A crash course in changing the world.
I would gather a crisis reaction team combining the following persons:
- Teachers (especially in rural areas) to inform their students and hand out medical equipment.
- Pharmacy owners to create a robust and efficient medicine supply network
- Facebook employees to spread the news on every single Facebook profile in the relevant country
- TV and Radio station employees to inform the people with helpful information
- Owners of local security services to provide the…

Glen Nowak, Chief of Media Relations with the CDC explains the five main challenges to crisis communication:
1. Most scientists believe that news media articles should have the same standards as scientific journals which is of course unrealistic because in the news media headlines and articles have to be eye-catching and thrilling for to attract the attetion of the potential customer.
2. Education is not the only purpose of news reporting. That means a single article can only be…

I found a very interesting project of the Thai police to train their cadets as "change agents" in order to reduce violence against girls and women, which still nowadays remains a big problem in Thailand. The training includes role of police in justice system, police as change agent, and attitude and behavioral change. The workshop is part of Thailand’s commitment to contribute to the UN Campaign to End Violence against Women.
The idea behind this undertaking is that the Police is the…

...I would remind people of a long lost community spirit. A spirit that got lost because of two factors: the development of the so-called "service culture" and the growing ignorance towards our fellow human beings.
Even though online platforms like Facebook and Twitter nowadays create a feeling of connectedness that everyone can participate in, it is not the way people used to be connected a hundred years ago. It is a superficial and selective way of connectedness. A way that allows…

At the Ghana coast at least three species of marine turtles can be found. All of these are highly endangered as their populations are declining due to hunting, capturing or destruction of their nests. The major threat to the turtle population in Ghana is predation on eggs by domestic animals especially pigs and dogs. Human exploitation also contributes significantly to the decline in their population. Special fishing nets are used for trapping the turtles by fishermen and their nests are…

There is a unique nightclub concept in the netherlands called "Club Watt". The main idea behind it is to let the customers create the energy needed to supply the club with electricity. Every move people are doing on the dancefloor is directly converted into electricity which is used to power the light shows. But this is not the only sustainable aspect of the club: The toilet flush works with rainwater and the cups in which drinks are being served are recyclable and being refilled multiple…

First of all it wasnt always easy to explain to other people what urban resilience actually means. The better it is to talk to people about this theme to grow awareness.
The first thing most people will answer is: "Do you really think that there is a need for all this?" followed by "Who is to pay for these measures?". Both questions originate from people's belief (a perfectly normal, human thought) that their micro- and macroenvironment is stable and static and chances that big changes…

As natural disasters, food shortages or political crises are unlikely in a country like Germany I will pick a nuclear meltdown in a German nuclear power plant, something comparable to F**ushima or Tschernobyl. An overheated reactor that goes off in a blast, spreading high amounts of radiation. First thing that needs to be done in this catastrophic scenario would be inform as many people as possible that live or work within a certain radius around the accident site. This could be achieved via…

I think in the not-too-far future physical money in the way we know it wont exist anymore. Taking into concern that the credit card system like we know it today is not older than 60 years and there are already countries (e.g. the U.S.) were credit cards have successfully replaced money in the form of bills and coins in almost every area of daily life it isnt hard to imagine that, in another 50 years from now, this development has continued to a point were especially in the western world…

This week I used storytelling as an alternative currency. It may sound crazy at first but get this:
On the street an elderly man asked me for a cigarette. Usually I would just hand him one and think to myself "Damn, I lost another cigarette to a beggar." but this time I had a idea. It wasnt even planned, it just came to me in that second so I said "I will give you a cigarette in exchange for a story of yours." He was confused (as expected) at first and asked "What do you mean? What sort…
