Portable Light and Power
The Portable Light Project combines textiles and solar panels to bring renewable light and power to folks in remote locations, the developing world, and even more industrialized places. Basically, small and very flexible solar panels can be sewn onto clothing or other easily stored textiles. 2020: A meal in the field
Despite the ongoing droughts in Matutuine District we've been able to maintain a small kitchen garden at the field school. The villagers have also been very lucky. The elephants are staying behind the electric fencing and not too many wild pigs have caused problems. Those that have made trouble ended up in the cook pot.

Fighting Hunger at Home
Even before the current Recession, the US had a problem with food insecurity. It isn't something you see on the 6 o'clock news, but it is there on the street, in the backwoods, and in the projects. Nutritious food gets more expensive every year, while wages are not matched to these ever increasing prices - this is one of the big challenges that I see.

I did it! I emailed my hero!
So I finally tracked down an email address for my hero Dr. Wangari Maathai. She received a Goldman Prize in 1991 for her work with the Green Belt Movement and through that website I found an email that corresponds to one I found on the Green Belt Movement website. So if I don't hear back in a week, I can try one of her other email addresses.

Fourth of July on the Lake
This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat.
