A Watery Thanksgiving - 24 March 2020

Harvest festivals are one of my favorite kinds of celebratory events. People share their bounty, but at the same time are reminded of the hard work that goes into the production. Furthermore, just about every culture has some sort of harvest festival. In the US, we have Thanksgiving. At my field site in Mozambique, people celebrate the First Fruits by thanking their ancestors for helping to bring the rains that water the crops, grow the gra**** that fatten the cattle and edible… Continue

Access to Clean Water

My ACT4 is a follow up to my LEARN4, and I think it fits nicely.

The Swiss NGO, SODIS, has made many teaching materials available on their website. Their methods for disinfecting water are quite simple and use materials that are readily available to folks throughout the world.

I will either be working in Tanzania or Ghana this summer. And I know I will be returning to work in… Continue

SODIS and my next research trip

This month's National Geographic issue is all about water. I was so excited to get it in the mail last Friday because I knew there would be something to spark me off for EVOKE. Plus, I just love NatGeo. I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't read hundreds of those little yellow bordered magazines as a kid.

Anyway, I opened up to page following the Visions of Earth section and immediately got inspired by… Continue

Why I Will Continue To EVOKE

Last week’s spate of strange EVOKING by various players combined with an uptick in my workload gave me a chance to step back a little and think about my own EVOKING. Explaining how I found out about EVOKE and why I began playing may help explain why I plan to keep on “playing”.

I just started a new job this January after graduating in December. I work…

Conflict In My EVOKE??

Accusations, attempts to game the system, and name calling have been finding their way into my EVOKE email box via mass mailings. I really thought that my fellow EVOKE agents would be above this sort of thing. In a game designed to bring people together to solve problems I find the idea of petty clique creation repulsive. Don't we have enough factions and cliques in the real world preventing the creation of solid, sustainable solutions to critical problems? The relationships we are building… Continue

Internet Access in Rural Africa

In follow up to my last post on African participation in Evoke, I came across an article on the BBC - Nigerian web first-timers long to be 'part of the world'. In the story, the journalist Komla Dumor travels to rural Nigeria, asks people about the internet, and doc**ents the experience of 2 men as they interact with the WWW for the first time. It is… Continue

Food Security Begins At Home

I've been in avidly reading what my fellow agents have been doing in terms of acting to create food security this past week.

Michelle Kim and her neighbor Amelia Baker are submitting a project description to Pepsi Refresh to fund a community garden project. Read up and then go vote to give this project a real… Continue

Portable Light and Power

The Portable Light Project combines textiles and solar panels to bring renewable light and power to folks in remote locations, the developing world, and even more industrialized places. Basically, small and very flexible solar panels can be sewn onto clothing or other easily stored textiles. This non-profit research group is bringing the panels to different locations to see what people can do with them. They've also worked up a… Continue

2020: A meal in the field

Despite the ongoing droughts in Matutuine District we've been able to maintain a small kitchen garden at the field school. The villagers have also been very lucky. The elephants are staying behind the electric fencing and not too many wild pigs have caused problems. Those that have made trouble ended up in the cook pot.

We like to serve the students at the field school local food to help support the community, and teach them about Mozambican culture. A few of the local residents work… Continue

Our deepest fear.

I just posted this comment to Agent Baird in response to his daily video log asking for inspiring quotes.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be

brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to

be? We were born to make manifest in the glory of God that is within

us. And as we let… Continue

Fighting Hunger at Home

Even before the current Recession, the US had a problem with food insecurity. It isn't something you see on the 6 o'clock news, but it is there on the street, in the backwoods, and in the projects. Nutritious food gets more expensive every year, while wages are not matched to these ever increasing prices - this is one of the big challenges that I see.

Here in Pennsylvania, a huge agricultural state, people go hungry every night. According to PA's… Continue

What happened to the African players?

I've been looking at the leader board the past few days - watching new names climb and other names fall. This is a game, right? The points tell us when people have read our thoughts and seen our videos and pictures. At the same time, this isn't a game. This is a social networking platform in cyberspace. A place where global distances and time zones cease to exist, but people and relationships and the knowledge we share could really matter… Continue

Wildlife Guardians

James Rule posted a wonderful video and associated blog post about the Lion Guardians of Kenya. The program began in 2006 and is run with communities on the Mbirikani ranch, the Living with Lions project and the Maasailand Preservation Trust. In the past 3.5 years, they have saved 50 lions and given employment to young men on the ranch - young men… Continue

Stock Your Mind

My friend, Agent Karanja, in Kenya made a post calling for Africa to arise and pointing out the importance of education. I couldn't agree more. As a teacher, and the daughter of two teachers, I know firsthand just how far an education can take one. Actually, I don't. I'm still trying to find the limits but I don't think there are any.

In response to his… Continue

On Evidence & Agents

As I look through the evidence and posts presented by my colleagues I feel several things.

AWE.

There is so much information out there. So many inspirational people and organizations. So many photos illustrating the ideas we are trying bring to fruition.

As for agents, the optimism, collective wisdom, and skills represented by my peers ought to be enough to solve the problems we will face in the game. But we should build on this momentum and apply our knowledge and… Continue

I did it! I emailed my hero!

So I finally tracked down an email address for my hero Dr. Wangari Maathai. She received a Goldman Prize in 1991 for her work with the Green Belt Movement and through that website I found an email that corresponds to one I found on the Green Belt Movement website. So if I don't hear back in a week, I can try one of her other email addresses.

I'm so happy I don't have to use Facebook.

Belo Horizonte Ends Hunger

From time to time, friends send me links to interesting stories. This one showed up in my mailbox this morning. Belo Horizonte is a city in Brazil that has developed a food security program to end hunger within the city.

In 1993, the newly elected administration made access to food a right of citizens. A city agency, composed of various church and civic groups, formed to design and implement a new food system. Local farmers were connected with city consumers and given prominent places… Continue

Future Collaboration

Greeting Fellow EVOKE Agents!

Building networks seems to be a huge aspect of this game - and not

just because it is totally fun to make new friends with people doing

such interesting things all over the world.

Anyone want to speculate how this might play out later in the game? I foresee some sort of mission requiring us to work together as

a team. So many of us have interesting skills and knowledges. I look

forward to working with you.…

When Alchemy calls in 2020...

When Alchemy calls in 2020 I see myself in one of two places - either teaching and conducting research at a university or doing the same at my field site in southern Mozambique.

Following my geography postdoc, I spent a little time looking for permanent position and finally found one. Because of my an interdisciplinary background in ecology and anthropology, extensive experiences in both teaching and research, and willingness to go wherever I am needed, it didn't take as long as some… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
