in to victims of kidnaps, rapes, tortures by rebel soldiers and their own army and the…

Modern day Marshall Plan

It's 2020 in West Africa, poverty still prevails. People are still living on less than 2 dollars in parts of the world. The romantic notion of Micro-finance has proved to only work in theory. People remain poor because they have no sustainable income. But if given the right tools, training and job opportunities to earn a living, they can be put to work to improve their lives as well as their families. It's time we shift the priority of aids/loan programs and employment… Continue

Downsides of Microfinancing

  • Microloans are more beneficial to borrowers living above the poverty line than to borrowers living below the poverty line. This is because clients with more income are willing to take the risks, such as investing in new technologies, that will most likely increase income flows. Poor borrowers, on the other hand, tend to take out conservative loans that protect their subsistence, and rarely invest in new technology, fixed capital, or the hiring of labor.…

My Ecological footprints, What's yours?

Some time ago, my Geography teacher was on the lesson of ecological footprints, showed us this website where it quizzes you on your lifestyle and determined how many earths it takes if everyone has the same lifestyle as yours and most of my classmates results are between 10-20 earths!!! Yay for me! 2.82 Earths!! I know my carbon footprints are sky rocketing(since I travel a lot), but compared to my classmates, I must say that I've been putting in effort, but still…

Empowering Women

Just yesterday in Geography class, we were shown a BBC doc**entary from the 1990s on the role of women in developing countries (mostly shown in India) and how maternal mortality rates are affecting families. And the sad thing is, most cases of maternal mortality is preventable. In the doc**enatry it focused on women living in slums, and the roles they take on in their society and culture, which is a story of neglect altogether.

They grow up without education, they marry young, they… Continue

Solar Gadgets!

In my last post, I wondered about solar powered devices and went to google about it as I'm sure what we need should already be invented and Hallelujah! I'm right and in fact more than I could ever thought of, so please allow me to share this interesting piece.

3 things I can't live without: My laptop, my mobile phones and my iPod.

In my last post, I mentioned using body heat to generate electricity. Even though I think it's not possible to power large appliances like a TV set for example, but I'm sure small devices like mobile phones and mp3 will work just fine.Picture you would not have to plug in your cellphone or iPod over night to recharge the battery. Instead you would power and charge a device simply by wearing it close to your body or put it in your pocket. The concept of converting waste heat into… Continue

Conserve fuel and protect the environment by using public transports

I just need to rant about something. I'm sure all of us had came across people who won't stop complaining about the inflation of gas prices and then they do nothing about it while continuing driving 5 blocks away to McDonald's or the grocery stores. Really? Are these people that lazy to even walk? Here we are, with the world facing fuel depletion crisis* and desperate looking for solutions to replace oil and gas and yet the number of cars on the road continue to increase rapidly! These people… Continue

Body heat = Electricity

Thanks to the advancement of technology innovations, scientists have developed a way to tap body heat and using it to generate electricity, using a mechanism to convert heat into electricity. And perhaps in the future, we could be using such technology for our everyday devices and appliances. Even though I don't know how much body heat will take to generate enough electricity for a plasma TV! But I think it will work for small devices like mobile phones, MP3 players or even my PS3 controller… Continue

What caused overpopulation in Africa? (part 1)

As a Geography student focusing on the overpopulation problem in West Africa, It has given me much insight into this issue that could be the root of certain problems being faced in Africa today. I'm going to break things down into simpler terms for easy understanding for everyone. As for this part of the blog, I'm going to talk about what caused overpopulation.

In the 1st 99% of Human History:

-Death rates were very high

-Infant Mortality… Continue

To everyone out there...

It's hard to put my finger on it as there's so many definitions to the word 'Hero'. As a child, the term evoke the idea of a person who has struggled or sacrificed his/her life for nobility or courageous purposes, but I know it's takes more than just that to be a hero. For everyone, it holds different meanings. For me, it means someone who's willing to make a difference in someone else's life, someone who cares enough, someone who stands up to what they believe in, Someone who's determined in… Continue

Grain Shortage in Asia

As an Asian living in Singapore, enveloped by our little security bubble, food shortage never posed a threat to us and sad to say, most of us never even thought about the issue of food shortage around this part of the world. Rice has always been part of Asian staple diet and we're the main consumer of rice and 80% of the world's rice are grown here is Asia, the major exporters are Thailand, Vietnam,India and Pakistan and yet the demand for rice are surpassing the supply due to increase of… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
